Douglas County sheriffs deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.
Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks. Mirecki
Mirecki
I didnt know them, but Im sure they knew me, he said.
Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.
I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind, he said. They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.
He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Im mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots, he said.
Douglas County Sheriffs Officials are classifying the case as an aggravated battery. They wouldnt say exactly where the incident happened, citing the ongoing investigation
The sheriffs department is looking for the suspects, described as two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large pickup truck.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS or the sheriffs office at 841-0007.
Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a nice slap in the big fat face of fundamentalists.
The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last week the class would be canceled.
We don't have a clue they were either conservatives or Christians, and neither does anyone else. So what have we to be ashamed of pray tell.
My bad. I thought you were keeping an open mind. But you're not skeptical. You've discounted what he said, because of his views.
If he'd had some actual damage -- broken bones, trauma, abrasions, a boo boo -- I'd actually give him some thought.
Reports say he has bruises, contusions, and a broken tooth.
There you go again. You pretend to know more about me than I know about my self, yet I have mere suspicions as to your qualities, motivation and faults.
I won't point out the irony to you.
I gave a list of perfectly good reasons why I consider him an uncredible source.
Reports say he has bruises, contusions, and a broken tooth.
Not this article. Read it. No mention of the tooth. In fact, in this article, the quotes have him downplaying his injuries. Interestingly, I have experience with a chipped tooth. Experienced it playing racquetball. Had to have it bonded. I got a few bruises from that game too, although the tooth resulted from my own racquet. True story.
Any discipline that ipso facto declares God to be outside of consideration is by definition atheistic. What's wrong with being an atheist?
Post number 461, which I haven't seen YOU object to yet.
Why not?
This one did. Also that he had X-rays and a CAT scan. Now that could be untrue, but it's so easily checked with the hospital I doubt it is.
And why you think anyone is interested in your racketball injuries is beyond me.
Probably because he posted this (w.r.t. a photo of Mirecki) in 351
A face almost everyone would love to stick a fist in.
"Is that really the issue PaleHorse OR is it that in polite society where everyone buries his/her head in the sand to keep out all unpleasantness, views like those I expressed above are unacceptible?"
Just answer the question. How many abortionists have YOU killed? If that answer is "zero," why do you expect others to do YOUR dirty work for you?
Aren't they laying it on thick? Boohoo. On IM, I bet they're cracking each other up over their outpourings of "grief " over this alleged episode.
They demonstrate a trumped up, faux indignation aimed at a wishful caricature of Christianity. Some folks long to be hated just to demonstrate how "righteous" they are. You're right. They don't really care about this pugilized bubblehead. He's the perfect tool to sharpen their self-manufactured loathing.
I can tell you this: Had I stumbled upon two fellows pummeling one man my sympathy would be inclined toward the one at a disadvantage, regardless of any ideologies involved. I would like to see the perpetrators caught and punished accordingly.
On the other hand, those who consider existence to be nothing more than the product of unguided forces of nature have fairly well excluded themselves from credible moral commentary. They can beat their chests for someone else who cares. For them this incident is but another example of nature taking its course.
I'm reading that article now. Interesting contradictions. In the Kansan story, it is reported that the metal object was for certain and that they hit him "for about one minute". According to this article, the fists were certain and the metal object is only a possibility.
In the Kansan article, he apparently pulled over to let them pass but then was the first to get out of his car.
The X-ray and CAT scan reportage were not attributed to the prof. I'm sure he got them. He "said he suffered a broken tooth". This is an interesting use of phrase. Shouldn't it have been obvious to the reporter? Could have been a phone interview, I suppose.
"Mirecki said he was taking a long, pre-dawn drive in the country to clear his mind in wake of the recent controversy and was planning to end his drive by stopping at a restaurant for breakfast."This is not adding up. Remember, these thugs knew who he was. How? Does he have a sign on his car? They followed him and he just happened to want to take a drive that would take him out of town that day. To clear his head. At 6:40am. You clear your head at the end of the day, not after a refreshing sleep. Now he pulls over to let them pass. Fine. Then he gets out of his car. He gets out. I don't know where you live, RWP, but in Lawrence, Kansas today, right now, the wind chill is three degrees Farenheit and was even colder yesterday. Nobody is just getting out of their car. If it were me and the tailgaters didn't zoom ahead, I'd be annoyed and I'd take off. This is not adding up.
Thank you for linking to that article.
Hoi, a fifth of pithy! A wishful charicature...but why do they wish it?
293?
Is it alright with you that professors set up classes to ridicule other people's belief's and then call it a chance to give them a slap in the "big fat face?" Why the silence over this a$$hole's actions? Do you sense any kind of cause and effect present between his actions and the consequences? If you set up a class like that would you expect accolades?
Your blindness in this case likely extends to other blindnesses.
Speaking only for myself, Mirecki was an ass. He did apologize, but even if he hadn't, it still doesn't deserve violence in response.
He might well have a bumper sticker or two. Given his outspoken opinions, I wouldn't be surprised.
Lots of guys out around dawn in pickups at the moment. It's hunting season; I get up before dawn and hear the shots outside. Lots of guys with a little gasoline in their bellies too, even at 6:30 a.m.. They see some pinko driving slowly, tailgate him, he pulls over, they stop for a little rumble, recognize him (his picture's been on the paper and on TV in Kansas), maybe he gives them some lip, and they work him over a bit.
Turns out the best breakfast place in Lawrence is on the south side of town, so that adds up, too. Lawrence isn't that big a place.
It was -5 F this morning when I went out to feed the birds. You live around here, you get used to it.
Be sure to ask her about astronauts, too. LOL.
