WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."
In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.
The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.
When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.
Me either!!!LOL great tagline!!!
There is nothing conservative about this crap.
I guess he didn't see the episode where Rosie O'Donnel got slammed, or where Cartman killed the hippies...also, the show is actually respectful towards Jesus-he's a sympathetic figure; it's some of the people who supposedly follow him that the show makes fun of. I'd love to see them take on Fred Phelps.
They do have a disclaimer at the beginning of the show that says something to the effect that "if you have not been offended, we apologize".
Time is our most precious "gift" and I have never wasted one second of it on South Park.
Obviously. Were you a disciple of the Jews who accepted or rejected Jesus?
but the brothers and sisters are.
Those "brothers and sisters" are not sons and daughters of the Blessed Mother.
So much for this being "new" theory, huh?
So much for you disproving your ignorance, again.
"There have been certain STRANGE folk who have wished to suggest from this passage [Matt 1:25] that the Virgin Mary had other children than the Son of God, and that Joseph had then dwelt with her later; BUT WHAT FOLLY THIS IS!
"For the gospel writer did not wish to record what happened afterwards; he simply wished to make clear Joseph's obedience and to show also that Joseph had been well and truly assured that it was God who had sent his angel to Mary. He had therefore NEVER dwelt with her nor had he shared her company....
"And besides this, our Lord Jesus Christ is called the first-born. This is NOT because there was a second or a third, but because the gospel writer is paying regard to the precedence. Scripture speaks thus of naming the first-born whether or no there was any question of the second. Thus we see the intention of the Holy Spirit. This is why to lend ourselves to FOOLISH SUBTLETIES WOULD BE TO ABUSE HOLY SCRIPTURE...."
John Calvin, Sermon on Matthew 1:22-25, Geneva 1562
"We have already said in another place that according to the custom of the Hebrews all relatives were called 'brethren.' Still Helvidius [a 4th century heretic] has shown himself to be IGNORANT of this by stating that Mary had many children just because in several places they are spoken of as 'brethren' of Christ."
John Calvin, Commentary on Matthew 13:55, Geneva, 1562
"Concerning what has happened since this birth the writer of the gospel SAYS NOTHING...certainly it is a matter about which NO ONE will cause dispute unless he is somewhat curious; on the contrary there never was a man who would contradict this in obstinacy unless he were a PIG-HEADED and FATUOUS [i.e. foolish and stupid] person."
John Calvin, Commentary on Matthew 1:25, Geneva, 1562
Its certainly applicable to a lot of us!
I know someone who suffers from severe clinical depression. She is also a big "South Park" fan. Watching a favorite episode put her in a better mood and makes her happier than a week's supply of paxil.
If watching "South Park" is therapeutic for a depressed person, it could actually save that person's life.
To each his own. Happy for your friend.
No. This thread illustrates that too many people don't have a sense of humor. Has nothing to do with politics, or a schism within the Republican party itself, but if it did, and perhaps it does, the "Clean-Starched Underwear" Republicans, who comprise a miniscule percentage of the GOP itself, seem to be on the losing end of this whole argument.
One of the pillars of Conservatism is freedom, and in this instance, Freedom Of Speech.
The central message that needs to be repeated is this, "If you don't like it, don't watch it, and stop trying to tell other people what they can and cannot watch".
No, you're simply a meathead.
I've only watched maybe two episodes of South Park since it begun.
However, none of your posts reflect that.
I don't call her a co-mediatrix.
I doubt you know what co-mediatrix means
Wow... You're like the energizer bunnie: You keep going and going, being wrong and more wrong...
In about a half of all episodes, there's a "moral" to the story, and it's the kids who get it right... The best example that comes to mind being the NAMBLA episode... The pedophiles are whining to the police arresting them about how they're just celebrating their rights... And it's the little kids who say, "Dude, you're having sex with children! That's really f****d up!"

I really hope we work this out of our systems before next November--we have some Democrat brains to beat out.
Blame Canada Colorado!

This thread is talking about the South Park that is nothing but mocking Christainity, fart jokes, and foul language
I saw something on Headline News over the weekend on their entertainment news show, and they were talking about South Park episode that lampooned Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise spent most of the show "in the closet", and one of the main characters begged Tom to "Come out of the closet", lampooning the rumor that he's homosexual, and they lampooned Scientology as a cult on that same episode.
That was a great episode!
They have done a spoof of "Schindler's List" and they have mocked Jews and Judaism in many episodes, "Ike's Bris," "Jew Camp," "Passion of the Jew," "Kyle Goes to Yeshiva"
I had forgotten about some of those episodes... And then there was the episode where Kyle's nebbish-y cousin from New York comes over... Complete stereotype of the "Woody Allen-esque," annoying, New York Jew.

Well, that Bible of yours doesn't tell you that those "brothers and sisters" are the sons and daughters of the Blessed Mother. So don't go wagering any dough on your knowledge of Scripture that you can't afford to lose.
By the way, that Bible of yours says that Lot is Abraham's brother, Genesis 14:14, it also says that Lot was the son of Haran, Abrahams brother, Genesis 11:2628. Turns out Lot is actually Abrahams nephew not his brother.
The best episode was lampooning the Mormons. I laughed til I cried!
