Excerpt...

Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.

Sartain believes that's not necessary.

"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."

Arrests for shoplifting

Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.

In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.

Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.

She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.

I've been told that you should never sleep with anyone crazier than yourself. Sounds like those two were in a race to the bottom.

I'm just impressed with the effectiveness of those shoplifting programs though I'm starting to wonder what they mean by "community service".

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when their church pastor was giving them pre marriage counseling.

I don't know what has happened to FR. She's a human being. She has problems, she didn't kill anyone. This is nobody's business anymore. Does it make everyone feel better to insult and mock this woman. What if she were your daughter, or niece, or friend. Is there any compassion left on FreeRepublic? Everybody sitting around on a Saturday night making fun of someone they don't even know. Shame on all of you.

That's a lot of shoplifting and recidivism. At her age, there's likely to be some baggage. If not that, something else. There might be other things she hasn't disclosed to her man.

Sometimes women do clean up their acts if and when they get a decent guy to marry.

I don't think she will be able to take the pressure of living up to the standards in her church/local community.

When the story first broke last week, it seemed that everyone down there in Duluth felt sorry for her and stated that she should not be prosecuted, that she'd "suffered enough". I was astounded to think they didn't think she needed any punishment, for what she put her family, wedding guests, the police and the city of Duluth through.

But it sounds like they've handled her delicately before, based on the penalties dished out for her shoplifting. I'm no expert on sentencing, but doesn't community service and probation seem pretty light for three shoplifting convictions? This girl and her family must have some influence in that town. Are they protecting her because she's some type of delicate Southern belle or something? I can't see any man getting away with such a small penalty.

Yes. Would you want your son to marry her if things are as they are being reported?

She has problems

So does just about everyone sitting in prison.

Where's your unbridled compassion for them?

And here's another question - say lil' Miss Cornea stuck to her story, and some innocent "hispanic" was accosted by the cops because of her story.

Or what if she STAYED on the run for a month or two - what HELL would John Mason be going thru? Knowing he had nothing to do with it, but yet having the likes of Greta Van Sucker accusing him?

Screw that. This is a 30-something y/o ADULT FEMALE, and she should face the consequences for her HEINOUS actions.

The attorney Jennifer's family has hired is the former prosecuting attorney that prosecuted her for shoplifting!

That's not the point. She's just a girl. A human being. She obviously needs help, but it says more about the people who sit around making fun of her. Years ago this would have been a private situation. Again, nothing she does effect any of our lives. It's cruel to keep tearing her apart like this.
