Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

I remember when they, probably including you, said Meirs was a done deal too. We will see on this one as well, so don't count your chickens before they are hatched on the ILLEGAL immigrant issue.

No, it won't just be you and I(correct usage) but it will be most of the republican party, or at least enough that they will lose some seats this year and, if they continue to ignore the problem, we will lose the presidency in 08. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the majority of the people of this country, the ones who can vote, oppose an open borders policy and amnesty. You are, once again(remember all your wrong predictions)are whistling in the wind, hoping that your views will prevail. They won't.

What kind of immigration policy will we have if we have all Democrats in office?

The only way it could be worse than the Bush policy is if they enact forced bussing of illegal immigrants into the US. Somehow, I don't see them taking that step.

Excuse me sir/madam, won't you tell us exactly what it is that makes you such an authority on this matter, and why anyone should give a crap what you think about it?

Is this what happens to Freepers with whom certain mods have it in for for criticizing a stupid vanity and its author?

Maybe I should be wearing a Yellow cyber-star?

Who are you anyway, Ms. Admin Moderator? Why are you picking on one particular FReeper over others who have made disparaging remarks referencing FR's Pukin Dog? This is what I was referring to in a recent post of mine to PD. (Post 256)

He gets special treatment and F16 gets threats from the Mods. PD requested that F16 not post to him. Are you now watching PD's behind 24/7 to insure that no one steps on his coattails? And why the specifically condescending attitude "Please knock off the personal stuff, and that means you."? (At least you did say 'please'; I'll give you that, but is that 'stern mother to misbehaving child' type of admonishment really necessary?)

Note: I do not know if it has been requested of me not to post to Pukin Dog (I think he will confirm that for me) but of course I did so in this case as a matter of FR netiquette. If I'm on his Do Not Post To Me List, I'll need to be officially informed.

One more thing: Vanities, no matter who the author, are personal opinion and therefore more prone to blunt comments indicating disagreement.

Of course my solution would work. All those gross socialistic hiring regulations have had a huge negative effect and we are seeing it now?

Get rid of regulation and small business could afford to pay American workers much much better. And American applicants would be more attractive to hire because they would have a "I really want this job and will work hard for you" rather than an "I have a right to this job and you owe me health insurance" attitude.

And Americans speak English which small businesses would also find immensely preferable.

One other thing for you Mr. Big Thinker. Conservatives stand on principle and not just winning. It separates us from the idiots at DU who would do anything to win.

Then let the prevailing wage rise until Americans will do the job.

I wasn't aware of a government ceiling on wages.

So instead of deporting 20 million people, we can just arrest, try and lock up the 5 or so million who employ them. Not hardened criminals, mind you, mostly otherwise law-abiding small business owners, the guys who sponsor Little League teams and join Rotary. Oh yeah, Americans will be completely behind that plan. /s

A book called "Reefer Madness" came out a few years ago, on the underground economy. Very worth-while reading. While I agree with building a wall and/or using the military to keep potential terrorists and other criminals out, our economy is too dependent on illegals to not have some sort of "guest worker" program. (And I agree repealing the minimum wage and every other worker-related reg might help too, but we need to be realistic.)

Based on his earlier comments, it seems that his habit of employing illegal aliens gives him some insight into the matter.

Ok, I got it from FR, if you must know. I don't feel like looking up the post and the link that was supplied with that post so do it yourself. You made a few statements yourself, care to give me links to your statements? I thought not. Usually the people who ask for links can support their own claims and try to lay it on to the replier. ILLEGALS are killing this country, we import crime, disease and terrorist. Can you prove we don't?

Get rid of all regulations and small business's will still hire the cheapest labor to make a profit. Again, Citizens lose out. Illegals will always be the cheapest labor, and you are not about to remove them from the market place.
