They say that their friend wish their dads were like me. I was always the most popular parent with the kids on the track team from 7th grade through 12th grade. My dad was also one of the most popular on the block when I was growing up. I never remember any of the other dads out playing ball in the street with the kids (even when my brother and I weren't) and my dad always did it.

I taught the neighborhood kids football, baseball, bike riding, basic construction, respect for each other and adults. One neighbor asked once why all the kids played in my yard. I told him because they wanted a coach and referee. I do the same thing to a lesser degree now. Laura Earl and I get little visits from the neighborhood kids 3 years old through 12 or so. Why? Because we are the only adults outside.
