The Internal Revenue Code:Unequal Treatment Between Large and Small Firms
U.S. Small Business Administration ^ | 2001 | Dan R. Mastromarco and David Burton

Posted on 09/15/2006 1:53:44 PM PDT by pigdog

We are grateful for the opportunity to expose some of the inequities in the U.S. tax laws. When we began this project, we thought we would highlight a few, mostly wellknown inequities, such as the seemingly interminable inequity between the deductibility of health insurance premiums for the self-employed versus C Corporations. Unfortunately, our investigation uncovered much more. What we found were dozens of sections of the Internal Revenue Code which, on their face, disadvantage small firms. There is little doubt that this is just the surface of the problem.

The root causes of these disparities are several.

The main inequality is that smaller businesses don't have enough spare cash to buy politicians and get them to write special provisions for them. Also large companies love onerous regulatory agencies because it creates barriers to entry that make it hard for small guys to compete. Most licensing schemes fall into this category.

By and large, that's why larger businesses tend to be more democrat and pro-big-government and small business owners are the singly most Republican demographic there is.

"Also large companies love onerous regulatory agencies because it creates barriers to entry that make it hard for small guys to compete..."

And the liberals love the regulations because they feel good about doing something stupid.

While most Americans hope to be refunded a share of the money they pay in taxes throughout the year, Amtrak got a $2.1 billion “income tax refund” from the IRS in 1997 even though Amtrak has never paid income taxes.

One more of the many unknowns in the present system hidden among the thousands of pages of laws and rules.

Amtrak should be privatized, the government does not belong in the railrod business.

Actually, government doesn't "belong" in ANY business.

It depends on what definition you use-- the government needs to be in the national defense "business", and they are Constitutionally chartered to operate the post office "business", and they are chartered to be in the printing and minting "business". And then there are the infrastructure businesses, like establishing roads, courts, law enforcement, etc.

We should not be in the retirement pension business, or the health insurance business, or the sports business (arenas/ballparks).

I wouldn't be surprised if we were in agreement on this issue, at least most of it. I think government is way too large.

I agree on defense - it's constitutional. Many of the other things are questionable.

And we do agree that government is FAR too big.

They shouldn't be in the "income tax business" either - and we'll fix that before too long. That will help lead to "ensmalling" the government overall.

It's no "dream" at all. It'll happen. There's really little choice.

A Taxreform ping for you all.

If anyone would like to be added to this ping list let me know.

John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all federal income, SS/Medicare payroll, and gift/estate taxes outright replacing them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.

H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.
