Let the debates begin.
Former Presidential hopeful Dr. Alan Keyes has told Illinois Republicans that he would accept their request to take on Democrat Barack Obama in the US Senate race.
Members of the Republican State Central Committee insisted that the former radio and television commentator make the promise to run before they would give him the nod Wednesday night, sources told the Chicago Sun Times on Thursday.
The Republicans were leery of voting to give Keyes the nomination without some guarantees.
So he went back into the room and bascially said, 'If you offer, than I will accept.'
Another GOP source said that Keyes had agreed to accept the nomination but told the committee that he wanted to wait until he could publicly announce it at a 'campaign style' rally on Sunday.
'He told them that he would do it,' the source said. 'he just wanted to take a few days to put things together and make his announcement.'

That is fantastic news. He will be a top notch candidate.
Speaker Hastert already said he would do fundraisers for Ambassador Keyes..
Prayers for Alan Keyes! There needs to be a change in Illinois now!
FANtastic !
This is pretty obvious and expected. You don't make an offer like this public. You extend it privately and if the person turn it down, then you can go on to the next person without that person being publicly perceived as your 2nd choice.
If you make the offer public, that is because the person has indicated he/she will accept.
Bingo
All right!
Chicago retail politics is a lot like making sausage, we probably wouldn't have wanted to see that meeting live Wednesday night on C-SPAN..
Either you're with Keyes, or you're with Obama and the terrorists :-)
I don't want to be a spoil sport, but I don't think anyone in the party thinks Keyes can win. He will draw media attention to the race and be a good spokesman for the conservative movement. It's a "national" move.
I know that Keyes is not from Ill. is Barack Obama?
If Obama is a "home-boy", then Keyes will be an outsider or reverse carpet bagger.
BTW - Don't misunderstand me. I think Keyes is tops. I was priveleged to hear him address the Oklahoma Republican convention over a decade ago. Dynamic speaker and a rock ribbed conservative. I just don't want Republicans looking foolish or desparate. Also, I don't want Keyes tarnished.
That may very well be true, and frankly, I don't mind anymore. Regardless of the carpetbagger charges, I still think the debates are going to be very fun to watch.
Obama, born in Hawaii, was raised in Hawaii and Indonesia, and went to school in New York.
Thank you Ambassador Keyes !
He's got a better chance than that Democrat-supporting woman the IL GOP was considering. At least this gives them a chance.
Great news. Thank you Alan Keys for being willing to put your shoulder to the wheel. You will do us proud. God bless you, and prayers for your success.
Keyes will be carpetbagging. He denounced Hillary for doing the same like we all did, but this is a special case due to Ryan's collapse. I wonder why we don't get to go digging around in candidate Kerry's divorce records.
I envy the voters of Illinois. We have Feinstein and Boxer in California. Boxer has got to be the luckiest person around, because Bill Jones doesn't have a snowball's chance of winning this race.
