Today during Gen. Franks' news conference I noticed that he was wearing the shoulder patch indicating the First Cavalry Division.
Having NO military background, I am curious. Since he is a four-star (I think that's a "Lieutenant General," isn't it?), which is a VERY high rank, and is in command of MANY divisions of troops (he is actually an ARMY commander, isn't he--as in "Third Army" or what have you?) why is he sporting the insignia of that one particular division?
Thanks, FReepers, I know you'll come up with the answer!

After World War II, the wearing of a unit patch on the right shoulder was approved to denote service in combat with that unit.

May I presume that he once commanded that unit?

Here's the general's Central Command bio:
http://www.centcom.mil/aboutus/cdrbio.htm Franks was assigned to the 1st Cav in 1987 as Division Artillery commander. He was also Chief of Staff of the 1st Cav during that time. He served as Assistant Division Commander (Maneuver) in Desert Storm, as SAMWolf said.
I've met people who served in the 1st Cav. It's a proud tradition, and it wouldn't surprise me if they slept with that patch on.
