Matthew is supposed to learn how to figure a missing number. Here is the example in his book...
N+6=10
N+6(-6)=10(-6)
N=4
What the hell does THAT mean?? N+6(-6)?????
God help me, it makes absolutely no sense to me. Why even PUT something like that? I can understand N+6=10 10-6=4 N=4...why do they complicate it with all that crap???
God help me, I am nearly crying I'm so irritated and frustrated! I explained it to Matthew just the way the book says...all the while acting like it wasn't the STUPIDEST thing I have ever heard of. Then smiling, I sent him off to study his spelling words, which he is now doing while I have an absolute RIGOR here in the HOLE.

morning everyone. Fall is finally here in Texas (and should stay at least through the weekend :P ). I'm all shivering this morning. The cold front took us by surprise. We reached our high temp of 71 degrees just after midnight. When I took Spiderboy to preschool this morning, it was 44 degrees. Brr. I thought the weather dude said it would be 53 degrees today. I like the cool weather, but I don't like being surprised by it.

Well, I understand it...I just don't see the point of putting it that way...seems mighty wordy, don't you think? Why do I have to teach him something so wordy, when he could accomplish the very same thing in a more smooth and linear fashion??
That N+6(-6) business is beyond stupid imo...
Is there a logical explanation for putting it that way? If so, I will get off line and you can call me.
BTW...I failed algebra 4 times in highschool.

You start off with the equation, N+6=10.
Subtract 6 from each side.
6-6=0, so the left side becomes N+0, right side becomes 10-6 or 4.
Solution is N=4.

What text book are you using?
I can remember the one we used doing that - showing subtraction from BOTH sides to solve...though it was easier for me just to think of it as moving to the other side of the equals sign - which makes it a negative number.
i.e.
n+6=10
n=10-6
n=4
But I have seen it written the way you show it.
Dad usually threw out the rules and just taught us his way. ;-) I'm impressed that Matthew is already doing pseudo algebra, though!

Algebra always makes me extremely argumentative. It has always seemed so irritating to me. Like..."What are you bringing letters into this for? If you don't know what something is, leave it blank but leave the alphabet out of the numbers system."
