This cracks me up.. It's totally true. I remember a few years back, I think Chicago was hosting the World Cup or something....
The media was trying promote it...but it ended up being you know the three hour match 0 to 0 tie...
They need to change the rules. Cut the field in half and get rid of half the number of players allowed. Get rid of the stupid @ss off sides rule....(also in hockey)...that would open things up...
Get rid of the goalies too I say. Let the teams defend the goal as the game sees fit. You don't see someone guarding the basketball hoop 24/7.
They do need to change the rules. There's not enough scoring in soccer. It seems like they decided on the size of the goal back when goalies were not as fast and athletic as they are today. The soccer authorities need to make the goal about eight feet wider and one foot taller. They could move the penalty kick back ten yars so the penalty kick isn't too easy to make. With a bigger goal, then you'd have more games with a 7-5 score that would be a lot more interesting to watch.
I never understood the gay @$$ offside penalty. What is wrong with a striker gaining a good position to score a goal. The other night, I watched a World Cup game to help me sleep before I went to bed, I kept seeing the refs blow a whistle with the offsides penalty.
Exactly!
Plus I've hated soccer since grade, middle and high school when we had to play it in gym class.
Kickball though--now that was a fun game.
I wonder if kids are still allowed to play kickball in school or is outlawed for fear of a Nancy Boy getting hit with the ball too hard.
Removing or changing the offsides penalty would open up the scoring. There'd be more of a man to man defense than a zone one.
I also like the idea about widening the goals, but I don't think you need to do both.
They tried that with professional indoor soccer, and it flopped.
IMHO, America does not have room for another major team sport. Baseball, football, basketball and to a lesser extent hockey have the entire calender booked.
I played soccer when I was young and enjoyed it. But I really do not have much desire to watch others play.
