Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County
Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.
Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
The children are dead because NO ONE BOTHERED TO DEFEND THEM FROM SOMEONE WHO INTENDED TO MURDER THEM!!!
If the adults [or, God forbid, the children themselves] had been armed, then NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED!!!
Why do you think the Muslims, the PRC, the North Koreans, the Russkies, and every-dad-gummed-else-body who wants to wipe the USofA off the face of the earth hasn't [yet] succeeded?
BECAUSE WE HAVE THE ARMS TO DEFEND OURSELVES, AND WE ARE READY AND WILLING TO DEPLOY THOSE ARMS!!!
The Amish abide by the laws of the Commonwealth and are protected by the police of this state like any other resident.
Reminder FYI

There is nothing humorous here. Children have died. Tacky behavior on this thread will be noticed by the moderators. YOU DON'T WANT THAT!

No personal infighting on this thread. Respect the children.

We are trying to keep the focus on the children out of respect and are pulling any subject which could result in a hot sidebar, including homeschool debates and certain theories known to cause lengthy debate.

Do not get into sidebar debates about homeschooling and conspirary theories. Save it for elsewhere. This thread is for the children.
We're in complete agreement. I am very familiar with the notion the Amish embrace a non-violence viewpoint. The concept of more people in general carrying firearms applies to the decent segment of the population who choose to carry if they wish. If a non-Amish person who carried a firearm happened to be making a delivery to the school at that time, he or she could have been in a position to avert tragedy. We clearly will never know.

Just saw the gunmen was only 32. So most likely if he was accused and found guilty of molestation ( which is possible for a 12 year old) he would have only gone to juvenille detention for a short time) So my speculation about jail time was indeed way off.
I think your thinking is defective.
Nothing will stop a determined lunatic who wants to kill himself and innocent people except an armed cop in every school - and even that is no assurnace. He could just as easily have rented an SUV, waited at a bus stop, and then plowed into a crowd of kids.
He could have strapped a bomb to himself a la Hezbollah or Hamas and blown himself and the school up and everybody in it.
The issue isn't someone's wish to keep "their damn guns".
The issue here is an obviously grieved individual (you) and your inability to connect the dots.
The right to keep and bear arms is a Constitutional one, and one grounded in long-time American traditions for good reasons. Read the Declaration of Independence, the part about the right of a people to alter or abolish a tyrannical government.
Removing guns from the public will not assure the prevention of incidents like this one, but it most certainly will put one more nail in the already half-constructed coffin of American freedom.
As far as I'm concerned, there is no distinguishing characteristics between a RINO and a Democrat and I doubt very much if this incident was responsible for formulating your already flawed views on the Second Amendment, a free people, and right to keep and bear arms.
Liberals like defconw probably didn't say "because of your obsession with box cutters" that 9/11 happened.
If there had been one (1) five shot revolver with the pilot on every plane, 9/11 would have turned up to be a near non-event, and just another incident of stupid, failed, violent, muslims acts.
Ditto for Columbine.
I was wondering about that myself. It is almost as if they are Canadian. I do hope this gets the Amish to think about self defense though. It is a shame they can't just live in the world and be happy that goes for all of us. But, there are evil people in the world and sometimes you must defend yourself against them.
Please see the post just above this one. FReepers recognize that the Amish themselves wouldn't necessarily carry firearms, but that an "English" visitor could have been in a position to lend valuable assistance.

~SIGH~ Another willing victim of the public schools. As others have said, gun control's not about the guns....it's about control. You're not a RINO for being ignorant. Lots of good conservatives also believe as you do. Not their fault. They, like you...are sheep. Don't wear the horn....just say Baaaaaaaa and that's okay. You are what you are. I'm a sheepdog and I ONLY HANG WITH SHEEPDOGS. We Sheepdogs live to protect you sheep and confront the wolves of society. The ones who won't be stopped until somebody gets in their path and physically stops them. Like Joe Brower. He and I and all the other sheepdogs of society (everyone with a CCW permit--who's serious about it) will face any danger, armed or not to protect the sheep (you).
defconw I'm not going to lash back at you for your ignorance. The killings in PA were not avoidable. You cannot legislate against insanity. The Amish are a closed society. They are peaceful and refuse to take "security measures." I'll bet their schools are classified as "private." If a gun hadn't been present then the human mind will devise another method. Like say...an airplane? Sound familiar? But what if the teachers or Principal in the other shootings this past week had been discreetly armed and well skilled in the use of said defensive sidearm? Read the essay and try to understand.....
SH, from you posts I know you are in the area, are the other schools (public, private) open today? How is the Lancaster community coping?
RINOs are subversives in our midst - worst than Democrats - at least you know they are the enemy.
I heard today that seven have died. Dear God. The spirit of death in this country is horrendous. We need to pray for our kids.
Joe, You are absolutely correct. The press needs to police itself.
Unfortunately we live in a place where the press has some freedom too.
To prevent (or reduce the number of) these occurances, we need to let the perp know while he's still alive that there will be consequences even after he wacks himself.
Right now as we type there are a number of these sickos just waiting to pull a trigger because of the energy surrounding yesterday's event....the pressure....the World wanting to stop him from doing what he convinced himself that he MUST do many years ago....a critical mass of people are building up to stop him. They KNOW about him. He views them as evil people wanting to put leg irons on him and stop him. This is not an option. He must act but needs to act quickly.
This kind of sicko is very different than the Perp that would off is own children then himself.
Who knows. I would say that the deranged, criminal mind is very freaky.
The jackels nationwide will be using this as a call to ban firearms.
Further, and most unfortunately, the massive coverage given to lunatics like this one and the one who generated it in Colordao, will encourage future half-wits to go out and try to recreate a simialr scenario.
The shooter committed suicide. His body is in custody perhaps.
Good post. Also:
A RINO is a
Liberal who wants to be a
Democrat who doesnt want to be called a liberal, but a
Progressive, who is really at heart, a
Socialist, who believes in
Marxism/Leninism, who is really a
Trotskist, however may or may not own a gun that the
Communist have complete control over.
Bottom Line: Anything LEFT OF CENTER is a COMMUNIST!

I agree about more people in general carrying fire arms. In fact I think that all mentally stable, females without criminal records should be issued a gun, given training how to use it and told " only draw it if you plan to shoot, only shoot if you plan to kill". We have not only a right but a duty to defend ourselves and our loved ones. Indeed I would argue that the duty to defend others extends to those unable to defend themselves.
Often we are at a loss on what to do when confronted with evil in this world. In many cases a well placed bullet gives a very satisfactory answer to that question.
Good post, spot on.
