Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

I was a soldier as well, and I would be up for a fight.

I want this to end, and if it ends with violence, so be it.

Just letting everyone know that the Ultimate Sacrifice may be required here. The United States of America IS worth dying for. 'Nuff said.

"We do it daily and the judges can't stop us."

Really? And what do you do with the children that were born here?

Question for the anti-Bush crowd.... would you accept the following legislative compromise:

1. Federal appropriations to enhance border security, including wall construction and stepped up enforcement as may be necessary.

2. Employer review, restrictions, and financial sanctions if employing illegal immigrants. If the illegal chooses to go home because he/she cannot find work, so be it.

3. No overt deportation policy codified into law; and persons already here illegally must get at the end of the line to gain citizenship.

4. Religious exemption/safe house/safe harbor.

Would this compromise be acceptable? Just asking, because an overt deportation policy is a political disaster awaiting the GOP.... deportation would be made to look like the Week of the Broken Glass in Germany in 1938, when Jews were hounded from their homes, and much worse. Just asking.

Well, 5 and 6 year periods are being bandied about. I don't know if you consider these "long term" but they are good mid-term goals toward the long term IMO.

We have a much better chance of stopping illegal immigration than we do of stopping the domestic consumption of drugs.

Heck, we stop the first, we might also stop much of the other.

What do we do with the children of parents who are incarcerated for breaking the law? I guess we'll do just about the same thing with the children of parents who are deported for breaking the law. Why is this difficult to grasp?

I'm not anti-Bush, only anti-"Much of Bush's Policies".

"1. Federal appropriations to enhance border security, including wall construction and stepped up enforcement as may be necessary."

There's NOTHING to talk about (no need to lure more illegals here) until we are a secure nation.

Anyone who does not have a position on freedom or socialism/fascism has nothing important to add on any issue of concern to real Americans.

I have a position, you just asked the wrong question. Your fault, not mine.

You on on the wrong site. (probably on purpose)

Wrong again; unless this is not a site for small government conservatives. Of course, there does seem to be a whole lot of compassionate socialists like Bush on this site.

Dog, You're totally wrong, and here is why: The pro-amnesty/guest worker RINOs love power, and conservatives love America. Because of this, conservatives will never compromise with bad policy that will destroy America. However, RINOs will compromise in order to stay in Washington and enjoy the perks of power.

Frankly, if the RINOs don't shut their mouths on this and abandon the entire idea of a guest worker program/amnesty the hiatus from power that the Republican party is going to suffer - at the hands of its base no less - is going to make the 40 years that Israel spent in the wilderness look like a summer vacation.

And the RINOs will deserve it.

Thank you. We're prepared in our home for a situtation that may be unavoidable. We've been preparing ourselves since 9-11. I'm afraid the only way to keep our country is to snatch it back from the corrupt politicans, hoards of illegal aliens, and islamofacist bent on destroying us. I don't think the meek will inherit the earth, I think the meek will be buried in it.

"That's too bad. I have occasionally had posters tell me to stop writing to them (usually while simultaneously lobbing a slew of insults my way). Each time it happens, I get the sense that the whole purpose is to set me up for possible suspension or banning if I dare to respond to their insults. Though I guess it is also possible that some people are just that thin-skinned."

The thing is that there's a rule on FR regarding personal attacks. Personal attacks are not allowed. Typically, a poster who makes one gets warned by one of the moderators.

Arguing with the moderator, then making more personal attacks will get the poster suspended. That's how it works. Free Republic is a privately-owned forum, and gets to make its own rules, you see. Members violate them at their own risk.

A suspension is not a ban.

Agreed, welfare for illegals need to go, as well as jobs for illegals.

I should be allowed to not participate in the Ponzi Scheme on either end, and if I fall short, that's on me - NO ONE else.

I would have to deal with it the same way I would today if I fall short.

They either stay or go, it's up to the parents.

Some parents leave them with friends or relatives, some parents take them back to what ever country we send them back to.

So you are going to put a few million anchor babies in foster care?

I didn't think there was a big surplus of foster care homes, I guess I'm wrong.

No, it would not be acceptable as anything other than a step in the correct direction if the steps were implemented in the order specified. Given the history, why would any reasonable person believe that the part of the compromise that favors illegal invaders would not be the only part that has a real, actual effect?

...deportation would be made to look like the Week of the Broken Glass in Germany in 1938, when Jews were hounded from their homes, and much worse. Just asking.

First off, illegal invaders have no homes here. None. Their homes, if they have any, are in the nation of which they are citizens, which is not the USA. There is nothing about their status that is the equivalent of the status of Jewish citizens in pre-WW2 Germany. And the MSM hyenas are not elected and therefore they should have no say at all in how this country in run beyond their ability to vote and speak as citizens. They should certainly not be an elite class whose opinion is weighted thousands of times more than that of other citizens when fundamental decisions on the future and nature of the USA are considered.

We may as well be out of power NOW. Our 'seniority' status in both the House of Congress and the Senate may as well not exist.

Is that right. Sorry, I cannot agree.

Executing WOT. Overthrew two tyrannical and dangerous regimes, liberating 50 million people worldwide. Enactment and reauthorization of Patriot Act.

Record economic growth, home ownership, and series of personal and business tax cuts.

Two outstanding confirmations to the United States Supreme Court, thus shifting the Court to the right for a generation ahead. Plus dozens of federal district and appellate court confirmations of strict constructionists.

That's for starters. Yeah, the GOP Congress and the President have been real lazy. And we'd have gotten all the above with a Democratic President and/or Congress. Yeah, right.

Why are you calling me anti-Bush? Because he has mishandled immigration issues? You said:

1. Enhance security.
2. Sanction employers.
3. No deportation.
4. Religious exemption.

I'm fine with 1 and 2 but 3 and 4 are a no, IMHO. Especially the safe house idea. This is what 'coyotes' promise these illegals anyway. You would play to that?!
