I didn't know the details either. But, I did recall reading a story about the yacht in Boat US magazine about a year ago. She is a beautiful yacht and I'm glad to see that she became a National Historic landmark even after being sold.

I had heard that it was in such a great need of repair that the decision was made to unload it, rather than fix it. I was sure it had been decommissioned in the 70s. Now I'm doubting all I thought I knew about it.

LOL, that was a good one.
on a side note, I saw a special on the history channel about the yacht. It is actually owned by a private citizens, but is at times loaned to public officials, for example Clinton met with Gorbachov on it in the early 90's.
