Word For The Day, Monday, July 28, 2003: Fugacious

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

quietus \kwye-EE-tus\ noun
1. final settlement (as of a debt)
2. removal from activity; especially death *
3. something that quiets or represses

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence: "This book is also about the death of Lavrenti Pavlovich Beria, a quietus that for reasons not satisfactorily explained has been placed a year later than it actually occurred." (Ruth Rendell, _The New York Times Book Review_, April 6, 1986)

Did you know?
In the early 1500s, English speakers adopted the Medieval Latin phrase "quietus est" (literally "he is quit") as the name for the writ of discharge exempting a baron or knight from payment of a knight's fee to the king. The expression was later shortened to "quietus" and applied to the termination of any debt. William Shakespeare was the first to use "quietus" as a metaphor for the termination of life: "For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, ...When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin?" (_Hamlet_). The third meaning, which is more influenced by "quiet" than "quit," appeared in the 19th century. It sometimes occurs in the phrase "put the quietus on" (as in, "The bad news put the quietus on their celebration").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

There is a book about a man who decided to walk through Death Valley, which is one of the hottest places on earth. He put air condition fluid in his space-type suit. Then he put a lever under his armpit, and when he wanted to cool off, he just raised and lowered his arm. He frozed to death in 125 degree heat.

You can survive the heat in the desert if you're careful. Cacti offer a lot of fluid that is perfectly safe.

Grimmy has a lovely hose, but it won't reach to AZ. We've had a lively discussion in here about hoses.

yes i had multiple child related duties this afternoon. for one thing xsboy was missing at the country club when i went to retrieve him. i looked for 15 min. and could not find him, the woman offered me a golf cart to go and look for him. i gave her an icy stare and said, i have never been on a golf cart in my life i am not about to go in search of him on one. so i left him. his father had to leave work to go and retrieve him bc by that point, i had 3 other places i needed to be with the other two kids. i was fuming at xsboy!

very sweet and well behaved, he has had fewer than a handful of accidents in the house in a week's time, which seems pretty remarkable for a 3 mo old babypup.

it is raining here, slippy, i hope you are not J of me. i am sure xs2pup will not want to go out in that!

I am jealous of you! You have rain. We're getting alerts still, but haven't had any droplets. It's the only thing that cools this town down.

What kind of spaniel is xs2pup?

Danged storm passed right by us again. But there's another one behind it. Hopefully, we'll get that one. And, yes, I do need that bucket of water. Oh, well, bucket, if you get my gist.

He's a gorgeous doggie. I do so love spaniels. Can he jump really high yet? My old Brittany could jump over six foot fences in just a leap.
