The President has usurped a massive amount of Americans' good-natured character/good will. $350 million dollars reflects very well on the U.S. government. All of that has been usurped from the taxpayers.

Had the President put it to a vote of the people he likely would have gotten a 'yes' to give aid. In that way it would have been the people's good will that would receive it's just deserved recognition for their compassion.

It is wrong, very wrong for the President/government to usurp what is rightfully each individual person's deeply personal ethical concerns on doing right by their own conscience.

It sickens me that the government can so easily usurp such personal and integral-to-the-individual essence of character.

President Bush needs to address the people regarding this very important aspect.

This forum prides itself on "working to roll back decades of governmental largesse," yet just about every single post I've seen regarding this recent catastrophe tries to justify our government's "generosity." Many FReepers harshly criticize federal welfare programs like Social Security, so how is this any different?110

It's groupthink and collectivism on massive scale. It has spread around the world. The vast majority of people willingly sacrifice the individual for the greater good of the community. What they all forget or never thought about is that the community cannot exist without the individual. The individual is primary -- comes first. That's a fact, That's reality. Most people, to their own detriment, continually attempt to put the cart before the horse. It has created a massive illusion that the community is primary. It simply is not.210

Do you honestly think that our giving aid to the victims of the tsunamis is being given to make someone look good?

The President has emptied the Disaster Relief Fund, and we'll be giving more. He should address the country about this and soon.

By doing so the president has made the United States "look good" if you want to put it that way. You may express your individual good will by donating personally to any number of private organizations as millions of people all over the world have done, even though their governments have spent their tax dollars to make their governments "look good" as you so cynically put it. I personally feel that it is human generosity and concern born out of the horror generated by the enormity of such a disaster and the tragedy of so much human loss and suffering.

I'd vote "yes" in heartbeat; we'd probably go yes 75%, no 25% nationwide. Unfortunately, it takes so long to get ANYTHING voted upon that the aid would be tied up for months or years.

Let's try a "disaster relief appropriations" vote, a nationwide public question at the next election as to whether the congress shall be authorized to render aid of this sort. Let the people decide.

Probably. If it were put up to only the citizens that have to pay for this rather than the many that pay no income tax the result would probably be opposite & for good reason - IT'S NOT THEIR MONEY TO DISTRIBUTE.

Excellent point and one I have considered many times. It is dispicable.

"Had the President put it to a vote of the people he likely would have gotten a 'yes' to give aid."

If the US can ever come up with a quick, easy way to get something on a ballot and conduct an election, then I'd be behind this idea. But given the situation, and since I wouldn't see a request to send aid NOT passing, there's no sense in waiting the length of time to go through all that. People are dying.
