The mosques, Islamic schools, etc., aren't so much border control problems. A lot of the muslims extremists will live here a long time, become citizens, while they are making plans to take over by getting elected into positions in government.

Oh yeh! So lets just keep those borders open, as millions, from God knows where, pour into our cities and home towns.

Good thinking!

Maybe, but the American people don't deserve a Kerry administration.

Amen to that. Preach it!

Ah yes. Another ever so-reasonable post. But could it be that it subtly conceals the real goal, demoralization of the Bush teams? This is a scripted Kerry talking point. In a previous life, I used to deal with this type of stuff--we called it disinformation.

Screw Bob Schieffer. I fully expect he'll show his blatant bias by launching questions loaded with buckshot toward Bush, while kissing Kerry's lily white elitist a$$.

The thing you're forgetting here is that there is no practical way to seal our borders against the most dangerous well-financed terrorists. If you seal the land borders, they'll fly in by plane or helicopter. If you search ever plane entering the country, they'll come in by boat from Mexico, Canada, or the Bahamas. If you search every boat tying up at a dock or harbor, they'll go to a remote area and just beach the boat and leave it. By this point you've also tied up hundreds of thousands of police and soldiers who would have been much more effective on the offensive outside our borders. This is why our anti-terror strategy must and does rely on going on the offensive against known terrorist groups outside our borders.

This has been my biggest fear: If something of the sort results in an attack, especially a Beslan-style atrocity, it will cost Bush the election.

Yeah, never mind the fact the Republicans have been in charge for years, and our borders now resemble a Boston marathon of millions, an endless conga-line who knows what, pouring across our borders.

Don't worry folks.

By 2014, in ten short years, there will be 45 million illegals in our country. By that time, our elections will have been completely undermined by fraud.

We'd have to create the biggest government program in history to even approach shutting it down.

We already have that program. It's called the United States Armed Forces.

Yet, even as open as it is, we have somehow managed to survive since 9/11 without a single terrorist incident hitting this country.

The 9-11 agents plotted for at least five years. They are patient, unlike the open borders instant profit dorks.

There aren't enough troops in ANY army to secure our border.

Defeatist bunk.

Security lines do not trace the border but straighten it via wise use of terrain. Have you ever seen how much open ground even a small detachment can cover in an economy of force mission?

Have you seen how cheap some of the Chinese UAVs are? Do you know that no defense is perfect? Do you really think we have no option but just accept thousands of illegal immigrants per day?

Yes, drug smugglers get boats through sometimes but they often resort to a small space on a legitimate carrier due to the difficulty of getting a drug boat through. Do you think that no boat should be checked out because some boats make it to a drop off? Terrorists could use a boat to get a nuclear weapon close to the coast but the ship could be intercepted. They would more likely have the bomb disguised and stored in a container in a normal legal ship. But intel can catch this too (with a bit of luck).

But your solution is to not even attempt to defend against terrorists or massive immigration?

I am really hoping DU doesn't have a FReeper Funnies thread. There are so many people saying crazy, hateful things on this thread it's reading like "their" site. I've gleaned so far that we have an awful lot of land, air and sea to patrol and not a whole lot of manpower or equipment or bipartisan cooperation to do it with. I've learned that an angry, scared FReeper sounds a great deal like an angry, scared DUmmie. Finally, if a ball has been dropped, it's a bipartisan ball, we haven't had a REAL push for our security since President Reagan's Star-Wars project. Short of lining up on every border and shore with white civil defense helmets and high-powered hunting rifles, what should we ACTUALLY do about this?

The United States Armed Forces are not now and NEVER HAVE been big enough to seal our borders. That isn't defeatist bunk. It is reality. As I said, not even the largest armies in the world can seal their borders. That includes China, India, North Korea and the old Soviet Union. We have 22,000 miles of border. Unless you want to put every able bodied person in America into the border patrol, it ain't going to happen.
