You didn't miss anything. For a few minutes Drudge and another typically reliable news source had a headline there would be a presidential news conference at 9:00 p.m. tonight. The headlines were quickly removed from the web sites. We're all speculating.

There's nothing going on and I'd be surprised if anything happens before tomorrow night.

George W. Bush to address America later today

Tuesday, 18 March , 2003 08:04:08

Reporter: John Shovelan
LINDA MOTTRAM: US President George W. Bush will speak to the American people later today and he will also, of course, be addressing the world.

Our Correspondent John Shovelan is on the line from Washington.

John, what's the President expected to say?

JOHN SHOVELAN: Well this is the speech the world's been waiting for. President Bush will signal it's time for people who can leave, to get out.

We'll hear some of the arguments that have been put time and time again about why he believes Saddam Hussein is a threat and of course central to the address is the ultimatum to Saddam Hussein.

The US Government has a list of senior Iraqi civilian and military officials, along with Saddam Hussein and his son. The speech will demand that these people accept life in exile and very quickly. That, the President will say, is the only way that there will be what they are calling a peaceful entry of force.

Now many people here in the administration believe the clock is already ticking on that. How long has Saddam Hussein got? The President probably won't be specific on that. Officials say he's got about 72 hours and that's really based on how long it takes to make sure everyone who is leaving has the chance to get out before a war.

LINDA MOTTRAM: And after the failure to get a second resolution through the UN, how does Washington now deal with the United Nations?

JOHN SHOVELAN: Well the President's speech will include an outreach to the UN and to those countries who've opposed its push to war with Iraq. He'll say countries that did oppose the US position won't be excluded from the reconstruction and that the US Government will seek UN Security Council resolutions for post-war Iraq.

And interestingly tonight, he'll refer to the fact that this address is not just for home consumption and is going to an international audience.

LINDA MOTTRAM: John Shovelan, our Correspondent in Washington.

IMO HLL source likely got the info from Stratfor and it's like the telephone game where the more people tell it, the less likely it resembles the truth.

Which I can totally understand how that could happen. But you don't post a WRONG source....and then fall back on a few more sources, imo.

I have nightmares about the "WHY" ...there might be a news embargo until the very last minute.

With lives at stake...it just makes NO sense to perpetuate that "so and so" told "so and so" who told "so and so" game.

Who knows what the consequences are of having this information released too early?

Do I want to know the 'when'.......sure.

Do I NEED to know the 'when' if I thought that information was being specifically witheld from the public until the very last minute...(enemies are part of the public, too)......NO!

Just my opinion.

Remembering Gulf War I, a day or so passed after the deadline before we went in. "Softened" the bad guys up a little - no sleep for a while!

Perhaps Bush feels Saddam will think that again and give him a little lesson on punctuality.

In 25 minutes the timing of the start of hostilities will be all up to the military. That'll have to do with weather, coordination, etc.
