President Jacques Chirac for the first time on Thursday raised the threat of a nuclear response to states that launch "terrorist" attacks against France.
"Leaders of any state that uses terrorist means against us, as well as any that may be envisaging -- in one way or another -- using weapons of mass destruction, must understand that they would be exposing themselves to a firm and appropriate response on our behalf," he said.
"That response could be conventional, it could also be of another nature," Chirac said in a clear reference to nuclear weapons during a visit to a French nuclear base in the northwestern region of Brittany.
Chirac said that France had configured its nuclear arsenal to be able to respond "flexibly and reactively" to any threat, by reducing the number of nuclear heads on certain missiles on board its submarines.
"Faced with a regional power, our choice is not between doing nothing an annihilating it," Chirac said.
The French president did not single out any country by name. Nor did he say that France's nuclear arsenal could be used against terrorist groups, as opposed to states, as is the case with the US nuclear doctrine changed under President George Bush.
Also in contrast to the United States, France has not developed so-called "mini-nukes" capable of striking specific military targets such as underground bunkers within a country. - AFP
France will loose the dreaded Limburger Cheese Bomb.
:))) oh my......lol..
The worm has turned? Is the world ending?
L
No..the world is starting to have a new beginning..but, with some heavy rolls before that happens......Iran is to be watched...if we are weakened by a major attack or, well, a religious event, I'll say...then all hell will break loose or...the EU/UN will take over....
This is a threat he knows he will never have to back up, because no STATE ever owns-up to terror strikes.
Relax everybody, its just the old dog off his feed and
feeling grumpy. He knows he's not got long as king of the kennel.
It will be a cold day in Hell..
the problem is that cold day is very close because, the New World Order is on track....look up the Counsel on Foreign Relations, Tri-lateral commission...and the "idea" we shall say, of them being front organizations.....It is already in place......since 1973......
Yep...I said the same thing but not as definite as you did. I agree completely....
Well see what happens? You can bet on seeing a response if a mass attack hits any country and can be traced back to that country...it won't be pretty anywhere.
"That response could be conventional, it could also be of another nature,"
No, no, no...
"Conventional" for the French means the white flag approach to warfare.
"Another nature" for the French could be holding their ground. Hard to tell though...
You see what happened to Tancredo when he made a similar comment.
:)) they're just trying to hold on to their coffee shops....
Guess which language the word "charade" comes from?
FReeper JasonC is saying that Chirac's announcement is meant to say that France will allow Iran to get nuclear weapons. He is apparently just warning Iran upfront how not to use those weapons...as if the Iranian planning boards will now go ahead and say "Damn. Guess we better scrap our plans to kill all the frogs."
I like JasonC's conceptualization although I don't necessarily agree that is going on. I can only *hope* that JasonC is correct on this, because we are going to just ignore the frogs anyway on this.
My take is that Al Qaeda has a nuke (has had nukes for years) and finally wants to use it...now that they realize they will not win conventionally (via carbombs) in Iraq.
Correct. France doesn't mind at all if an Iranian nuke levels Tel Aviv. Those smelly Ayatollahs have Israel in their sights, not France which is a customer and has shown it will do ANYTHING to curry favor with Islamic scum who have oil with Saddam's Iraq being a fine case.
excuse me, but can you pass me the grey poupon?
Wow, france goes up against north african countries, past colonies that they helped screw up in the first place.
Small insignificant armies that even mexico could put in line.
Talk is cheap and ol jack of france is full of crap. And france is full of surrender monkeys.
