The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I don't like having a zillion different tools, but I at least have a swiss tool (not a swiss army knife) and use the screwdriver! Not a blade! For 99% of my PC work, I get by with a Key Gear pen/screwdriver in my shirt pocket, and a Photon MicroLight on my keychain. Back at my cubicle is my combination briefcase/toolbag with cable tester, DVM, assorted torx and security bits, screwdrivers, snips, lock pick, and micro tools. I've found that a fiber optic light guide on my Maglight helps me figure out how to take apart a notebook, since it lets me light up the inside through one opening while I peer inside through another.
But most of my tools come on a stack of CDs that have software that I can't get from the network for one reason or another. Plus a 256MB "thumb drive" to copy software from PCs that aren't hooked up to anything, and a portable CD burner. Can't never have too many computer tools.
I've had some weird service calls, such as saving critical data from a floppy that had been dropped in a bucket of soapy water. Or repairing the damage to all the computer equipment in the psych ward after a patient had a bad trip on his new meds.
One of my messiest reapir jobs was fixing a PC that had a whole glass of orange juice spilled into it. The keyboard was a total loss, but I got a gallon jug of alcohol from the lab, and washed out the PC and air-dried everything. I put it back together, and it worked!
Oh, and grape juice etches soldered connections worse than orange juice does.

Ramius go tell ecurbh that before he takes your sister to the backgammon room he should at least ask her verbally. I thought it looked like a very attractive proposition as it was!
(taking a break from playing and listening to symphony pieces we will hear in Seattle [grin])

I saw it on the news! Hitting your area pretty hard. It's sinking down on top of us from the north but is supposed to die out before it gets here.

Doesn't like stewed coneys? Or venison? I will eat anything that already looks like food when it arrives here. I just can't take the drama of the conversion.

That's why you need someone there to take care of those "middle" processes for you.

Mostly white tail around here too Sam, though we do have blacktail.... And only mule deer here if there are any, would be on the eastern slopes of the Cascades, I think.

Okay, I'm going to really open myself up for some joking with this one. But, am I just an over 40 prude or what? The local TV news sports report was interviewing a player from a junior high in town. The interviewer asks what kind of season the kid expects to have. The response is "Well watch us, we're gonna get out there and kick some butt. We're gonna show those mofos who's the best in town. Okay, is this not a little out of line for a jr high kid to be saying on the news?

So, this means I can pretty much say whatever I want to you and you can't talk back doesn't it? No... it just means that I had to wait to get my keyboard dried out and put back together. :-) bbbzzzzzt. Game over.

OK, as threatened, it's long one, but here goes
"The Adventures of Flat Frodo in Massachusetts"
After the trip from Baltimordor, Frodo arrives in the state the locals call TAXachusetts, and stretches his legs in SuziQ's front yard.

Poor Frodo, SuziQ takes him to a picnic, but she and ecurbh are having a great laugh at his expense
"Why does everyone want to do this when they take my picture?"

Frodo goes on a trip with the Girl Scouts! He's in the great city of New York, where a horrendous attack took place a couple of years ago.
He visits the Fire Company that lost the most men on that terrible day. They let him climb up onto their truck!

He stays at a very nice Inn called the Hilton
and he sees some interesting sights ...
Frodo, come and meet those dancing feet, on the Avenue I'm taking you to, 42nd St.

Look, Frodo, lembas!

There are many strange things along this street, like a wax man in a sparkly skirt

and 'fell beasts'

He also finds a familiar face, though in a swarthy guise.

Before we leave the city, Frodo has a nice Hobbit sized breakfast
Then he goes to a wild place called The Bronx Zoo. There are oliphaunts!
"I wish Sam were with me"

You must be careful Frodo, there are fell beasts here as well!
Grizzly Bears!

and Wargs!

Fortunately, Gwaihir is nearby to fly Frodo away from the danger!

A few days later, Frodo took a trip to the Shire! New HampSHIRE, that is. It reminded him of Ithilien with the deep glades

and waterfalls

These look like the Misty Mountains, Frodo!

Look out Frodo, Sting is glowing, there must be Orcs in those mountains!

Frodo was able to watch the fireworks that celebrate our country's independence,

then he was off to visit MBY in Texas!

After watching TV this evening (NYPD Blue, which wasn't bad, but the commercials were unbelievable) and then the news this evening, Steve and I both just shook our heads...it was just one digusting aweful thing after another.
We really want to get our farm and "head for the hills" so to speak...
