Excerpt...

Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.

Sartain believes that's not necessary.

"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."

Arrests for shoplifting

Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.

In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.

Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.

She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.

Damn Cajun.. what are you? Her soulmate or something?

I listened to your spiel about "southern women" and the only thing I came away with is, if what you say is true, we should have NEVER LET YOU VOTE.

Men do leave. So do women. They don't go through this charade and put Latino men in danger.Crying rape when she wasn't is really, really an insult to women who have been raped. I have no sympathy for this woman. To make these allegations is just plain evident of a mean, manipulative streak that can hurt innocent men and women.

I don't know what has happened to FR. She's a human being. She has problems, she didn't kill anyone. This is nobody's business anymore. Does it make everyone feel better to insult and mock this woman. What if she were your daughter, or niece, or friend. Is there any compassion left on FreeRepublic? Everybody sitting around on a Saturday night making fun of someone they don't even know. Shame on all of you.

If it'd make you feel better, we could make fun of you instead.

You don't have any female relations who you love who have found themselves in trouble?

Nope, no multiple felons in my family. (Come to think of it, no implants, either.)

As for the suggestion that she found herself in trouble, that sounds like something from a 1970s liberal sociologist. She is responsible for her own crimes, her own lies, her own misconduct, and the resulting publicity in a post Peterson, post Hacking world - no one else. And there has still been no public apology from her.

If you are involved in putting together the defense, I would suggest that she go with the theory that the implants made her do it. It's better than the celibate boyfriend defense currently being floated.

Oh, please. Put Latino men in danger? Are you kidding me? yea, for the three hours she told the police this, all the Latino men in New Mexico were in mortal danger. The only difference between this and what happens ever day in America is that this was covered by cable news.

SHe owes NOBODY but her family an apology. Is it going to make your life any different if she apologizes to you? That's insane and it's very liberal thinking.

I doubt that I am her soul mate.

But I am old and my judgements of young people are not as harsh as a young person. I have watched alot of people over many years do terrible things, worse than this woman, and come to be better people over time.

I think the older I get the less inclined I am to be hard on people, especially people I see as fragile and imperfect and stupid and who don't think.

At least she hasn't stolen in years.

I guess I just don't want to count someone out, punish them unmercifully and if that makes me soft, so be it.

Multiple sex partners ... failed marriages ... Kids who have "problems with authority figures".... family members with mental illness (otherwise known as "the crazy aunt in the basement")... a history of using drugs .... a few crossdressers... a few alcoholics... a few people who aren't sure of their child's father's identity but they tell everyone it's their husband's and hold their breath ... previous abortions ... I could go on and on....

For the last time, woman, GET OUT OF MY CLOSET! ;)

I expect her to make an apology to the community to ackowledge publicly that we do not tolerate this behavior, that it can have dangerous and costly consequences. I don't want to have " a show" or be "appeased". I am not " pitifully eager to forgive her."

I just think its the appropriate thing to do and sets the record straight for what we expect in our society.

Ya.. and what if she stuck to this story?

Hmmm?

I bet you were one of the Freepers who were ready to hang John Mason high, prior to Miss Adventure turning up fine.

BUT SHE DIDN'T. And I don't even know what you mean about Mason. I never said a thing about him.

add to your list of women with "issues" the abominable mothers who pimped their sons out to Michael Jackson.

Next to them, Jennifer is an absolute angel.

I hope she gets the help she needs, the husband she deserves, and peaceful anonymity in her old age.

Guess you might just feel different if you were a Hispanic man in Albequerque. That sarcasm does not take seriously what that kind of behavior can result in. It wasn't so long ago when Blacks were lynched after a false accusation of "rape." This shouldn't happen in America whether its covered in cable news or not.

Nor do I. But make no mistake; a punishment is in order.

Again 3 years probation and repayment sounds about right.

I want to know if she kept the blanket.

Excerpted from an email from my sister in Albuquerque.

"I knit blankets for Project Linus. That is a local group that meets weekly at my senior center. We knit and crochet blankets that are given to the All Faiths Receiving Home. They are also given to police officers to give to children in crisis situations that they come across.

Well...one of our ladies held up a news picture of HER blanket for Project Linus covering the head of the Run Away Bride from Georgia! We all howled.

Then one little lady piped up and complained, "How did SHE get one?" The knitter who made the blanket deadpanned, "Well....they ARE for disturbed children".

I appreciated the thought you expressed in post #104.

I'm 48 years old, and boy inside still lives. With my eyes closed, waking in morning, I'm still 18. I hope that doesn't go away.
