BISHOPS' PRESIDENT BLASTS 'SOUTH PARK' EPISODE LAMPOONING MARY (Disgusting!)

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."

In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.

The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.

When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.

Speaking of Stewie, "Family Guy" has done some pretty edgy episodes about Jesus, the Pope, etc. They made a "Jew" episode which I thought was really funny, but it was not broadcast, just released on DVD.

I have never seen people get as worked up over "Family Guy" as they do over "South Park." Is it because "Family Guy" is a Fox program? Their "FCC" episode was really pushing the envelope, whereas "South Park" doesn't even have an envelope to push.

Gosh that's reassuring.

Oh, man. You had it right there in your net and you let it get away.

No, I "get" your point. No one was "offended" by the use of the word imbecile, no matter how much you wanted someone to be. Howlin even made it into a bigger joke. The point is that you are the hypocrite here.

Considering it's not a children's show, who the F cares?

If your innocent little ears can't take a swear word, it's easy to change that channel.

Holy frijoles! A South Park fan with an actual sense of humor. Who'da thunk it.

Perhaps I just have a little bit better position to see all this with the proper perspective today.

They argue that in South Park, there are no sacred cows. Well, there is one. South Park. Two: South Park fans.

You have said words against South Park, and us, it's fans, so it's now our duty to get our undies in a bunch over the fact that your undies are in a bunch.

I think the whole thing is kindof humorous.

Rabble! Rabble! Rabble! Rabble! Rabble! Rabble!

"I prefer the kind of classy humor that was mainstream before the Sixties revolution debased our culture. Benny, Burns and Hope. No obscenity. Little if any vulgarity."

It's all about what you prefer. Clearly many good conservatives, good people, enjoy the humor of South Park. You purport to tell us we're wrong for doing so?

The gentlemen you mention were very funny. So were Pryor, Carlin and Murphy, all who used a great deal of profanity. Listening to them did not make me a bad person, no matter what you may think.

We know we're being laughed at. Cultural leftists have always used derisive laughter as a way of undermining traditional values and people who defend them. That goes way back. Lenin probably laughed mockingly at the defenders of the Orthodox Church.

I'm not laughing at you and Lenin never laughed at the Orthodox Church which is why he sought to destroy it...the opiate of the people, remember.

I think what some of us may be trying to suggest to you is that we think that South Park takes aim at every easy target and sometimes that target closely resembles us and then paybacks are even more sweet.

Is some or much of the show gross and indecent? Yes. So is life. Are the elements mostly funny? Yes...and that is what makes it an escape from gray.

Weird how it bugs you that I use innocuous words like "imbecile" and "hypocrite" while you defend a show that uses the most vile of profanities in just about every sentence along with references to menstruating women and other bodily functions.

You people are flat out bizarre.

Another word I'm sure you'll find offensive.

Maybe if I start modifying my name-calling with F words you'll be a little more mollified.

...none of them realize that Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, et al, believed in and taught of the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Mother and that Jesus was an only child.

Calvin's commentary on Luke 1:34:
The conjecture which some have drawn from these words, that she had formed a vow of perpetual virginity, is unfounded and altogether absurd. She would, in that case, have committed treachery by allowing herself to be united to a husband, and would have poured contempt on the holy covenant of marriage; which could not have been done without mockery of God. Although the Papists have exercised barbarous tyranny on this subject, yet they have never proceeded so far as to allow the wife to form a vow of continence at her own pleasure.

The people that think crude humor is new don't know their Shakespeare very well.

I can think of fat jokes, fart jokes, drunken impotency jokes, and that's just Hamlet.

No, it's really not. And if it is, it's not because some people like to swear. Swearing has been around since the beginning of language.

Ditto here. Knowing beforehand that this episode wasn't one I cared to watch: I didn't.

It's just so simple! :)
