Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.
Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.
The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You cant stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.
FReepers cant will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we cant put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.
Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans wont do for the prevailing wage.
So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.
So what?
Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.
It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.
Bush wont let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You wont win, you cant win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.
We lost this one.
Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.
I want to be right. There is no point to winning if it's done for loss of principles.
" Take away there incentive to be here and they will deport themselves."
It's true. They come for the tax-free money and free food stamps, welfare, and medicaid. Much better than they will ever have it at home.
You don't. Are you familiar with Heinlein's idea of what to do with anarchists?
If you want to have fewer Mexicans coming (escaping) to the US, conditions in Mexico need to change radically. They live in a corrupt kleptocracy, and until that stops, they will continue to escape. They need the freedom to succeed or fail. They need the rule of law. If they were truly free, they could stay home.
The US needs to make it clear to the Mexicans in charge, that either they fix the problem on their side of the fence or they can forget about "help" from us.
Amen. There IS NO "pill to swallow" when it comes to my nation's soveriegnty, national security and an invasion of our country, as well as lawbreaking sanctioned by the president himself in favor of non-Americans and big business. Anyone who wants to "swallow a pill" so traitors to their country can win a stupid election is either stupid or seriously has their priorities out of whack. It's WAAAAY bigger than Rats and RHINOs anymore.
All right, enough spam.
Hi PD, you raise some good points, but I'm not ready to lay down before the La Raza bulldozer quite yet. Given the size and nature of the protests this last week, I think pushing the House Bill aggressively will only inspire these folks to more vocal and outrageous protests. Let's push them, and see if we can provoke a backlash against their outrageousness among a majority of the electorate.
Very good question.
I'll be interested in seeing any good answers to this.

I think *you* ought to take a hike!
Best example I can think of is the most recent Senate election in Colorado. The Republicans had Bob Schaffer, a true conservative, and their best candidate. The Democrats had Mike Miles, a former Army Ranger Captain, and their best candidate.
But all of a sudden, the Republicans said, 'Hey - Let's run Pete Coors instead! He has the best chance to win!'; And the Democrats said, 'Hey - Let's run Ken Salazar instead! He has the best chance to win!'
Both were poor candidates, and the people who wanted to win won, and the people who are right lost.
ok, then we need to start fining all the people who pick up the day labor's I see everyday around home depot, that would be a good start
Don't listen to those who are trying to shout you down, your point of view is more proper here than those who would sell out the sovereignty of the US so they can have cheap lawn care.
LOL...it just wouldn't be a complete immigration thread without some illegal immigration apologist pulling out the race card.
"Go puke your pablum on the other side of the border."
If you can't add anything of intelligence, then just say so.
Well said. Amnesty has been done before in the U.S. -several times. Reagan even did it. We're still here. It's time to enforce the laws already on the books, but for the illegals already here there is nothing we can do. We can't deport a population the equivalent of Colorado, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming combined. It's time to move on to the next battle.
Am I the only one on this thread backing you?
