Word For The Day, Wednesday 2/05/03
2/05/03

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Thank you, VRWCMember, for today's WFTD!
anabasis, noun:
plural:anabases
1. An advance; an expedition.
2. A large-scale military advance, specifically the Greek mercenary expedition across Asia Minor in 401 B.C. led by Cyrus the Younger of Persia, as described by Xenophon. It was unsuccessful, and the Greeks, led by Xenophon, retreated to the Black Sea.
Etymology: Greek, from anabainein, to go up. See anabaena

Election day here yesterday. The goodwife said a total of 27 voters turned out -- and for that she had to run the station from 7 AM to 8 PM. What a waste of the taxpayer's dollar:

So funny. The good wife had never seen the movie, so we watched it over the weekend...

you know WR is of Latvian extraction? right, WR? On my mother's side--the only branch of my family tree I care to think about--yes, indeed. Good for the Letts, I say.

I hope you enjoyed it. I laugh out loud at the opening credits everytime I watch it. It's also funny to quote miscellaneous appropos lines from the movie in other settings and note who in the group recognizes it. (For example, yesterday in my training class the discussion turned to a situation in which someone was to blame for some bad decision or something like that and I chimed in with "those responsible have been sacked" and the instructor busted out laughing.)

Our old friends the French, in their usual weaselly, hop-on-the-train-after-it's-left-the-station fashion,
are sorta-kinda making plans behind their own backs to join our anabasis against Hussein. From the sound of this article, I'm not sure if this would be a bonus for us or for the Iraqi army.
Oh, and I'm including this item simply because the thought of Clinton and Christopher Hitchens sharing the same lesbian girlfriend is one that will haunt my nightmares for years to come.

I hope you enjoyed it. I laugh out loud at the opening credits everytime I watch it. Absolutely! It's been, well, decades since I last saw it, and I'd forgotten much.

be careful what you drink down there, maxie! Gadzooks. Crazy mofos... Well these days I am a-drinkin' mostly coffee and other such drugged beverages... Trying to keep the water intake up because I am nominally (i.e., half-a$$ed, no, 1/4-a$$ed) prepping for the colonial half marathon the end of this month...
Don't suppose a "pur" water filter would do anything if someone mickeyed the water supply...
Oh well when it's yer time to go, it's yer time to go...

ROTFL....It is reported on the Powell Does the UN (Live) Thread, that he just used a Photo of an Iraqi owned Mirage Jetfighter, making a mock run at deploying Airborne Anthrax....
If you think Back to the SOTU, this Administration, relishes publicly kicking it's opponents in the Balls.

Funny how it keeps popping up -- just saw this quote on the Powell Live Speech thread:
"Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. -- Dennis"

Two little kids are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other, outside the operating room. The first kid leans over and asks, "What are you in here for?" The second kid says, "I'm in here to get my tonsils out and I'm a little nervous."
The first kid says, "You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-o and ice-cream. It's a breeze."
The second kid then asks, "What are you here for?"
The first kid says, "A circumcision."
The second kid replies, "Whoa, Good luck buddy. I had that done when I was born.Couldn't walk for a year."
