The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Oh - If it wasn't from right now, then I wouldn't worry about it...
If you had the firewall on - is it possible that what you saw was just a popup from that site that is made to look like Messenger? - I have seen that.... the popups that look like legitimate dialogue boxes...

No - it is part of Windows.... but you should never see a real messenger message and he is looking into how to turn it off.

Just get it showin' a little at least!!! I like to see hair on a guy. Me, too, Wn! I've convinced SSQ to let his grow out a little more and comb it straight back. His grandaddy had longer hair up until his death at age 94. His hair was swept back, and it came across the back of his neck at just about collar length.
Both our older boys went to a private Catholic high school, so didn't wear their hair long at all until they went to college. Both decided, separately, last year to let their hair grow. Now both have long lovely thick hair. It amused SSQ's younger sister no end cause that's what SSQ looked like when I met him 30 yrs. ago!!

Rose and I have a different form of McAfee.
If the warning occured right after you downloaded the program and updates, then it might have been the newly-installed program trying to communicate back to it's manufacturer to register, etc.
If it hasn't occured since then, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Messenger spam is just like any other spam, it's not limited to McAfee. It sounds like the one you had may have been connected to your McAfee, though. But again, if it hasn't happened since the 13th, it may have been a one-time thing associated with the downloads and updates you installed then.

while you all are praying, please pray for my grandfather - he's very frail and may not come though it. :(What's his first name, Ruthy? I'll put him on our Parish Prayer line. I'll put you on, as well, to make the best job decision.
I prayed for you yesterday at Mass. The lector was a young woman with a slight Latin accent, and long dark hair. She made me think of you SO much!

Hey all,
Don't suppose you all saw this announcement over at TORn today?
They say they don't have a list of theaters doing this yet, but they will post it when they do.
I don't care how far I have to drive. I'm doing this.

Well, it's happened twice today. I just noticed the logged warning for the Nok Nok thing today, when I viewed my log. The pop-up happened today, twice. The Nok Nok (trojan) thing happened on the 13th.

2J, here's a Microsoft website about Messenger Spam:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp Their recommendation is to turn on the Windows XP Firewall, which should work.
Another workaround is to turn off the Messenger Service. However, that may affect legitimate programs too, so it's not generally recommended by Microsoft. Here's how to do it:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel (or point to Settings, and then click Control Panel).
2. Double-click Administrative Tools.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Double-click Messenger.
5. In the "Startup type" list, choose Disabled.
6. Click Stop, and then click OK.

OK, it seems you have two unrelated things happening: the Nok Nok warning, and the Messenger Spam. Since the Nok Nok warning has not happened again since the 13th (if I'm reading your posts right) I don't think you should worry about it. Configuring the XP firewall as described on the website I referenced in my last post should take care of the Messenger Spam.

You know what, I figured out how to turn that off...but am reluctant to do so...I now have my XP firewall on, in addition to my McAfee...
Here is a question...when this happens again, I should be able to do a "control alt delete" and see if my messenger is the one they are using, right? If it's not...if it's just a pop-up add looking like one, it'll just say Internet Explorer...right? Like when I do "Control Alt Delete" right now, one of the applications says "Posting Comment-Microsoft Internet Explorer" for what I'm doing right now...
Does that make sense? I think I should be able to see what is happening when I do Control alt delete...

Yes, doing "ctrl-alt-delete" when a message appears should tell you what application is causing it, whether it's IE or Messenger Service. From the screen picture you posted, I strongly suspect it's Messenger Service. Hopefully the XP firewall will stop them from happening any more.
