At the request of members, I am restarting those "Tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast"-- the stories and issues that the press and media either ignore, won't even talk about, or will mention once and forevermore claim "it's old news..."
Naturally, some will be stories which interest me, or things I think we all need to be aware of.
I am experimenting with a minor change in presentation- when I can, I will cut to

with a keyword or two and see what kind of links to "mainstream" stories I can find in contrast to what we see here and on other sites.

The Clinton administration has turned the Community Reinvestment Act, a once-obscure and lightly enforced banking regulation law, into one of the most powerful mandates shaping American cities—and, as Senate Banking Committee chairman Phil Gramm memorably put it, a vast extortion scheme against the nation's banks. Under its provisions, U.S. banks have committed nearly $1 trillion for inner-city and low-income mortgages and real estate development projects, most of it funneled through a nationwide network of left-wing community groups, intent, in some cases, on teaching their low-income clients that the financial system is their enemy and, implicitly, that government, rather than their own striving, is the key to their well-being.
The CRA's premise sounds unassailable: helping the poor buy and keep homes will stabilize and rebuild city neighborhoods. As enforced today, though, the law portends just the opposite, threatening to undermine the efforts of the upwardly mobile poor by saddling them with neighbors more than usually likely to depress property values by not maintaining their homes adequately or by losing them to foreclosure. The CRA's logic also helps to ensure that inner-city neighborhoods stay poor by discouraging the kinds of investment that might make them better off.
The Act, which Jimmy Carter signed in 1977, grew out of the complaint that urban banks were "redlining" inner-city neighborhoods, refusing to lend to their residents while using their deposits to finance suburban expansion. CRA decreed that banks have "an affirmative obligation" to meet the credit needs of the communities in which they are chartered, and that federal banking regulators should assess how well they do that when considering their requests to merge or to open branches. Implicit in the bill's rationale was a belief that CRA was needed to counter racial discrimination in lending, an assumption that later seemed to gain support from a widely publicized 1990 Federal Reserve Bank of Boston finding that blacks and Hispanics suffered higher mortgage-denial rates than whites, even at similar income levels.
In addition, the Act's backers claimed, CRA would be profitable for banks. They just needed a push from the law to learn how to identify profitable inner-city lending opportunities. Going one step further, the Treasury Department recently asserted that banks that do figure out ways to reach inner-city borrowers might not be able to stop competitors from using similar methods—and therefore would not undertake such marketing in the first place without a push from Washington.
None of these justifications holds up, however, because of the changes that reshaped America's banking industry in the 1990s. Banking in the 1970s, when CRA was passed, was a highly regulated industry in which small, local savings banks, rather than commercial banks, provided most home mortgages. Regulation prohibited savings banks from branching across state lines and sometimes even limited branching within states, inhibiting competition, the most powerful defense against discrimination. With such regulatory protection, savings banks could make a comfortable profit without doing the hard work of finding out which inner-city neighborhoods and borrowers were good risks and which were not. Savings banks also had reason to worry that if they charged inner-city borrowers a higher rate of interest to balance the additional risk of such lending, they might jeopardize the protection from competition they enjoyed. Thanks to these artificially created conditions, some redlining of creditworthy borrowers doubtless occurred.

1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;

5) American’s were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations overseas, living large!...
But American’s wanted ‘CHANGE’!
So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes—we got ‘CHANGE’ allright.
In the PAST YEAR:
1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;
2) Gasoline is now over $3 a gallon
3)Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase);
4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS and prices still dropping;
5) 1% ofAmerican homes are in foreclosure.

It's a good start, John. Next, hammer home
Obama's longstanding involvement with ACORN. ...especially
this. But most importantly, expose the 'Rats for being at the root cause of this economic crisis -- The Community Reinvestment Act, their refusal to reign in Fannie/Freddie when the GOP tried to do so, threatening lawsuits against lenders for not making risky loans to unqualified buyers, etc.
7000 was my prediction earlier today.
That is until the Obama Capital Gains Tax Increase of 2009 gets passed by an overwhelming majority in both Chambers. Then I'm thinking more along the lines of 5000.
Once the healthcare and oil industries are nationalized in early 2010, look for the Dow to fall to under 2000 shortly before all privately owned assets are seized and Wall Street is ultimately shut down.

Obviously, the success of the bailout can't be judged on a couple of weeks in the stock market. Still, the rationale for ramrodding the bailout through Congress with essentially no debate over alternatives was that it was urgently necessary to do something immediately lest financial markets collapse. At the moment, that rationale isn't looking too persuasive.

Barack H. Obama is running around telling everyone that the housing mortgage market collapsed primarily because of some vaguely described "deregulation" that took place sometime under George Bush--or maybe under Clinton; I'm not clear on that. I'm not sure he is.
Whatever his claim is, it's a lie.
The reality is that the housing market collapsed in large part because a coalition of race-baiting bullies brought very heavy pressure to bear on the banks to make more subprime loans on properties in low-income communities. Those who didn't approve the risky subprime loans were accused of "redlining"--i.e., refusing to make loans on properties in those neighborhoods.
Who were these bullies?

U.S. auto sales predicted to plummet to 13.4 million in 2009. Of course, the stock of existing vehicles is huge, and cars last a lot longer, and are a lot better, now. So until they can give you a significant reason to buy a new car -- like much improved gas mileage, or some other feature existing cars don't have -- there's not much of a reason to buy.

The Federal Reserve yesterday boosted its total tab for AIG's rescue to $122.5 billion, adding $37.8 billion to its original $85 billion lifeline three weeks ago. The market will continue to crash until Bush goes to the Rose garden and announces he's unleasing rhe FBI, DOJ, state AG's and the entire justice apparat to nail AIG spa-goers, Raines and the Fannie Mae thieves, hedgers, Fuld.... all these guys that put personal greed over the well-being of stockholders and the US economy. Black Swan, quotes from his own book to show that he has been warning against a systematic collapse of the banking system for a long time. But the collapse was not an instance of a

One of the unrecognized reasons why shakeouts work is because they simplify the system. When a complex system collapses from some emergent event it often splits up into parts and self-corrects. Overly complicated systems break down until they reach a workable degree of simplicity. One of the problems with this election cycle is that both McCain and Obama are, to different degrees, Hive-Men. In Obama’s case he believes the Hive is the solution to the problem. If it’s not working right it only needs to be made bigger. In McCain’s case belief in the Hive takes the form of an attachment to tradition and “bipartisanship”. Things will work if we pull a little here and extend a little there.
The idea that enlarging the problem solves it is alive and well. The Telegraph, for example, has an opinion piece making the case for a global “banking policeman”.
The new Business Secretary, Peter Mandelson, argued last week that new global solutions are needed because “the machinery of global economic governance barely exists”, adding: “It is time for a Bretton Woods for this century.”
Gordon Brown argued as long ago as January 2007 that global regulation was “urgently in need of modernisation and reform”.
So, as the world’s central bankers gather this week in Washington DC for an IMF-World Bank conference to discuss the crisis, the big question they face is whether it is time to establish a global economic “policeman” to ensure the crash of 2008 can never be repeated.
Oh it won’t be repeated. The new layer — the new world banking policeman — will probably ensure that something far more catastrophic eventually occurs. But who will listen? Every problem to a bureaucrat is a situation crying out for a bureaucratic solution. More complexity is their reflexive response. Simplicity? Why it is characteristic of a good design. Everyone should read the book “The Great New Orleans Gun Grab” so you will know what you are in for when Obama comes for your guns. I’ve already lived through this. Never thought I would live to see something like that happen, but no one had any rights at all except those who had the most firepower. A single homeowner with a gun was no match for a half dozen cops with drawn weapons who invaded homes at will.

The meeting was not advertised and attendees were sent directions by text message.
MSNBC(?) reported:
On September 15, newly named Muslim outreach director Minha Husaini spoke to a small group of Muslim leaders and potential Obama supporters at a hotel in Springfield, Virginia, several meeting participants and the campaign said. Two other Obama-affiliated Democratic Party workers joined Husaini and also spoke to the crowd. Some Virginia and Washington, D.C.-based Muslim activists and interested citizens attended, and flyers were passed out from “Arab Americans for Obama” stating Sen. Obama’s goals for achieving peace in the Middle East, protecting the civil liberties of Arab Americans and ending the war in Iraq.
Several participants told NBC News that Husaini and other speakers delivered a standard Obama campaign pitch. “They said, ‘We’re here to get the concerns of Muslim voters and let everyone know that the Obama campaign does want the support of the Muslim community,’ ” recalled one participant, who requested anonymity. The meeting was not advertised and some attendees got text phone messages notifying them that day of the meeting’s location, the participant said.
Nearly a month later, the meeting is drawing controversy--and not because of anything said at the meeting itself.

One meeting attendee was Mahdi Bray of the Muslim American Society, several of the participants said. The MAS website describes Bray as an imam and “long time civil and human rights activist.” Bray’s critics say he has a history of defending terrorists. They point to a video of Bray at a rally in 2000, for example, in which he can be seen pumping his fist in the air in support of the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah. In a 2004 interview, he called the Israeli assassination of a Hamas spiritual leader an “unlawful, cowardly and dangerous act of state-sponsored terrorism.” Bray did not return a call requesting comment.
Also attending the meeting was Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. CAIR is a Muslim-American civil rights group that has, as its website states, “consistently and persistently condemned terrorism and the killing of innocent civilians.” Nonetheless, the group has many critics, especially in law-enforcement circles, and is an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing case.

Cindy McCain slammed antiwar Senator Barack Obama for putting her son's life in danger during a speech in Pennsylvania.
The Telegraph and
Drudge reported:
Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate, had voted against the bill in the senate last year, but later supported a version of the legislation that included a timetable to withdraw troops from the Middle Eastern state.
Until recently Mrs McCain and her husband, the Republican presidential candidate John McCain, have refused to discuss their two sons serving in the US military.
However, all that changed at a rally on Wednesday night in the swing state of Pennsylvania.
"The day that Sen Obama decided to cast a vote to not fund my son when he was serving sent a cold chill through my body," she said. "I would suggest that Sen Obama change shoes with me for just one day and see what it means... to have a loved one serving in the armed forces and more importantly, serving in harm's way."
Mr McCain's running mate Sarah Palin has a son now serving in Iraq, as does the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
In related news... The Washington Times reported that the former community organizer was working behind the scenes against President Bush while the administration was trying to work a deal with the Iraqi government.
Why is this not surprising?

2 of them are found to be outright lies from this article.

Most media background pieces simply note Obama's involvement in a 1995 lawsuit on behalf of ACORN. Attempts to hide evidence of Obama's involvement with ACORN have included wiping the web clean of potentially damaging articles that had appeared, and were previously publicly accessible. Unfortunately, those behind the attempted cover-up failed to realize that in today's day and age, nothing disappears forever. There also exists another layer of the web, the hidden web, which is full of information included in proprietary scholarly databases where these very same "missing" articles can be easily uncovered...

Is that really a FACT, or just another lie? Let's take a look at a quote from a 2004 article - Case Study: Chicago- The Barack Obama Campaign - written Toni Foulkes, a Chicago ACORN Leader, which was published in the journal Social Policy. Did we mention that Social Policy recently pulled this particular article from their website, while leaving links to all articles up?
"Obama took the case, known as ACORN vs. Edgar (the name of the Republican governor at the time) and we won. Obama then went on to run a voter registration project with Project VOTE in 1992 that made it possible for Carol Moseley Braun to win the Senate that year. Project VOTE delivered 50,000 newly registered voters in that campaign (ACORN delivered about 5,000 of them).
Since then, we have invited Obama to our leadership training sessions to run the session on power every year, and, as a result, many of our newly developing leaders got to know him before he ever ran for office. Thus it was natural for many of us to be active volunteers in his first campaign for STate Senate and then his failed bid for U.S. Congress in 1996. By the time he ran for U.S. Senate, we were old friends."
Not only does Foulkes boast of Obama's ACORN leadership training, but also makes it clear that Obama's post-law school organizing of "Project VOTE" in 1992 was undertaken in direct partnership with ACORN.
Hey, not bad.

Mona Sahlin, leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, confirmed that her party and the Greens want to form a coalition government in 2010. What kind of policy will such a government follow? Miljöpartiet de Gröna, the Swedish Green Party, state on their official website that the education system should start working for “gender equality” at an early age; children need counterweights to the gender roles which girls and boys are raised into. Therefore teachers and personnel in child care services must finish an education in equality before they are given their exams. They also want to abolish grades in schools:
“We want to do away with the grade system [in today’s schools]. Grades contribute considerably to stress and are not a fair and objective system of measuring the individual’s potential.”
The Green Party favor ideological Globalism in its purest form. They want a “world citizenship” to replace the national citizenship, totally free migration on a global basis, global taxes and a strengthened United Nations to ensure a just world order:

“We do not believe in artificial borders. We have a vision of unrestricted immigration and emigration, where people have the right to live and work wherever they please… We want Sweden to become an international role model by producing a plan to implement unrestricted immigration.”
They have a strong focus on anti-discrimination and racism, and desire harsh and swift penalties for “discrimination” yet soft penalties for many other crimes. They want “religiously neutral” holidays (no Christmas or Easter) and education against racism and discrimination to be taught in schools. No “bigotry” against any group of people (except whites presumably, and white men in particular) will be allowed, and all forms of bigotry should be banned by law regardless of where it is voiced. Among the forms of racism they specify should be aggressively stamped out is “Islamophobia.” However, they understand that racism cannot be totally stamped out until we have dismantled the “racist world order” and replaced it with a just world order where none suffer and the poor are no longer exploited.
The Swedish Green Party state explicitly that the concepts male and female are “socially constructed” and forced upon all human beings. In order to reach the new world order, it is paramount that all such artificial identities are broken down. This should be facilitated by the education system and specially trained teachers. They believe that “all human beings” should be free to choose whatever name they desire. By this they appear to mean “gender” as well. They want everything to be “gender neutral,” not only marriage ceremonies but identity cards.
I assume this means that I should be able to choose a female name on my identity card and that the state is oppressing me if it doesn’t allow this. Since employing artificial categories such as “male” and “female” contributes to upholding the exploitative world order of poverty and global warming, one must assume that children will starve in the Sudan if I cannot call myself “Mary” or “Christine” on my driver’s license. After all, I may have a penis, but it’s a socially constructed penis and it contributes to an unjust capitalist system.

IMHO, this is all an attempt to undermine the legality of the election. Obama or someone in his campaign briefly suggested a few days ago that he be allowed to take over immediately or govern with Bush after his (Obama’s) win, and I think this is all directed at doing exactly what happened in Kenya (an election campaign in which Obama was very much involved).
He needs to hit hard, often and more often. The truth is your friend McCain. Use it.

Don't Cry For Berlusconi Or Yourselves, Folks
I wouldn't get too freaked out about today's collapse on opening and the following upswing. Berlusconi had made a statement saying that market closings were being considered (the big boys would all have to do this in tandem), and that provoked a stampede to sell. He has since been turned over to the Dominicans, forced to publicly recant, and is now tied to a chair listening to the Vatican's bible reading and being treated with Valium.
I wouldn't worry too much about the real economy, either. Sit and watch oil prices drop and giggle instead. This is going to do more to support the real economy than all the wild proposals being offered.
A while back, I was getting heat from rightish folks who claimed that all the talk about a risky economy was hate speech by Dems. At the time I said (fairly enough) that maybe I was a gloomy cuss for the moment, but a time would come when I was about the only optimistic person out there.
For the first time, I feel some optimism. Cautious optimism, but optimism. My buying fingers are twitching and my stomach's settling, my toes are wiggling, and I'm grinning ear from ear.
Casey Serins and some investment bankers (the types that consult astrologists and spend a lot of time worrying about health fads) are about to get really poor, but the Rob Dawgs and Melissa Clouthiers of the world are going to get a chance at a very comfortable future. Manhattan has contracted a case of the shivers, but a bunch of small-town bankers are beginning to emerge from their bunkers.
I know it seems counter-intuitive, but for once the cards are being stacked on the side of the realists and future wealth. Yeah, yeah, if you look at your portfolio you look poorer, but that was always funny money and was never really there. We're very close to the ability to earn real money, the type that's there for you in the future.
Dated Brent Spot below $75, no, below $74. Wholesale heating oil $2.26, wholesale gas $1.86.
If you're not feeling the sparks of optimism, just ask yourself "In which world are the sales clerk, the waitress, the plumber, the truck driver, the secretary, the mechanic, store owner, small businessman, the car salesman and the computer tech going to do better?"
- World A: Crude oil going to $200 a barrel a la Goldman Sachs.
- World B: Crude oil going to well below $80 a barrel.
You guessed it! World B. World A only helped a few very rich people, among them persons with a huge stake in natural gas and politicians who wanted to save the world by starving poor people. World B is better for everyone else, including Wall Street stalwarts who did not spend the last few years consulting astrologists.
Nymex crude futures below $80. Any moment now Nancy Pelosi is going to figure out that natural gas is a fossil fuel, and then the face of American politics will be changed.

It contains no new bombshells in terms of factual revelations. Rather, it's just Steve Branchflower's opinion — after being hired and directed by one of Gov. Then President Bush and all of the Dem lemmings started crying about how we needed the bailout RIGHT NOW to avert a crisis. Now that everybody has caught on to that and are running from the stock market as fast as they can, they’re telling everyone not to panic.
O’Reilly is right. McCain should announce that Mitt will be his Treasury Secretary and Rudy Giuliani will be his Attorney General and they will ruthlessly pursue the CEOs and members of Congress that were knowingly responsible for this and prosecute them to the full extent of the law."

Barack H. Obama is running around telling everyone that the housing mortgage market collapsed primarily because of some vaguely described "deregulation" that took place sometime under George Bush--or maybe under Clinton; I'm not clear on that. I'm not sure he is.
Whatever his claim is, it's a lie.
The reality is that the housing market collapsed in large part because a coalition of race-baiting bullies brought very heavy pressure to bear on the banks to make more subprime loans on properties in low-income communities. Those who didn't approve the risky subprime loans were accused of "redlining"--i.e., refusing to make loans on properties in those neighborhoods.
Who were these bullies?

A friend of mine who is in the know on these kinds of things said, “On election night, keep a sharp eye on the Asian markets. The Asian markets, 12 hours ahead of us. If it looks like McCain’s going to win, you’re going to see the biggest rally you have ever seen. If it looks like Obama’s going to win, may not be much more damage, ‘cause by then, how much more damage will there be able to be inflicted?” I’m just, “Okay, okay, okay, okay.” I said this yesterday, and I believe this to be true today. It will be true for the remaining 25 days. This is an issue on which McCain can win. Frankly, my friends, I’m getting tired of everybody buying into this conventional wisdom notion that what’s happening to the market and the economy is an automatic win for Obama. Why? The only reason it’s an automatic win for Obama is ‘cause he’s not in power and the Bush administration and the Republicans are. And so the change factor comes in. But what the hell’s Obama going to do to this to fix it? He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s going to have some of his leftist radical buddies who are going to be his economic advisors telling him what to do.
