Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

"We accomplish nothing if we are out of power..."

We may as well be out of power NOW. Our 'seniority' status in both the House of Congress and the Senate may as well not exist. The GOP has been spineless, flaccid, limpwristed, wimpy and slack.

I believe you and others who agree with your point of view may be surprised to find that many Republican citizens are indeed Conservatives who've become weary of too much compassion, especially when it comes to our country being sold out from under us without our say-so. We have a representative government that is elected. I object to being treated like some sort of inconsequential peasant once those for whom I voted are ensconced in power. Perhaps it is time for a modern day Tea Party.

The moment we start trying to enforce the immigration laws, watch downtown LA disappear in a mass of Hispanic outrage. You thought the LA/Rodney King riots were bad? That'll seem like a Sunday afternoon picnic compared to what will happen. Remember: there were FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND people in the march on LA this weekend. Now imagine those same people, not peacefully marching, but looting and burning and rioting.

Let 'em.

The LAPD AND the LA County Sheriff's Office don't have the manpower to quell the kind of riots I forsee. Kiss most of downtown LA "Adios".

Let it burn. I don't know which I detest more, Los Angeles, or San Francisco.

You all saw this weekend what kind of numbers they can turn out on short notice. It's frightening. And, if anyone goes up against them, it WILL ignite a possible race war.

It will come anyhow. Let it begin now so my grandchildren will still live in the United States of America. NOT the United States of Mexico.

Is that what we want? Because once you start enforcing those laws that are ALREADY ON the books, that IS what WILL HAPPEN.

This country is worth fighting for and dying for. Ask a soldier.

Social Security (that Socialist/Communist abomination) needs to be replaced by personal responsibility and better financial education.

If someone needs the rest of the hemisphere brought into America to pay a fraction of what they put into SS, then the Communist Ponzi Scheme needs to go away.

How you can comapre our min wage laws and SS to France is way beyond me.

Easy. SS is a socialist program. France has many of those too.

You are nothing but a profiteer who would pay peopple $1.00 per hour if you could get away with it.

Grossly wrong. If I was I would hire illegals, wouldn't I? And I don't.

I just don't believe in minimum wage law or other terrible legislation that ties the arms of business...that's all. This plays havoc with the economy.

Good post, chilling perhaps, but truthful.
I suspect it will happen during my lifetime, hope not!

"They found a way around the horrific minimum wage and regulatory laws which were unfairly keeping them back; they found a way to stay in business."

Right. A pack of criminals broke the law because it was in their financial interest to do so. Let's extend that line of reasoning to bank-robbers and muggers also, shall we? A criminal is a criminal. Rewarding criminals just produces more crime. Period. Take away the economic benefits to be gained by breaking the law, and the employers will quit hiring illegals, and the illegals self-deport. Rule-of-law wins out and the day is saved for America. Ignore the rule of law, and reward mob rules, and you'll get more of the same.

" No, what I'm OK with is a "level playing field" where Gov't decreases demands on what an employer must offer workers."

Keep dreamin!

Do you think for one minute that if this BS guest worker crap is passed...and there is NO improvement in our border security....that the SCUMBAG employers who now hire illegals will bypass those newly made legal workers and NOT hire MORE illegals?

This is exactly WHY that clown in the Whitehouse has absolutely NO credibility at all on this whole issue.

You can NOT stop scumbags employers from hiring MORE illegals unless the border is secured between legal crossings.

You can NOT stop scumbag employers from hiring MORE illegals unless there are strict laws and severe penalties in place that are enforced against hiring illegals.

To think otherwise is an exercise in mental masturbation.

GWB has no cred. None whatsoever on this issue.

"I say... you want a guest worker program? No problemo. First offense for hiring an illegal after it is implemented is a mandatory $25,000.00 fine. Second offense is $100,000.00 fine. Third offense is forfeiture of the business and mandatory 5 years in jail. Let's see how the lobbies REALLY like that....LOL"

That might work if there was a plan that would allow the parents of the anchor babies to work.

Of the estimated 20 million illegals, I'll bet that 25% of that count are in fact anchor babies.

Build the fence, put national guard on the borders, and deal with jobs for the anchor babies parents.

Do you think that liberal judges would even allow the parents to be deported?

We do it daily and the judges can't stop us.

We won't win the Drug War either. Think can get Republicans to embrace legalizaion on that issue too?

We have a much better chance of stopping illegal immigration than we do of stopping the domestic consumption of drugs.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that number. I do not think it is that high.

Yes, I see see wisdom in it. Immigration has come to the fore after simmering around in the background for years. Now that people are getting educated, illegal immigration will become less tolerated.
