The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Here is something I got from my homeschool list...thought you might find it of interest!

A once in a lifetime event. The Red Planet is about to become a spectacular sight! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be the brightest except for the moon in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this with your children and grandchildren. No one alive will ever see this again.

But, are you driving to Los Alamos? I used to head west from Waco and go through Roswell on our way to Albuquerque, Sante Fe and Red River.

When looking at Mars, be sure to watch for any strange lights on the surface...

During the opposition of 1894 a great light was seen on the illuminated part of the disk, first at the Lick Observatory, then by Perrotin of Nice, and then by other observers. English readers heard of it first in the issue of Nature dated August 2.

Read more about Mars in 1894 here.

Matthew requested this for his special birthday treat!

Indian Fry Bread

3 cups of unbleached flour
2 teaspoons baking power (adjust for high altitudes)
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups warm water or milk
1 tablespoon oil or shortening

Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl except for the oil or shortening. Knead the dough until smooth, then rub oil or shorting over the dough and allow the dough to sit for about 30 minutes. Most often the dough is patted between hands to about 1/8 inch thickness and about the size of your hand. Patting sound of the dough is a clue that fry bread is being prepared. Place the palm sized dough into a deep fryer. Many Native Americans use a deep cooker with hot oil for this part of the preparation. Care must be taken to protect yourself from the hot oil. Fry the dough until the bread is golden brown, remove and place on a serving dish.

I think this calls for safety glasses.

It's kinda strange you should ask, I just got off the phone with Terry asking him about the calls and even saying it's a shame we couldn't get Los Alamos and Irvine together 'cause we could tell his boss we are going to drive it and go through Roswell on up to Los Alamos then on to LA. We could ship FF to his next vacation spot from LA. It could be "There and Not Back Again"

We are praying about it. Maybe God will let it come through...maybe He could use a laugh. I sure could.

Also told Terry about the invite to your neck of the woods...again maybe this will work out. It would be alot of fun.

Oh drool.

You're cruel to me. I love that stuff!

With honey

Or powdered sugar

Or jam

Or as a taco shell

Or a tostada shell

Oh my.

Thanks for the info on Mars. We're gonna be in MT until the 19th, so we'll go out at night and check it out. We're hoping the place we're staying is way away from city lights so our view of the heavens is a good one.

We may fry bread (dough-daddles) with regular yeast dough. These sound much easier. I want! I'll have to try this recipe at some point...
