Catholic Church equates anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism
Haaretz Correspondent
The Catholic Church condemned anti-Zionism as a cover for anti-Semitism by means of a joint statement issued by a forum of Catholic-Jewish intellectuals this week.
The announcement was made at a gathering of religious, academic and other leading Jewish and Catholic figures in Buenos Aires.
"We oppose anti-Semitism in any way and form, including anti-Zionism that has become of late a manifestation of anti-Semitism," the statement said.
This is the first time that anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism have been equated by the Catholic Church.
The statement also includes a stern condemnation of terrorism, particularly terror in the name of faith.
"Terror is a sin against man and against God. Fundamentalist terrorism in the name of God has no justification and cannot be justified."
Ilan Steinberg, director of the World Jewish Congress, one of the forum's organizers, described the joint statement as "an historic moment."
"For the first time, the Catholic Church recognizes in anti-Zionism an attack not only against Jews, but against the whole Jewish people."
Senior Jewish figures called the announcement a significant, public statement of support by the Catholic Church in the face of anti-Zionism.
"In the past, Zionism was equated with racism, and this statement turns anti-Zionism statements to a form of racism," a Jewish leader said in New York.
The statement joins a prior European Union announcement and UN declaration of war against anti-Semitism as part of a global front fighting the scourge.
Wrong board Francisco..

Thanks for the background on the organization.
There's four of them now? :>)
Neturei Karta, a group of nutballs rejected by every other religious Jewish organization on the planet
""" There's four of them now? :>) """
They numbered as many as 12..
Ironically 6 were killed by two suicide bombers ..
leaving 6.. but the Two suicide bombers, it turns out, were also members
4 :^)
Satmar Hasidim have condemned the "Neturei Karta" as enemies of the Jewish people regardless of their opinions of secular Zionist ideology.
Are you saying it would upset or anger you if it did?
"...it is our obligation to make it known in order that everyone should understand that the Zionists are not the nation of Israel...and it most definitely our holy obligation to announce before those nations of the world that the Zionists are not the spokespeople of the nation of Israel...it is a mitzvah (good deed) obligatory for each individual and group to protest and to proclaim with whichever means possible and to do everything within ones capability for the honor of the Lord which has been desecrated by the Zionists and one must protest at every occasion and at all times and at every place..."
(Kuntres Dibros Kodesh)
"...and it is our duty to reveal our belief with publicity and in public that every Jew who trembles before the Lord and believes in G-d blessed be He, does not desire their jurisdiction of their "State" and its' entire existence is opposition to our Holy Torah and it is an attempt at revoking the yoke of G-d's rule.."
(Al Ha'Geula V'Al Ha'Temura, addendum p.193)
"We see from letters written by great rabbis in the early days of Zionism how great was their deathly fear of the consequences of the slander and libel of the Zionists; unfortunately their fears were realized.
"In addition to this, facts have come to light regarding the extent of the cruelties committed by Zionist organizations that resulted in the whole dreadful catastrophe. Some of these activities that took place in Hungary came to light as well in court cases that later occurred in the Holy Land. The Zionists undertook a number of explicit actions that they believed would assist them in meeting their objectives in the creation a state. It is not, however, my intention to discuss this subject at length in this book because I am writing it solely for the purpose of clarifying Jewish law as it pertains to the establishment of a state. However, I mention these events to point out the fact that it is only this abominable idea of establishing a state that has caused all the hardships, sufferings and misfortunes that have befallen us, aside from the fact of countless Jews who have died because of the Zionist wars that are forbidden by Jewish law."

Catholics and Jews Seeking to Promote Justice and Charity
BUENOS AIRES, JULY 7, 2004 (Zenit.org).- The International Meeting of the Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee on its first day focused on the search for common commitments to promote justice and charity.
Among the speakers was Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, who reiterated that the Second Vatican Council's declaration Nostra Aetate is a "solid pillar" on which to base Catholic-Jewish relations.
The cardinal also called for "a joint action in favor of moral values that, as faith communities, we share."
"We do not come together as politicians, military men, or businessmen, but meet as faith communities," he said. "As companions we are linked to one another for the good, for 'shalom,' for the peace of humanity."
There were about 30 representatives from the Jewish community, headed by Israel Singer, head of the International Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee.
Calling the meeting "a great challenge," Singer said there is a "great need to help Jews and Catholics find common cause, that is, to work for justice and charity." The meeting ends Thursday.
Catholic Ping - let me know if you want on/off this list
1. As for the Article, theonly people warning Jews in the1930's toleave or resist the Nazis were Zionists, especially revisionist Zionists.
2. Zionists have never been united. There were Religious, Socialist, nationalist, and liberal Zionists.
Well, the headline for the article says Catholic Church equates anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism."This article is from Ha'aretz, and there isn't a single "Catholic intellectual" included as a source for the statement. There is nothing in the article to suggest that the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church had anything to do with this statement."What is your point? That we can trust what Catholics have to say but not Jews?
Ordinarily when you want to know what the Catholic Church says, you ask the Catholic Church. It isnt a matter of trusting or not trusting Jews, its just that they dont define what the Catholic Church says. Catholics are rather used to their Church being misquoted in the press. Most of us here on FR dont trust any news report unless we can also find and read the document from the Church. Fact is, the press is nearly always wrong.
To the extent that there is a class of persons we don't trust (though I can't speak for Alberta) it would be the press.
But you're right about one thing: there's not a damn thing the Catholic Church might say that would impinge in any way, on the deep-rooted anti-Semitic feelings held by millions of Roman Catholics, even today after all that has happened. You are as bigoted as those you condemn. I seriously doubt you have even half a basis for that. The most anti-Semitic Catholics are those who have rejected the Church, either to the left of the right. Mainstream Catholicism is hardly anti-Semitic. Likewise, mainstream Catholics arent anti-semitic either.

From Haaretz on July 4, 2004:
Scholars, religious leaders to hold Jewish-Catholic panel on anti-Semitism
By Shlomo Shamir
Catholic and Jewish scholars will try to enlist the Catholic Church to an open fight against anti-Semitism in a dialogue that opens in Buenos Aires tomorrow. It is the first time that the dialogue, held by delegates representing the two religions every three years, will take place in a South American country that is a bastion of the Catholic Church.
Each delegation has 25 members, including senior religious figures, scholars and experts on Vatican and Jewish relations. The Catholic side is headed by Cardinal Walter Casper, commissioner for the Church's relations with the Jews, and has 10 other cardinals from the United States and other countries. The Jewish delegation consists of rabbis and representatives of large American Jewish Organizations and six Israeli delegates including Minister Nathan Sharansky and Rabbi Sh'ear Yashuv Cohen, formerly Haifa chief rabbi. The rabbis represent the three religious streams in American Jewry.
Entitled "Justice and Charity," the dialogue will last until Thursday and was initially planned to deal with formulating a joint plan for both religions to alleviate poverty caused by the economic crisis in Argentina. However, following the incidents of anti-Semitism in Europe, both sides agreed to hold a serious debate on anti-Semitism and formulate a way to make the Catholic Church part of the struggle against it.
"The dialogue in Buenos Aires is part of a global effort against anti-Semitism," said Ilan Steinberg, director of the World Jewish Congress on Friday. "The dialogue will be a sequel to the conference on anti-Semitism organized by the European Commission in Brussels, to the declaration against anti-Semitism made at the world conference in Berlin, and to the seminar against anti-Semitism in the UN two weeks ago."
The dialogue is being held as the Jewish community in Buenos Aires prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of the terror attack that wrecked the building of the Jewish community offices in the city.
From the Vatican website:
MEETING IN ARGENTINA OF THE JEWISH-CATHOLIC COMMITTEE
VATICAN CITY, JUL 5, 2004 (VIS) - The 18th meeting of the International Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee, organized by the Holy See Commission for Religious Relations with Jews and the International Jewish Committee on Inter- religious Consultations (IJCIC), will take place from July 5 to 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Catholic and Jewish experts from Europe, Israel, the United States and Latin America will participate in the meeting.
The theme of the meeting is: "Zedeq and Zedaqah (Justice and Charity). Facing the Challenges of the Future: Jewish-Catholic Relations in the 21st Century."
According to a communique published today, the Holy See is represented by Cardinal Walter Kasper, Bishop Brian Farrell, and Fr. Norbert Hofmann, respectively president, vice president and secretary of the Commission for the Religious Relations with Jews, together with Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia and Archbishop Michael Louis Fitzgerald, president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe the International Catholic Jewish Liaison Committee is the official point of contact between the Vatican and the worldwide Jewish community, created as a result of Nostra Aetate's call for dialog between Catholics and the Jewish Community.
It would seem to me to be not only a legitimate forum, but the place where discussions such as this should be taking place.
It would appear the sources cited here are credible as representing both the Jewish and Catholic communities, with the exception of Francisco's, of course.
NEW YORK, March 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- "The aggression by the Israeli Government will only increase anti-Semitism and worsen the current situation," said Rabbi Weiss, spokesman for True Torah Jews.
Ariel Sharon, the Prime Minister of Israel told the crowd at a Rome hotel, "We are witness to a great wave of anti-Semitism, and apart from the usual anti-Semitism against Jews, there is today the added hate of the collective Jew, which is Israel." ... "The best solution to anti-Semitism is immigration to Israel. It is the only place on Earth where Jews can live as Jews," he said. (BBC Web site of Monday, 17 November, 2003 ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3275979.stm )
Sharon has moved from the planning stages as stated in November, 2003, to the execution of the plan which has been in development since the days of Herzl, the founder of the Zionist movement, who stated in his diary "It is essential that the sufferings of Jews ... become worse ... this will assist in realization of our plans ... I have an excellent idea ... I shall induce anti-Semites to liquidate Jewish wealth ... The anti- Semites will assist us thereby in that they will strengthen the persecution and oppression of Jews. The anti-Semites shall be our best friends." (From his Diary, Part I, pp. 16)
In executing this plan they have successfully escalated anti- Semitism throughout the world, Weiss said.
There is great pain that the press and politicians are calling the actions of the Zionist movement 'Jewish actions.' With these words they are helping the Zionists to fulfill their dreams, Weiss said.
We call upon the world again to understand that the state of 'Israel' does not represent the Jewish faith and traditions and that Zionists are the greatest enemies to the Jewish people, said Rabbi Weiss.
We appeal to people of good will in the media itself to open their minds and hearts to what we are proclaiming about the truth of Judaism, which has been distorted by the Zionists, Weiss said.
Where I am coming from Freddie, is the more liberal point of view that radical Zionists are an abomination. I don't care if there are two or two thousand. They make too much noise and encourage antil-Semitism.
That is correct. According to their web site,
"Underlying all of Sidic-Roma's work is the call of the Church to understand and esteem the Jewish people as it understands itself, and to deepen Christian faith through the study of the faith of the Jewish people, whom Pope John Paul II referred to as "our elder brothers."
SIDIC International Jewish-Christian Documentation Service
You are way out of line with that stupid remark which bears no resemblance to the truth.
Radical Zionist of the Kahane breed are an abomination and some of the local poobahs of the ADL have demonstrated disgusting racism.
There are good animals and bad animals. There are good humans and bad humans. There are good Christians and bad Christians. There are good Catholics and bad Catholics. There are good Jews and there are bad Jews. There are good Muslims and there are bad Muslims.
That' s life.
If you and your nasty little crowd want to yell about anti-Semitism and you are incapable of admitting that some Jews are thugs then you are a racist bigot. No big problem understanding that.
Asserting that I am a thug because I don't accept your politics is bigotry. Ignorant and and an insult to all peaceful Jews and Israel.
