The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Is it Friday yet?

Can't be. There's too much to do on my Thursday "to do" list...and that's after I leave the office.

There has been a disharmonic convergence in the Stormhands family Daytimer. Corin is about to call the family together for a "Come to Mother Earth" meeting...

Don't be a stranger pal. Let us know how you're doing.

BTW, when do you need the next round of checks? And how much? I'm thinkin' you said late December, but I'd rather go ahead and beat the Christmas ru$h on my checkbook...

Mary had a little lime
and a lot of gin
And every where that Mary went
She didn't know she'd been!

LOL. I love that!

Your posts always bring back so many memories. I was a frustrated science teacher kind of mom. And my son, in particular, the perfect student. Everything we did together became an experiment. One I remember was the night we walked through the grocery store parking lot full of crickets. I don't remember how it started, but the argument was that I was squashing more crickets than he. We spent the next half hour calculating the differences in stride/shoe size from the car to the door, and tallying hit-rates. he was about 8 then. (Yeah, his almost double stride more than compensated my larger shoe size.)

And they would be what I consider "backyard" chickens at that.

A detail I had previously missed! That changes everything! I am not sure how, but I am sure it does.

Woohoooo! I love this part.

In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face.

All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dínen.

‘You cannot enter here,’ said Gandalf, and the huge shadow halted. ‘Go back to the abyss prepared for you! Go back! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your Master. Go!’

The Black Rider flung back his hood, and behold! he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The red fires shone between it and the mantled shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter. ‘Old fool!’ he said. ‘Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!’ And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade.

Gandalf did not move. And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the City, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of wizardry or war, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.

And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin’s sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.

I looked up that breed. Really cool looking eggs.

But over two hundred dollars a chicken? Wow.
