Why Americans Don't Like Soccer
American Thinker ^ | 6/25/06 | Steven M. Warshawsky

Posted on 06/25/2006 2:30:42 PM PDT by RepublicanPatriot

My theory is that Americans have neither the belief system nor the temperment for such a sisyphean sport as soccer. We are a society of doers, achievers, and builders. Our country is dynamic, constantly growing, and becoming ever bigger, richer, and stronger. We do not subscribe to a “zero sum” mentality. We do not labor for the sake of laboring. And we like our sports teams to score.

Hi JRios1968-

Your response is senseless, juvenile, and incorrect. Thanks for playing.

Hi Cyclopean Squid-

"...Americans don't like soccer because we are bad at it. If Team USA had won the World Cup you'd see a slew of front-runner soccer fans who would claim to have been devotees for life. That's the American spirit -- we like winners and condemn losers..."

We are in complete agreement. The same thing holds true in cycing for Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMond a few years before him. Everyone claimed to "hate" competitive cycling, but they're all suddenly lifelong fans when Americans are standing on the top of the winner's podium.

Right...because the "you should like soccer because soccer players get hot foreign chicks" line is sooooooo mature. What could I have been thinking to address it the way I did?

And what was incorrect about it, really? Everytime I see someone getting on the "soccer player gets the chicks" bandwagon, it's always someone who himself can't get any chicks. More than likely, you're either a 300-pounder who sits at his mom's basement, or a girly-man, when you use that argument...in fact, probably both.

The biggest reason why Americans have little love of soccer is the fact unlike most countries, we have multiple major professional sports that siphon off just about all the best athletes and fan interest away from soccer: the National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, and to a lesser extent the National Hockey League. Also, the enormous recent success of NASCAR racing doesn't help, either.

However, the potential is there for Americans to totally dominate soccer, though. Can you imagine what would happen if American soccer players were composed of people that would normally end up on NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams? It would be scary, to say the least. Can you imagine what the US team would be like if their strikers were strong, tall people like Dwayne Wade and LeBron James? The Europeans would be flattened like a pancake. And you wonder why European club teams are constantly looking for strikers in the mold of Jan Keller from the Czech Republic team.

Hi RayChuang88-

You're 100% correct. Future U.S. soccer teams will be drawing from a huge population of over 300 million people. Other advantages include our advanced fitness training experts, dieticians, sportsmedicine specialists, and modern athletic facilities like the Olympic training center in Colorado. It is only a matter of time before we win the World Cup in the near future.

Yeah, socialist I agree... someone on a World Cup Thread said that Mexico is a third world filled with corrupt politicians however it's held together through Nationalism and Soccer.

The fools flee their Country, their Beloved "Patria" - mother land, that offers them nothing just to then cheer for their team every 4 years.

Some of the most amazing people I've meet are Americanized Cubans and Romanians - they are conservative, of course.

You have a point... With mountain biking there is not much TV advertising however the bikes are pricey. See my dream bike below.

Soccer Ball --- $20

EllsWorth Mountain Bike --- $2,500.

LOL, and everytime I see someone getting on the "soccer players are gay" bandwagon, I can't help thinking that it's someone who lost his girlfriend to one.

What I meant to say was Soccer is truly a poor man's or poor country's sport.

I was once at a party and some of the Euro's that attend started to highly esteem Che Guevarra... they were some artsy types. I asked them if Europe had a "Che". You know, a romanticized Speaker for Communism -- the cool guy with a Starving Artist look and a Cig in his mouth.

No one answered my question so I pressed them further. One "Yugo" girl said "No, that is because Communism was already established".

Translation: Communism was already established, Eastern Europe was destroyed by it and no one was buying it.

If you had more than one brain cell, you would have noticed my child is in Halloween costume, and is carrying his "trick or treat" bag.

What kind of sicko decides to post the pictures of someone else's child? I will say it once, and only once: DON'T YOU EVER POST OR COMMENT ON MY CHILDREN OR THEIR PICTURES. EVER.

Are we clear on that?

I agree with Jim Rome on this one. We don't like soccer because we suck at it.

LOL, and everytime I see someone getting on the "soccer players are gay" bandwagon, I can't help thinking that it's someone who lost his girlfriend to one.

That's the second inane half of the non-sequitur "you should like soccer because soccer players get the chicks" argument. Of course, as night follows day, "soccer players get chicks" is always followed by "if you don't like soccer, you must have been beaten out at (name any activity in life) by a soccer player."

Soccerfan needs to understand...we don't like soccer because we find it boring/inane/pointless/senseless.

What's your next argument, that folks who don't like rock n roll must have been outplayed at something or another by a musician? Those of us who find poker on tv must have lost their shirt in Las Vegas at some point? I can't play basketball...should that make me dislike it? Lots of people don't care for bowling...is it because they got outsmarted by a bowler? I can't stand NASCAR...trust me, it has nothing to do with any personal experiences with NASCAR drivers. Enough with the pre-teen argument that says "you simply have a case of sour grapes against a player, that's why you don't like ________"

We got stuck playing badminton for half a semester in high school. We made the best of it and soon.... Full-contact badminton was born.

Think twice about leaving your feet at the net for that overhead smash...
