My mother was a parish visiting nurse in Louisiana. One of her duties was to take the birth certificate to be signed if the birth was at home. Many were, even in the fifties and sixties. Many times she tried to talk the mother or father out of their chosen names.

One of her favorite stories was of one mother who insisted on calling her newborn daughter "Placenta Privia" because she had heard it mentioned by the nurse- midwife during labor and thought it so pretty.
