Word For The Day, Monday, July 28, 2003: Fugacious

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

quietus \kwye-EE-tus\ noun
1. final settlement (as of a debt)
2. removal from activity; especially death *
3. something that quiets or represses

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence: "This book is also about the death of Lavrenti Pavlovich Beria, a quietus that for reasons not satisfactorily explained has been placed a year later than it actually occurred." (Ruth Rendell, _The New York Times Book Review_, April 6, 1986)

Did you know?
In the early 1500s, English speakers adopted the Medieval Latin phrase "quietus est" (literally "he is quit") as the name for the writ of discharge exempting a baron or knight from payment of a knight's fee to the king. The expression was later shortened to "quietus" and applied to the termination of any debt. William Shakespeare was the first to use "quietus" as a metaphor for the termination of life: "For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, ...When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin?" (_Hamlet_). The third meaning, which is more influenced by "quiet" than "quit," appeared in the 19th century. It sometimes occurs in the phrase "put the quietus on" (as in, "The bad news put the quietus on their celebration").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

You definitely have it worse than we do but temps above 100 are not the norm for this area. It is toasty....

Now just because Baby Girl was used to the umbrella in the rain is no reason to get xs2pup used to it!

Now the fuzzbutt on the other hand, goes and splashes in the puddles.

LOL

I wish we were with you right now, Miss Rika. This weather is something else. Can't believe it. Cyber and I are going to have t-shirts made up with the saying, "Survived July 2003 in Arizona."

Now, that's a real cool dog splashing in the puddles. I'll bet the xs2pup will be doing the same thing in about a month or so. He's still young.

Box O'Rocks loves the rain, but Side O'Beef just runs in and out of the doggie door. Side doesn't want to get his precious flesh wet.

Well, if I can survive 4 weeks of rain, y'all can have a little heat. ;-)

The weather has definitely been odd, and the dang radio people still say we are short of the rain we need. They obviously don't live anywhere close to where I am!

Fuzzbutt not only gets her delicate little feet wet, she comes in completely soaked, determined to make me the same way. I tell you, she's a doozy!

Grimmy has a lovely hose, but it won't reach to AZ

Not unless it's properly inspired, of course. 8-])

I've read about desert survival and I know where food and moisture can be obtained. I've been to the desert on short hikes. But I'd like to try 3 days with knife, tarp, compass, and matches.

Morning XS. I am hoping today is better than yesterday. I had a 2 hour meeting at 8:30 am then the server was whacked out. Yesterday sucked. Missed a lot of fun and slippy gave me triple F minus.

Hope the torture goess well. As for GE, if he can't fix anything on an oven in one hour (if he has the parts) I'd kick his A. I have 1 sick tech and 1 in a class in Dallas. That leaves me a full load of work with 20% reduction in resources. That sux.
