So, tell us, what was McClellan's brilliant plan that would have ended the war in a couple of months? His best idea was the Penninsula Campaign, and we can all see how his dithering and timidity blew that very real opportunity. The "bring the south to her knees" line is usually attributed to Sherman. What's the source for Lincoln saying it? Or are you going to go off on one of your "I'm not responsible for backing up my assertions" tizzies?

Considering that the normal position of the racist, slave-owning, ignorant and backward South was face down in the mud, Lincoln was pretty generous to want to lift the South up to her knees.

I want to clarify one thing about by statement of the South being content to live inert in the mud of a hog pen. I'm not talking of the Southern people who didn't bow the knee to the Confederate slave power, nor the South of the oppressed slaves nor even the South of the misled and misused Confederate rank and file. I'm talking about the degenerate slave-holding mentality that ran the Confederate show for their own private benefit.

Even Lee recognized the degrading nature of the institution.

Too bad Reconstruction did not permanently break the power of the Southern "elite". Almost everyone would have been better off.
