Yankee clauses dashed [Local landowner REALLY didn't like yankees...]
The Island Packet ^ | 07/06/2006 | JIM FABER

It appears that the Northern invasion of the South is complete -- at least it is on a patch of land known as Delta Plantation in Jasper County.

There, a diehard rebel named Henry E. Ingram Jr. made his last stand against the onslaught of Yankees, only to be thwarted by a man from Long Island, N.Y., and now -- gasp -- a French Canadian.

Ingram promised to keep Yankees out of Delta Plantation in Jasper County when he bought 1,700 acres there in 1998. His resolve to keep them out still is strong, but the covenants he put on the land don't seem to have any teeth.

Those covenants did, however, scare Canadian-raised Bluffton resident Louise Legare a bit as she was close to signing a contract to buy a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on the land from Bluffton Home Builders.

The list of rules she got from the builders was missing the first pages, so she went to the Jasper County Courthouse to get the missing ones. There, she found the covenants, or rules, that Ingram demanded of buyers:

1. They could not be Yankees.

2. They could not have the last name Sherman (an obvious reference to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman).

3. And the land could not be sold or leased to those whose last names could be rearranged to spell Sherman.

Clearly, Ingram doesn't like Northern folk.

Now, however, Legare and Bluffton Home Builders are working with Ingram's son, Ashley Ingram, to remove the covenants. The former Delta Plantation is on both sides of U.S. 17, just north of the Georgia state line.

"When (Legare) brought it to us, we all kind of had a good laugh," said Jim Hobbs, a partner in the home-building firm.

In fact, Legare is buying the land and home from Bill Cook, another partner in the company, who happens to be a native of Long Island, N.Y. No one at Bluffton Home Builders had seen the covenants before Legare found the missing pages, and no one has ever tried to enforce them, Hobbs said.

If Henry Ingram had his way, he still would keep Yankees off of the 1,700 acres he once owned. His holdings on the plantation have dwindled to 10 acres.

Ingram, now a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, said his son and attorney, who are both local, should be looking out for his anti-northerner wishes now.

"Yankees destroy everything they have up North, then they come down here," Ingram said. "When they destroy everything (in the South), where are they going to move next? Another country?"

Legare, who grew up north of Montreal, figures her far-northern upbringing must be especially abhorrent to Ingram.

"I must be more of a Yankee," she said. "I'm the person he really doesn't want to live there."

Amazingly, Legare is a much better choice to own Southern land than a New Yorker, according to Ingram.

"French people are much better and more desirable than a Yankee," said Ingram, who once owned video-poker casinos in Jasper County. "They don't stick their noses in other people's business."

The same feature drew Legare and Ingram to the land -- nature. Ingram said he's seen Carolina panthers, bald eagles and fox squirrels on the land. It is that quiet beauty Legare is after.

"I was raised in a very nature-like environment," Legare said. "I think the nature is beautiful in South Carolina."

Ingram, who says he is leaving Texas for Costa Rica soon, cites the boorish manners of Yankees as one of his prime dislikes for them.

"They look down their little pointy noses at the people in the South because we are polite and nice to them," Ingram said. "They think people who are polite and nice are dumb."

To them, he'll be a Yankee. There's some irony in there, somewhere. :)

When my sister moved to Tennessee from Chicago, her 21 year-old son helped her move. He headed into town to get some things at the hardware store. When the clerk heard him speak she said,

"You aint from around here are you? Where y'all from?"

He replied "Chicago"

"Chicago!!" she shrieked, "Oh Mr., don't you think folks from up north are just the rudest most miserable people in the whole country?"

He looked at her and paused for a few moments to let her obnoxious comment sink in and said,

"I used to ma'am, I used to"

There is one question that bothers me, though. Folks down this way will often ask, only after they've got to know you, what church you go to. I am a Catholic, and I hate to be asked this, 'cause there are some folks who consider my religion to be akin to the Great Beelzebub himself.

If they are asking you what church you go to they are just godly folks wondering if you are too.

The best way to answer if you do not wish to say you are Catholic is to just say "I go to St. Whatever over on So-and-so street, where do you go?" When they tell you where they attend church you say "how nice" and that should be the end of the subject.

If they persist and ask what type of church you attend, say proudly that it is Catholic and then go into a long spiel about whatever program or activity you have at the church that you are enthusiastic about. At the end of your spiel they will say "how nice" and that should be the end. But should they ask more about your church they are sincerely interested or curious about it.

actually, he may be one of "your team", as you have any number of SCALAWAGS (the lowest form of southern life) on your team.

i DO despise DAMNyankees, i.e. the 10-15% of loudmouthed, arrogant, ignorant south-HATING, BIGOTS from the north. keep THOSE creeps at home, please. we have enough "trash" in dixie already.

the correct spelling is QUANTRELL (from the family Bible. one presumes that the family KNEW how they spelled their own surname). and NO he wasn't a terrorist.

COL Quantrell responded to the KS FILTH/SCUM in the best way he could given the FACT that neither the KS state government OR the US government was willing to ENFORCE the LAW against the REDLEGS & JAYHAWKERS! (both of those groups were the SCUM of the earth, imVho! AND they PREYED ON innocents from ALL sides. it was WAR for FUN & PROFIT!)

My hometown is Pensacola, Fla. My family goes back in that town to 1783. The biggest problem we had down there was the Yankee retirees (obvious in their shorts, black socks and sandals) telling us about how they didn't like the way we did things there and how much better they did things up North. It got so bad that by the time I was in college the most popular bumper sticker among our set was "If you don't like the way we do things down here, go home."

Just an observation. Threads that have North vs South content usually have a long list of comments. I always read them all and the tone rarely varies. In general, from both geographic areas, the gist is "you dont like us, we dont like you". Not important perhaps but to me, interesting.

Thanks, that is true, and in fact the way I handle it. While I say the question bothers me, it's more because of the feelings that some folks have or used to have about my Church. I know most are just good curious people. My wife's Dad is a Baptist minister and he's alright with my religion and accepts it as part of Christ's Church, but some of her more strident and older relatives think Catholics are less than fully Christian.

I will state though, I've never been asked this question by strangers or minor acquaintances. Just folks that have known me after a while.

Southerners (bless your hearts), please stop asking 'where you from?' when you meet people. It's rude and shouldn't really matter.

Asking someone where they are from isn't rude, it's conversation.

Apparently not. On his headstone the family spelled it "Quantrill". It's spelled "Quantrill" on the marker in his birthplace of Dover, Ohio as well where his skull is buried.

and NO he wasn't a terrorist.

How about "psychotic butcher"? Would psychotic butcher describe him better?

I am sure you know it already but for those who don't...It's useless debating Watie. He lives in his own bitter world where every evil perpetrated during the War Between The States was solely the fault of the "damn yankees".

It's usually a waste of time and energy trying to reason with him but his rants are curiously entertaining sometimes.

In a few minutes he'll be back to explain why the entire world is wrong for beliving that there is an 'i' in Quantrill. And how the entire world is wrong for believing that Quantrill was born in Dover, Ohio and not New York City as he insists. Then he'll go on about how every man and boy in Lawrences was a known war criminal. Finally he'll finish with his story about his relative, Sitting Bull Watie or whatever, who fought with Quantrill in the 4th Missouri Partisan Rangers, or some other outfit that nobody in the world other than he has ever heard about. The man is nothing if not predicable.

In many cases people are asking you what church you go to so that, if you say you're looking for a church or don't go to one, they can invite you to theirs. Many good people love their church and want to share it.
