My dad sent this to me in an e-mail. Sorry if it's been posted before. I checked and didn't find it.

The Pope is visiting DC and President Bush takes him out for an afternoon on the Potomac...sailing on the pres. yacht, the Sequoia. They're admiring the sights when, all of a sudden, the Pope's hat (zucchetto) blows off his head and out into the water. Secret service guys start to launch a boat, but Bush waves them off, saying "Wait, wait. I'll take care of this. Don't worry."

Bush then steps off the yacht onto the surface of the water and walks out to the Holy Father's little hat, bends over and picks it up, then walks back to the yacht and climbs aboard. He hands the hat to the Pope amid stunned silence.

The next morning, the Washington Post carries a story, with front page photos, of the event. The banner headline is

"Bush Can't Swim."

Funny, very funny. BTW, the Sequoia was decommissioned more than 20 years ago. The last president it served was President Ford, IIRC.

From www.sequoiayacht.com

Gerald Ford used the Sequoia to both entertain both foreign leaders (e.g., Pierre Trudeau and Emperor Hirchito) and to host cabinet meetings (which included Alan Greenspan, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld).

Jimmy Carter's cabinet members used the Sequoia before Carter decided to sell it. After the government sold the Sequoia, the yacht was designated as a national historic landmark and Presidents continued to use her. Ronald Reagan went to the Sequoias gangplank in Richmond, Virginia to greet the nation's Governors who were on board. George Bush entertained the Premier of China on a cruise. In October 2000, Bill Clinton met with high tech executives on board................... (high tech execs? Is that what they called interns then?)

Wow, I didn't know that. I had heard that it wasn't used by any president past Ford. Thanks for the info.

I didn't know the details either. But, I did recall reading a story about the yacht in Boat US magazine about a year ago. She is a beautiful yacht and I'm glad to see that she became a National Historic landmark even after being sold.

I had heard that it was in such a great need of repair that the decision was made to unload it, rather than fix it. I was sure it had been decommissioned in the 70s. Now I'm doubting all I thought I knew about it.

LOL, that was a good one.

on a side note, I saw a special on the history channel about the yacht. It is actually owned by a private citizens, but is at times loaned to public officials, for example Clinton met with Gorbachov on it in the early 90's.
