I taught the neighborhood kids football, baseball, bike riding, basic construction, respect for each other and adults. One neighbor asked once why all the kids played in my yard. I told him because they wanted a coach and referee. I do the same thing to a lesser degree now. Laura Earl and I get little visits from the neighborhood kids 3 years old through 12 or so. Why? Because we are the only adults outside.

Same with my dad. And as we all got older he still hung out with the "guys."
It was nothing for some of my and my brothers friends to just show up when dad was outside doing something in the yard or just sitting on the front steps - and they always brought beer with them and never mooched it from my father, unlike most of the other "men" in the neighborhood.
