"Good Owners Great Dogs" by Brian Kilcommons Thanks for reminding me - for the life of me I couldn't remember the name of the book or the author.
I used to have a copy of it and have no idea whatever happened to it.

It is a great suggestion, but both of my dogs are terrified of the vacuum cleaner-they refuse to occupy the same floor of the house where it is being used. I have no idea why this is so, but I don't understand why the Husky runs inside the house when deer come to eat in front of the house on the other side of a fence and locked gate, either. Neither dog is afraid of humans, and they bark at strangers, but they are afraid of a household appliance.

lots of guys have beer bellies. VRWCteenboy likes to slap his abs and brag about his 6-pack. I laugh and tell him that's nothing, I've got a whole keg.

I think I am going to be without my computer one more day, with any luck they will give it back this afternoon, but if not, it will be tomorrow.
To: Ragtime Cowgirl
LOL, good for you, it's always best to keep an eye on these guys. :-)

btw - Apologies for posting and running over the last few weeks - my dad went in for heart surgery and I've been spending more time around the folks' house. Everything went fine (knock wood), but I've just been a little more busy than usual.

Hi Miss Rika. Did you like today's word?
To: VRWCmember
I do like today's word, very creative.
To: RikaStrom; VRWCmember; camle
But I was first in class and first to turn in homework and vast hasn't given me a grade. Sea Dragon hasn't mentioned the poem I wrote her yesterday either. I feel like an Outcast. It must be my fame. What do I do with all this money? I better ask camle.

I clearly stated that Miss Rika has locked the gradebook up due to concerns about grade inflation. After all, this isn't Harvard, where everyone gets an A, you know. I did congratulate you on keeping the yellow jersey, but I'm not responsible for grades today.

That is an example of some of the simple ideas discussed in the book. In addition, saturday am on animal planet you can catch Good dog U. It is a great show. Of course my dog learned to lie still while I eat by doing this and of course sneaking her tid bits while she was behaving. (You can give them pieces of their normal kibble and they think it is human food.)
The biggest thing about this is that dogs, as pack animals, are used to eating at their appropriate time (according to their rank in the heirarchy). In fact, the leader of the pack often gives food to the lower ranking animals. By slipping bits of food to your dog you reinforce that you are the leader of the pack and xspup only eats because you provide it. After they get this message training them to stay off the table is a breeze.
Another interesting thing, dogs growl or bark to send messages, hearing the leader of the pack bark sends a hugh and series message. They don't want to be scolded or barked at by the provider of their food. To them, your yelling is barking.
I taught my dog to stay out of the garbage with this in mind. I was playing with her using a balled up paper bag. I put it on the edge of the garbage can, when she happily went for it I yelled very loud "NO, Garbage!". She would run and hide for about 5 minutes. Then we would be back at it. After about 3 sessions, she hasn't touched garbage since.
Keep in mind I rarely yell at her, speak firm but rarely yell. So yelling is a HUGH thing for her.

Good one. I am picturing your dog assembling an airplane or rifle..........Hmmm, can you send him over, I have some lawn work that needs done, then he can repair the car.
I think my dog has a higher IQ than me, she just doesn't want me to figure that out. I might expect her to earn the cash and let me mooch!

So do you want me to unlock the door and put a new word on the chalkboard again tomorrow? If so, I'll open the class sometime between 7:30 and 8:00 AM Central time in the morning.

No problem, I read many books before getting my pup, that was heads and tails better than the rest.
