He also shoots documentaries with some (trivial) matters that are moviemaking and not factual. In Little Deiter Needs To Fly, he profiles a Vietnam veteran who's aircraft was downed and was taken prisoner (he later escaped his captors). The house he is interviewed in is not his own (although that is how it seems to be presented) and there is a trait where Deiter is shown being fascinated every time he opens a door even decades after his freedom; this was fake.
The director readily admits to his tricks (and has generally provided full commentary tracks to his films on DVD).
I've met him twice and heard him speak regarding his movies. I wouldn't put his filmmaking style in the same camp as Michael Moore. He's a German director but as I understand it he resides in America these days. He shot a documentary on the Kuwaitti oil fires (and the men who put them out) from Gulf War I but I have not seen it.
Even if he does not "find" Nessie I think that he will have the opportunity to make an interesting film.
When his friend and main star Klaus Kinski wrote an autobiography, Werner helped Klaus to write really nasty things about Mr. Herzog!
He even shot one of the few all midget movies (Even Dwarfs Started Small), The Terror Of Tiny Town is the only other one that springs to my mind.
Amazing. A German that understands capitalism.
