Please post your replies to bad company

Four years ago My wife and I had a house fire. Lost in the fire were our two dogs Festus and Genevieve. Unable to stand the thought of a peaceful house I went out and got a skinny little bird dog from the pound. An English pointer. Scared of her own shadow. My wife also found a beautiful akita. The first time we introduced the two puppies they were terrified of each other. Both ran in the opposite direction.

Weird sometimes too. When she has to go out she has to "pee-pee" dance in a circle around something, even if that something is you.

Josephine, turned out to be a munificent Bird Dog. Her first hunt we went to Illinois to a "kick and shoot" hunt. Guys with 2000$ bird dogs came up empty. Josephine flushed us four birds that day. (The Brother in law had a good excuse for missing the fourth)

Hunting over your own bird dog is like nothing else in the world. It's as if they invite you into a world only they have access to. I know josephine did it because she absolutely adored me.

We left her in the kennel once when my wife's father passed away. For three days she didn't sleep or eat. Every night when I'd come home after the dogs would settle down, she would perch herself on the end of the couch about 20 feet away and just watch me as I post and read FRee Republic. Even at four years old she would stealthily try to crawl up in my lap on to of my keyboard (all 30 pounds of her) Hoping I guess that if she did it slow enough I wouldn't notice.

About four weeks ago we noticed that she looked a little fat. My wife spoils the dogs. From Graham crackers to acanthus dogs eat well. A few days later she went off her food. Her belly went down a little, but we still didn't think any thing of it.

Her belly grew again and she went off her food again about a week later. I thought she was pregnant. We took her to the vet. Worms were suspected.

The belly continued to grow. on the second trip we were told It was a tumor. The vet here in town sent us to a specialist in Kansas City. We spent too much on Christmas so without hesitation I sold off a couple of guns to pay for the ultrasound and further tests.

The prognosis was poor. This was New Years Eve. Surgery wasn't even an option because the mass in her belly was so big it was pushing on all her organs and making it difficult for her to breathe.

Sunday night she went off her food again. She tried to eat to please me, but she couldn't take in more than a few nibbles.

Monday afternoon as I prepared for work she came over as I checked my messages on FRee Republic before I went to work Josephine came over to, ostensibly, get me to let her out. She only got just to me when she lost control and wet the carpet. As I wept, she hung her head in shame, and slunk off to the bedroom, afraid of the scolding that never came.

As I prepared to leave the house, I kissed her, told her I love her and it was OJ if she had to go. She thumped her tail and I left.

At 10:00 Monday night the most beautiful dog in the world left me.

Someone else said it, but I'll say it again; "If dogs don't go to heaven I want to go where the dogs are."

By the time I got to the end of the story I was sobbing. I lost my Woofie in 1996 in virtually the same way. I still miss her. I know we were lucky to have such a friend, but it does hurt so.

We had a shepherd/coyote mix that held just such a special place in our hearts. Gone 11 years now.
