Three Novell OpenSUSE community web site were defaced on Sunday by politically motivated hackers. Defacement archive Zone-H reports that a group called IHS Iran Hackers Sabotage broke into OpenSUSE.org, wiki.novell.com and forge.novell.com to post a message stating that it was Iran's right to develop nuclear power. All three sites were defaced in the same way.

This makes multiple times in the last few days that servers related to Novell Inc. have been compromised. Apparently the hackers are swarming in like buzzards over the kill. Hopefully the perpetrators will be identified and rightfully prosecuted, and Novell will finally figure out how to secure their Linux.

Interestingly, 1 server is running Linux, the 2 others running Netware. Sounds like someone's password got compromised.

Where is that information coming from? Novell's PR has been working overtime to keep these incidents firmly under the rug.

It was probably an inside job. It's pretty obvious based on their political leanings {/kidding, but not really}

Actually, I stand corrected. All three are running Netware. Shows you right in the HTTP header.

Netcraft.com shows you also.

Actually, who knows. Netcraft says Netware, but also says Linux in the web server description.

Funny, since it's 99.9% assured any nuclear supercomputers over in Iran will be runnig some free copy of Linux they got from someone like Novell.

Netcraft isn't 100% accurate. Probably Open Enterprise Server, which is some sort of Linux/Netware combination, right?

What are the chances the found a hole in SUSE Linux because the could read the source code? That can't be the reason why because the OSS crowd has assured me that the more eyes on code ensures that it's secure.

They're gonna need Red Hat's implementation of SE/Linux(courtesy of the NSA) and SE/x-windows

Sounds like someone's password got compromised.

If you read the machine names that were allegedly hacked you see that they are a wiki machine and a forge machine.

Wiki is MEANT to be a community authoring system where anyone can post. Hacking a wiki is like writing on the sidewalk with chalk, no one can stop you, but anyone can piss on what you wrote ad any given seconds.

Forge is like source forge, where you can all post but its tighter controlled than a wiki.

Synopsis: Yawn. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Who knows, since there's no reason to believe the number of "bad" eyes is less than any supposed "good" eyes. How often does n3wbie and shadow check for holes and report them I wonder. Isn't that how it's supposed to work, since they are using the free software, they need to be contributing back somehow? From each according to his ability, for each according to his need, or something like that?

Well it does say "From each according to his ability" I guess they are giving what they can...running a ping list on a conservative forum is the best they can do.
