Confederate States Of America (2005)
Yahoo Movies ^ | 12/31/04 | Me

Posted on 12/31/2004 2:21:30 PM PST by Caipirabob

What's wrong about this photo? Or if you're a true-born Southerner, what's right?

While scanning through some of the up and coming movies in 2005, I ran across this intriguing title; "CSA: Confederate States of America (2005)". It's an "alternate universe" take on what would the country be like had the South won the civil war.

Stars with bars:

Suffice to say anything from Hollywood on this topic is sure to to bring about all sorts of controversial ideas and discussions. I was surprised that they are approaching such subject matter, and I'm more than a little interested.

Some things are better left dead in the past:

For myself, I was more than pleased with the homage paid to General "Stonewall" Jackson in Turner's "Gods and Generals". Like him, I should have like to believe that the South would have been compelled to end slavery out of Christian dignity rather than continue to enslave their brothers of the freedom that belong equally to all men. Obviously it didn't happen that way.

Would I fight for a South that believed in Slavery today? I have to ask first, would I know any better back then? I don't know. I honestly don't know. My pride for my South and my heritage would have most likely doomed me as it did so many others. I won't skirt the issue, in all likelyhood, slavery may have been an afterthought. Had they been the staple of what I considered property, I possibly would have already been past the point of moral struggle on the point and preparing to kill Northern invaders.

Compelling story or KKK wet dream?:

So what do I feel about this? The photo above nearly brings me to tears, as I highly respect Abraham Lincoln. I don't care if they kick me out of the South. Imagine if GW was in prayer over what to do about a seperatist leftist California. That's how I imagine Lincoln. A great man. I wonder sometimes what my family would have been like today. How many more of us would there be? Would we have held onto the property and prosperity that sustained them before the war? Would I have double the amount of family in the area? How many would I have had to cook for last week for Christmas? Would I have needed to make more "Pate De Fois Gras"?

Well, dunno about that either. Depending on what the previous for this movie are like, I may or may not see it. If they portray it as the United Confederacy of the KKK I won't be attending.

This generation of our clan speaks some 5 languages in addition to English, those being of recent immigrants to this nation. All of them are good Americans. I believe the south would have succombed to the same forces that affected the North. Immigration, war, economics and other huma forces that have changed the map of the world since history began.

Whatever. At least in this alternate universe, it's safe for me to believe that we would have grown to be the benevolent and humane South that I know it is in my heart. I can believe that slavery would have died shortly before or after that lost victory. I can believe that Southern gentlemen would have served the world as the model for behavior. In my alternate universe, it's ok that Spock has a beard. It's my alternate universe after all, it can be what I want.

At any rate, I lived up North for many years. Wonderful people and difficult people. I will always sing their praises as a land full of beautiful Italian girls, maple syrup and Birch beer. My uncle ribbed us once before we left on how we were going up North to live "with all the Yankees". Afterwards I always refered to him as royalty. He is, really. He's "King of the Rednecks". I suppose I'm his court jester.

So what do you think of this movie?

Since no comments about Bush [pro or con] have been made on this thread, he must be referring to comments made somewhere else.

#15 DixieChick2000 tagline: 'President Bush is a mensch in cowboy boots'.
#76 Bulldawg28: 'And yet libs cite Bush and Republicans as the divisive ones'.
#77 NewLand tagline: 'I'm a Generation Jones'er and WE elected President Bush!'
#80 NewLand tagline: 'I'm a Generation Jones'er and WE elected President Bush!'
#100 DixieChick2000 tagline: 'President Bush is a mensch in cowboy boots'. I'll skip taglines.
#175 Non sequitur: 'SInce they decided to name the next one after Bush senior you know that it's only a matter of time before the next Democrat senator names one after Clinton'.

#296 GOPCapitalist: 'Why don't you ask President Bush? I'm sure he'd give you lots of reasons for the war he started in Iraq, and most of them would probably be very convincing.'

The least you could do is check THIS thread before lying.

The fact that the President listens to The Knack should be good for a few points in the next polls. But I'm sure that throughout the country, legions of journalists are busy trying to find out if Bush downloads from file sharing websites.

I thought about adding the word 'liberal' before journalists, then realized that you'd already extracted the redundancy. From what I remember, his playlist was not offensive - the analyst basically said that it was representative of someone who stopped listening to pop music sometime during the 80's. When he said it, my wife let out a, "Hey, HEY, HEY!!! Watch it there, bud!"

Are you kidding me? GOP would strangle if you cut off his insults.

When the war in Texas comes up, he's put together some real gems. Not so with the twit-filtered... ever.

Apologies, courtesy bump.

Also mention that if you've been on any of the non ACW related economics threads, he puts up a good defense of free-market and anti-interventionist policy.

Had the south had the patience or the inclination to fight a defensive war and wait Lincoln out then they wouldn't have fired on Sumter.

Just to figure out a backdrop to that, do you accept as legitimate the armistice brokered by Buchanan?

Don't you oftentimes "cherish" the juice squished from a violet onto a love letter?

Watch for it: "Speed was a liar. Sandburg was a kook. Everyone is a fraud, 'cept me!"

Some folks are just born followers and believe that all politicians are honest and have the people's best interests at heart.

The rest of us are just too busy, and too frustrated to educate them all.

Let us know how that goes.

nolu chan, of course, never posted from the Speed diaries that I can recall. Speed's letters, Lincoln's letters to Speed, Sandburg, etc. Firsthand accounts abound, there's no need to fabricate.

"nolu chan, of course, never posted from the Speed diaries that I can recall."

N-S: Apparently, the rehabilitation of nolu chan is beginning. Look for heroic statues soon.

Nolu quoted as much as he could get ahold of - all of it from ACT-UP gay activist Larry Kramer, nolu's mentor for Lincoln history.

The diaries were a hoax! They never existed, except as made-up fragments. But nolu swallowed them hook, line, and sinker.

Somebody get me a hook remover for these other "southern" boys!

"Nonsense - your 'spin' machine is working overtime."

First mention of the "Speed Diaries" showed up at FR in 1999 - a year before I was signed up.

YOU suggested that you and nolu posted fraudulent Speed Diary in response to my alleged posts pertaining to Jefferson Davis's "dress." That is a fabrication, or you are mistaken.

I have never posted that Davis was caught in a dress. I have posted refutations to that. So did you and nolu knowingly post fraudulent information, or were you taken in by the gay lobby, or did you make the whole response story up?

nolu was posting about the Speed Diaries are late as October 2004.

Something that the Union strategy made impossible. By very early in 1862 the south was almost completely cut in half. With but one or two exceptions there was no place where the south could cross the Mississippi and link up with rail lines. By mid-1863 that was gone.

Well, you've outlined the problem in the West. As history saw, the Confederate government didn't come up with a solution for it -- didn't even try hard, until Chickamauga, to effect some check to the Union's progress.

And as I said, significant resources sat idle in Texas, protecting rice and sugar-cane fields.

Yes, thanx for the link. I had wondered where Buckley had picked up the doctrine of "subsidiarity" -- it seemed such an orphan in Western liberal thinking.

I hadn't realized it was centuries old, and very Catholic -- like the concept of "just war".

Hmmmm.....I put two bozos on twit filter, and you instantly pop up out of nowhere.

Now, which one are you?

Go away, troll. Come back when you have a reference, someone who will guarantee that you aren't capitan_refugio or M. Espinola in alternative dress.

As for your post......I might have spoken to it, if you hadn't put up such an obvious bagatelle.

Bye.

Everyone knows who your normal target for abuse happens to be. The former, murdered President of the Civil War period, remember the one you always dehumanize with extreme zealotry from here to Timbuktu.

Amen!
