W'S DRIFT TO IMPOTENCE
N Y Post ^ | December 6, 2006 | JOHN O'SULLIVAN

Posted on 12/06/2006 2:06:31 PM PST by Sabramerican

JOHN Bolton's resignation as the American ambassador to the United Nations makes it official: The Bush administration is now drifting idly toward a mixture of centrism and impotence.

In less than a month, two of President Bush's stronger and more independent aides - Donald Rumsfeld and Bolton - have been dispatched. Rumsfeld's designated successor, former CIA head Robert Gates, is a leading member of the Beltway's permanent bureaucracy.

The administration seems to be waiting for the Baker-Hamilton commission of old Washington hands to dictate U.S. policy on Iraq. Leaks from the commission suggest it will recommend a gradual U.S. withdrawal camouflaged by negotiations with Iran and Syria over a new Mideast grand bargain.

All of this feeds an exaggerated defeatism in the United States over Iraq.

.....

Rumsfeld's abrupt firing was an act of flagrant disloyalty to a loyal subordinate. The defense secretary had made his share of mistakes - notably, his failure to crush looting immediately after the fall of Baghdad - but he had followed the president's policy faithfully.

.......

We don't know for certain the reasons for Bolton's departure: Either the White House wasn't prepared to fight for him, or he was no longer prepared to lend his voice to the diplomatic charade over Iran and North Korea. Either way, his departure demonstrates timidity on the administration's part. The net result will be that Bush has one less loyal subordinate in the shrinking ranks of his own administration.

The reason the ghouls are about to take over is in very large part due to the ones I am engaged with on this thread. You are free to give them a pass but I will not. The conservative movement needs and enema and it has to start with the "true conservatives" that have never met a republican president that was good enough for them. This site is infested with John Birch Society nutcases and are now feeling bold enough to lay it all out.

Maybe if Bolton had agree to announce to the world that we are losing in Iraq, he could have been confirmed?

Maybe they are just assuming that our nation is so large and our enemies so unable to harm us that they feel free to act in ways that must embolden our enemies greatly. That is a common hubris, and those populating this particular panel have been amongst the powerful most of their adult years -- and so hubris might well be a fault.

They must have known how the media and the left would magnify it...for their hatred of Bush over 2000 will burn white-hot forever. And yet those on the panel who should have stood on some ground, any ground at all, that would preserve America's right to defend herself by aggressive forward action bailed out as completely as those who don't believe in the use of force as policy.

Some still think that their internal political "enemies" are more important to defeat than their external enemies - the hubris of a great power that thinks itself unassailable. No one pays attention to the "Barbarians" outside the provinces, instead concentrating on taking the best possible political position for tomorrow's New York Times.

The left doesn't believe in the use of force (or even the maintenance of a robust defense) and now the rest have joined them by not believing - or not thinking it important enough - that our enemies can do great harm to us. No one's left watching the gates. Indeed, what are they thinking?

Which is telling; perhaps I'm wrong, but I think Bolton was doing a fine job.

And what does that have to do with the price of tea in china?
A democrat controlled Senate was never going to confirm him, no matter what kind of a fine job he was doing.
And yes I agree he was doing a great job.

LOL...the "great and the good" have had too many staff for too many years to their work for them. It's nice to make a living without really ever having to think for yourself. Maybe that's what we're seeing the result of here!

Well they do when their version of law and order is threatened.

Where do you Bushbots organize your feeble campaigns to defend an indefensible non-entity??

Bush blew it. He ran one of the worst administrations in history. He has made it very difficult for the Republicans to recover and he'll roll over like puppy for nutjob Pelosi and her pack of Bolsheviks - just like his father did before him.

He's as Texas as Boston Clam Chowder

Why would any conservative run for office? His base would desert him in a blink of an eye the minute the MSM tells them to, and he knows it, why bother?

He could stumble, burp, or misspeak on the campaign trail, or maybe he could have a differing opinion on this or that, he could have an old friend in college who hired an illegal to build a garage, his hair could be mussed one day, or he may like the color orange or something.

If he is not a robot, and a human being, he will be thrown overboard the minute the MSM gives him some baggage.

God help us.
