Catholic Church equates anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism

The Catholic Church condemned anti-Zionism as a cover for anti-Semitism by means of a joint statement issued by a forum of Catholic-Jewish intellectuals this week.
The announcement was made at a gathering of religious, academic and other leading Jewish and Catholic figures in Buenos Aires.
"We oppose anti-Semitism in any way and form, including anti-Zionism that has become of late a manifestation of anti-Semitism," the statement said.
This is the first time that anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism have been equated by the Catholic Church.
The statement also includes a stern condemnation of terrorism, particularly terror in the name of faith.
"Terror is a sin against man and against God. Fundamentalist terrorism in the name of God has no justification and cannot be justified."
Ilan Steinberg, director of the World Jewish Congress, one of the forum's organizers, described the joint statement as "an historic moment."
"For the first time, the Catholic Church recognizes in anti-Zionism an attack not only against Jews, but against the whole Jewish people."
Senior Jewish figures called the announcement a significant, public statement of support by the Catholic Church in the face of anti-Zionism.
"In the past, Zionism was equated with racism, and this statement turns anti-Zionism statements to a form of racism," a Jewish leader said in New York.
The statement joins a prior European Union announcement and UN declaration of war against anti-Semitism as part of a global front fighting the scourge.

Catholics and Jews Seeking to Promote Justice and Charity
BUENOS AIRES, JULY 7, 2004 (Zenit.org).- The International Meeting of the Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee on its first day focused on the search for common commitments to promote justice and charity.
Among the speakers was Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, who reiterated that the Second Vatican Council's declaration Nostra Aetate is a "solid pillar" on which to base Catholic-Jewish relations.
The cardinal also called for "a joint action in favor of moral values that, as faith communities, we share."
"We do not come together as politicians, military men, or businessmen, but meet as faith communities," he said. "As companions we are linked to one another for the good, for 'shalom,' for the peace of humanity."
There were about 30 representatives from the Jewish community, headed by Israel Singer, head of the International Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee.
Calling the meeting "a great challenge," Singer said there is a "great need to help Jews and Catholics find common cause, that is, to work for justice and charity." The meeting ends Thursday.

There is nothing in the article to suggest that the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church had anything to do with this statement."What is your point? Ordinarily when you want to know what the Catholic Church says, you ask the Catholic Church. It isn’t a matter of trusting or not trusting Jews, it’s just that they don’t define what the Catholic Church says. Catholics are rather used to their Church being misquoted in the press. Most of us here on FR don’t trust any news report unless we can also find and read the document from the Church. Fact is, the press is nearly always wrong.
To the extent that there is a class of persons we don't trust (though I can't speak for Alberta) it would be the press.
But you're right about one thing: there's not a damn thing the Catholic Church might say that would impinge in any way, on the deep-rooted anti-Semitic feelings held by millions of Roman Catholics, even today after all that has happened.You are as bigoted as those you condemn. I seriously doubt you have even half a basis for that. The most anti-Semitic “Catholics” are those who have rejected the Church, either to the left of the right. Mainstream Catholicism is hardly anti-Semitic. Likewise, mainstream Catholics aren’t anti-semitic either.

Scholars, religious leaders to hold Jewish-Catholic panel on anti-Semitism

Catholic and Jewish scholars will try to enlist the Catholic Church to an open fight against anti-Semitism in a dialogue that opens in Buenos Aires tomorrow. It is the first time that the dialogue, held by delegates representing the two religions every three years, will take place in a South American country that is a bastion of the Catholic Church.
Each delegation has 25 members, including senior religious figures, scholars and experts on Vatican and Jewish relations. The Catholic side is headed by Cardinal Walter Casper, commissioner for the Church's relations with the Jews, and has 10 other cardinals from the United States and other countries. The Jewish delegation consists of rabbis and representatives of large American Jewish Organizations and six Israeli delegates including Minister Nathan Sharansky and Rabbi Sh'ear Yashuv Cohen, formerly Haifa chief rabbi. The rabbis represent the three religious streams in American Jewry.
Entitled "Justice and Charity," the dialogue will last until Thursday and was initially planned to deal with formulating a joint plan for both religions to alleviate poverty caused by the economic crisis in Argentina. However, following the incidents of anti-Semitism in Europe, both sides agreed to hold a serious debate on anti-Semitism and formulate a way to make the Catholic Church part of the struggle against it.
"The dialogue in Buenos Aires is part of a global effort against anti-Semitism," said Ilan Steinberg, director of the World Jewish Congress on Friday. "The dialogue will be a sequel to the conference on anti-Semitism organized by the European Commission in Brussels, to the declaration against anti-Semitism made at the world conference in Berlin, and to the seminar against anti-Semitism in the UN two weeks ago."
The dialogue is being held as the Jewish community in Buenos Aires prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of the terror attack that wrecked the building of the Jewish community offices in the city.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe the International Catholic Jewish Liaison Committee is the official point of contact between the Vatican and the worldwide Jewish community, created as a result of Nostra Aetate's call for dialog between Catholics and the Jewish Community.
It would seem to me to be not only a legitimate forum, but the place where discussions such as this should be taking place.
It would appear the sources cited here are credible as representing both the Jewish and Catholic communities, with the exception of Francisco's, of course.
