What's wrong about this photo? Or if you're a true-born Southerner, what's right?
While scanning through some of the up and coming movies in 2005, I ran across this intriguing title; "CSA: Confederate States of America (2005)". It's an "alternate universe" take on what would the country be like had the South won the civil war.
Stars with bars:
Suffice to say anything from Hollywood on this topic is sure to to bring about all sorts of controversial ideas and discussions. I was surprised that they are approaching such subject matter, and I'm more than a little interested.
Some things are better left dead in the past:
For myself, I was more than pleased with the homage paid to General "Stonewall" Jackson in Turner's "Gods and Generals". Like him, I should have like to believe that the South would have been compelled to end slavery out of Christian dignity rather than continue to enslave their brothers of the freedom that belong equally to all men. Obviously it didn't happen that way.
Would I fight for a South that believed in Slavery today? I have to ask first, would I know any better back then? I don't know. I honestly don't know. My pride for my South and my heritage would have most likely doomed me as it did so many others. I won't skirt the issue, in all likelyhood, slavery may have been an afterthought. Had they been the staple of what I considered property, I possibly would have already been past the point of moral struggle on the point and preparing to kill Northern invaders.
Compelling story or KKK wet dream?:
So what do I feel about this? The photo above nearly brings me to tears, as I highly respect Abraham Lincoln. I don't care if they kick me out of the South. Imagine if GW was in prayer over what to do about a seperatist leftist California. That's how I imagine Lincoln. A great man. I wonder sometimes what my family would have been like today. How many more of us would there be? Would we have held onto the property and prosperity that sustained them before the war? Would I have double the amount of family in the area? How many would I have had to cook for last week for Christmas? Would I have needed to make more "Pate De Fois Gras"?
Well, dunno about that either. Depending on what the previous for this movie are like, I may or may not see it. If they portray it as the United Confederacy of the KKK I won't be attending.
This generation of our clan speaks some 5 languages in addition to English, those being of recent immigrants to this nation. All of them are good Americans. I believe the south would have succombed to the same forces that affected the North. Immigration, war, economics and other huma forces that have changed the map of the world since history began.
Whatever. At least in this alternate universe, it's safe for me to believe that we would have grown to be the benevolent and humane South that I know it is in my heart. I can believe that slavery would have died shortly before or after that lost victory. I can believe that Southern gentlemen would have served the world as the model for behavior. In my alternate universe, it's ok that Spock has a beard. It's my alternate universe after all, it can be what I want.
At any rate, I lived up North for many years. Wonderful people and difficult people. I will always sing their praises as a land full of beautiful Italian girls, maple syrup and Birch beer. My uncle ribbed us once before we left on how we were going up North to live "with all the Yankees". Afterwards I always refered to him as royalty. He is, really. He's "King of the Rednecks". I suppose I'm his court jester.
So what do you think of this movie?

i'm reminded of the exchange between a yankee general & COL Mosby:
voice from the darkness: MOSBY!
general: you've caught him??
Mosby: NO, he has caught YOU.

just one of the TENS of THOUSANDS of damnyankee WAR CRIMES was what was done to MY family by the damnyankee cavalry:
at least 92 elderly (& UNARMED) men, women & young children, who were robbed, raped, assaulted, tortured & finally MURDERED in cold-blood, just because they were NOT WHITE people. NOTHING WAS DONE by the US Army Provost Marshal. NOTHING.
if you happened to be Asian,Black,Indian,Jewish,Latino,a helpless CSA POW, Roman Catholic or one of "the poorest of the poor whites" you were a PRIME TARGET for damnyankee WAR CRIMES and/or CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY! (the damnyankee army was REALLY GOOD at killing those who couldn't shoot back.)

Cap'n Crunch seems yet again to have forgotten the directions sent to him after the incident preceding his exile. I also have no doubt there's a "story" to it all, but that "story" will also resemble the "story" of the faked court opinions in Hamdi, the Prize Cases, Lemmon et al and the "story" of how the union army won the battle of Fort Davis in 1862.
The real factual chain of events is, of course, much different from what the chronic liar purports. Oddly enough, any telling of it around here tends to invoke a certain participant into pounding the abuse button and getting the thread pulled to hide the dirty laundry that comes out.
How was it a coup? Harris was the elected governor of the state! If anything, the eastern unionist insurgents were the ones operating outside the laws of Tennessee.
In the larger portions of Middle and West Tennessee, no speeches or discussions in favor of the Union were permitted. Union papers were not allowed to circulate
And where is the SPECIFIC evidence of all this? One history of the war I quoted earlier on this thread stated that confederate authorities only closed down ONE SINGLE NEWSPAPER during the entire civil war (a paper in Knoxville).
The unanimity of the votes in many large counties, where, but a few weeks ago, the Union sentiment was so strong, proves beyond a doubt that Union men were overawed by the tyranny of the military law, and the still greater tyranny of a corrupt and subsidized press.
Mary Frances Berry might have said the exact same thing. There are two major flaws with this argument though. First, it wasn't "but a few weeks ago" that they voted against a secession convention, but rather several months and an intervening war. Second, if all these unionists were so much "overawed" by "military law" that they couldn't vote, then why was turnout HIGHER in June?
For example in February Rutherford County rejected the convention by a vote of 1,539 to 1,003. In the June election the vote was 2,392 to 73 for secession!
And you're surprised at this? Think about what happened in between February and June for a moment. To pretend that the war that broke out in April would not have profound polarizing effects on popular opinion in the ensuing weeks and months is about is credible as pretending that 9/11 didn't do the same to popular opinion in the weeks and months immediately following it! Unless you've got real, specific, and documented proof that "unionists" were intimidated away from the polls or that the June vote with higher turnout was somehow rigged, spare us these Jesse Jackson claims of "voter intimidation" as they have no place in historical discourse.
As the other poster indicated by way of analogy, Jeb was committing a sin of omission by failing to intervene and claiming to have exhausted his options in respect for the decrees of Judge Greer, even if they were wrong. Whatever one thinks of Jeb Bush, the analogy never intended to equate Schaivo with Jesus as was originally misrepresented and as garbage_truck continues to misrepresent today. Furthermore, the comparison of a sin of omission is sound in act, even if not in degree. It's also a likely political reality that Jeb's inaction will cost him among the pro-life base should he seek another office.
Of course knowing what we do about garbage_truck's own political beliefs, his real gripe is very likely with the fact that pro-lifers impeded the killing of Terri Schaivo for as long as they did. He did, after all, oppose the impeachment of Bill Clinton and declare that the communist party was a "legitimate political organization," so it's not at all unreasonable to expect that garbage_truck also sides with the merchants of death occupying the Michael Schiavo household and a certain Florida courtroom.
Wlat's Wrods of Wsidom II: The Apprentice Speaks
"The perjury count against Clinton was for lying about adultery in a deposition during a civil lawsuit that stemmed from an incident that occurred before he was elected President. This misconduct did not flow from his holding the office of President of the United States, in fact one could argue that the civil suit for sexual harassment was brought against him only because he was POTUS." - mac_truck, 7/14/03

"It should become quite clear to someone who is even mildly objective, that were some serious constitutional questions about whether Clinton's crimes should be considered 'high' or 'petit'. I would further argue that recent events involving the plaintiff in that case make the 'petitness' of the misconduct even more apparent." - mac_truck, 7/14/03

..only damnyankees/HATERS/morons/kool aide drinkers feel that way.
Get a hold of yourself & stop being an old duffer.
What's with the gigantic type? Knock it off, and go play your hippy-redneck-drug music.
Indeed I do, at least on your side of the fence. How else could you continuously miss so many facts in virtually every conversation you enter?

Thanks but no thanks. Unlike the bandwidth theivery you commit on a daily basis, simply increasing the font size by one unit for a single post is neither illegal nor an abuse of all reasonable posting protocol (as well as common netiquette). As to my music, I play it on my own terms and time without any need for your direction or approval. Seeing as it also exceeds in quality the new age time life infomercial bargain bin garbage you seem to prefer, I have little reason to assign any value or credibility to your musical recommendations. In short, you simply lack taste.
Excuse me, I thought Pontius Pilate was the man who washed his hands -- the Sanhedrin crying out, "His blood be upon us and our children!" Consulting the original text, Sanctum Jesu Christi Evangelium Secundum Matthaeum,
27:20 Principes autem sacerdotum et seniores persuaserunt populis ut peterent Barabbam, Iesum vero perderent. Respondens autem praeses ait illis: Quem vultis vobis de duobus dimitti? At illi dixerunt: Barabbam. Dicit illis Pilatus: Quid igitur faciam de Iesu, qui dicitur Christus. Dicunt omnes: Crucifigatur. Ait illis praeses: Quid enim mali fecit? At illi magis clamabant dicentes: Crucifigatur.
There's your authoritative text, right there, which you ought to consult before making rash attributions of responsibility. Pilate handed Jesus over to the priest-led mob, who decided his fate.
Oh, I didn't know that Garbage_truck was a Clinton defender. I was aware of that in Wlat's case. Interesting.
Sin of omission bump.......seems that the Clinton defenders' sin was of a similar kind, if not the same order of gravity, as Pilate's washing of the hands. Claiming that the high crimes and misdemeanors were, in Arlen Specter's very learned usage, "not proven", is rather akin to washing one's hands in a case in which one is burdened with better knowledge.
Or, in Pilate's case, at least a warning from his wife.
Yes, I think we'd probably do better to get the full story from JimRob; something tells me that anything we get from Gloat_Boy will be of the order of those Hamdi footnotes. And I really don't feel like being polite to him -- given his own deportment in the threads.
"...new age time life infomercial bargain bin garbage you seem to prefer, I have little reason to assign any value or credibility to your musical recommendations. In short, you simply lack taste." (This coming from someone who displays redneck-hippie crapola.)
More unsubstantiated gibberish considering I never said one word either way. Nobody except you & the other nut, even care.
Only a few more KIA remaining.
It doesn't take a Judge Greer to point out that you're a bandwidth theft...unless of course you are calling the admin moderators and all the other people who have cited you for it Judge Greers.
More unsubstantiated gibberish considering I never said one word either way.
Nah, just a little speculation at your expense. Of course you could easily end it by clarifying your musical perspectives rather than simply trashing those of other people. It says a lot about the type of person you are that you cannot even enter a conversation about what kind of music people like without oozing out your bilious contents all over the thread (in addition, of course, to the bandwidth you ripped off from other people)
Heck, it already is on the order of the Hamdi footnotes! Remember - the "exile" wasn't really an "exile" at all! It was all "business" and just happened out of extreme coincidence to occur at the exact moment the mods let it known that cyberstalking was not to be tolerated!
