Mel Gibson's statement on his DUI arrest
GrandForksHerald.com ^ | 7/29/06

Posted on 07/29/2006 1:51:47 PM PDT by LdSentinal

The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.

"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.

"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

and I know you know that

Well, I find it quizzical that you know what I know...LOL.

Yes, the damage is done for many such as yourself. However, others will discern the apology as genuine and forgive.

You seem to be making excuses for Gibson.

"We all do it, so just leave him alone."

Sorry. No can do. He's a public figure who insulted an entire group of people. He's going to have to do better than a generic apology.

He is obviously a Jew-hater and so anything he says or does will be insincere.

You are right. He's obviously got a lot of hate in his heart toward the Jewish people and that's not something you get rid of in a night.

Not at all. If he was to go on and engage in this behavior I would be the first to criticize him. Indeed, I am of course critical of the awful things he said about Jews, women, and police.

I can't know for certain, of course. But IMO his statement was the right one for someone to make who is, in fact, truly repentant.

Well I hope he does apologize explicitly and fully. I hope he repents in his heart, examines the world's problems in a more rigorous and mature way, and rejoins the good fight represented by his artistic body of work.

I sincerely am rooting for him to defeat his own ignorance. On the east coast here, night all--

I know this is beating a dead horse...but I just need to say that an apology doesn't take back the fact that he's a Jew Hater.

Yes, for people such as yourself he will be perceived that way.

Hi Hildy. I just watched Passion of the Christ. Mel needs to view his own movie which is probably the best film I've ever seen. It's just so sad really.

When this episode happened with Mel, I immediately thought of Pat Buchanan. He's got the same hatred in him. I agree, it is upsetting. I have enjoyed Mel Gibson's work. He seems like an intelligent guy but from some of his interviews he doesn't come across as a clear thinker.

It's sad on so many levels...for him, his career, his credibility ... and Jew Haters around the world have found themselves a new hero.

Well the Pat Buchanan contingent now love him I'm sure. Most people get a little wine in them and the truth of what's in their hears comes flying out. Now I think Hutton Gibson should be ASHAMED of himself because children don't learn this stuff on their own. Sad.

:) Thank you. If you need to get one over the internet, I have the perfect place! When someone suggested putting an Israeli flag up, I half jokingly said, "WHERE ON EARTH WILL IF FIND AN ISRAELI FLAG IN BULLHEAD CITY, AZ!!!" So I keyworked Israeli flag and the first hit that came up was a place called THE FLAGMAN and he had the flag. I went to get the phone number, and it turned out his store was in BULLHEAD CITY, two miles from where I live!!!!!! I went down there...turned out he went to school with my husband in San Diego...isn't that weird????

I agree about Hutton Gibson--he has planted the demon seed of antisemitism and maybe even the alcoholism. That being said, Mel is old enough that he doesn't have to continue letting that plant flourish. Mel's not dead, so there certainly is hope that he can overcome the prejudice and alcoholism, but he's got a lot of work to do. I think it gets harder the older you get.

And, he could have killed somebody.

I think the antisemitic remarks are going to overshadow the driving while drunk. He's darn lucky he didn't kill someone. He's a father of 7 I believe. You would think the man would have more sense than that--for the sake of his own kids and the sake of other people's children.
