DUBOB 11- more tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast...
various links and websites | 01-31-03 | The Heavy Equipment Guy

Posted on 01/31/2003 5:07:21 PM PST by backhoe

At the request of members, I am restarting those "Tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast"-- the stories and issues that the press and media either ignore, won't even talk about, or will mention once and forevermore claim "it's old news..."

Naturally, some will be stories which interest me, or things I think we all need to be aware of.

I am experimenting with a minor change in presentation- when I can, I will cut to

-GoogleNewsBeta--

with a keyword or two and see what kind of links to "mainstream" stories I can find in contrast to what we see here and on other sites.

May I remind you of a couple of points to bear in mind?
Each link usually has many other links within- follow them all to get "the rest of the story."
Don't forget the "open multiple browsers" trick with control-n -- this allows you to hold your place with one, and use the others to follow links, run searches, etc.

Rather than go back and rehash old links, I'll give you links to the original posts here:

-DUBOB 10- the *best of* the Dark Underbelly Series--

-DUBOB 9-- even *more* tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast..... --

DUBOB 8-- still *more* tales from the Underbelly***

DUBOB 7-- even *more* tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast.....

A Marginal Tax Rate of 90%?

If you missed it, go read the whole post over at Instapundit (all emphasis mine):

I explained to [Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton)] that even people who make $150k in Northern Cal. are not “rich” and should not be taxed as if they were…I also expressed my concern that about half the people in the country now pay no income taxes, so there is overwhelming incentive for them to keep voting for democrats and therefore higher taxes for the rest of us. He told me that he thought tax rates should go up for the very rich and that the top marginal tax rate should be 90%. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, so I asked in a voice that many in the room could hear if he really meant 90%, and he said yes. Several people asked me after my turn was over if they heard correctly what he said, and were amazed when I said yes.

I also asked how a congress that was very critical of republican ethics and vowed “change” could justify letting Rangel, Dodd, and Murtha keep their committee chairmanships with their obvious ethical issues. His response was that Republican’s ethics were worse because of their “unjustified aggressive war”.

This is just my small example of the anger and frustration of people in liberal Northern California.

Read it all, and then take a look at this NY Times story from TEN years ago:

Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending
by STEVEN A. HOLMES
Published: September 30, 1999

In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.

The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets — including the New York metropolitan region — will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.

Fannie Mae, the nation’s biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.

In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980’s.

”From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,” said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ”If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.”

Wait - doesn’t this same newspaper show President Bush warning Congress in 2003 that Fannie and Freddie needed some overhauling to prevent a crisis when the housing bubble burst? Didn’t the Bush Administration ask for action numerous times?

Seems they did. What was the response of the spineless GOP and feckless Democrats? Oh yes….now I remember:

“Fannie and Freddie are fundamentally sound.”

“They are not in danger of going under….We’re doing three separate things that make it much less likely — very, very unlikely — that we’ll have this kind of a housing crisis six months or a year from now.”

“Looking at the financials, they’re solid.”
— Banking Committee Chairman Barney Frank, (D, Massachusetts) July 14, 2008

“We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac, and particularly at Fannie Mae, under the outstanding leadership of Franklin Raines…What we need to do today is to focus on the regulator, and this must be done in a manner so as not to impede their affordable housing mission.”
— Maxine Waters, (D, California)

Questioned by former congressman Chris Shays, Republican of Connecticut, about Fannie’s teensy 3 percent capital cushion, Raines said of the multi- and single-family loans the company holds: “These assets are so riskless that capital for holding them should be under 2 percent.”

Look where we were in May of 2008, and consider what happened in June of that year.

The whole nation is trembling under the weight of a bill that Congressman McNerney (of the 90% marginal tax rate) admits he voted for unread. It’s a bill they all voted for, unread. It’s the bill the President pushed through with cries of doom and moral imperative and then waited four days to sign - not because he wanted to read the thing, but because he wanted to take his wife out to dinner, shoot some hoops and otherwise occupy himself.

This economic emergency has its root in a policy that allowed people to sign contracts they either did not read or could not fulfill, and the elected “leadership” of the country has decided they can “fix” that problem by voting for and signing a bill they did not read and likely should not fulfill. Oh, irony.

Let’s keep up with the growing tea party movements. Insty is also updating with pictures and links here and here.

Malkin has more and here is a how to throw your own tea party guide.

I think it’s all interesting, and I would hope to see something a bit more organized like a march on Washington, but let’s face it, the pro-lifers march in DC every year - tens of thousands of them - and they get ZERO media coverage. For a DC march to force some coverage, it would have to number in the millions.

But if these little tea parties can encourage millions…well, that might be something.

Also, the White House amused by Rick Santelli, and trying to use him for cover - or something.

Charles Johnson: ‘Honour Killings None of Our Business’

Charles is really exposing his true colours in this post. He is now attacking Pam Geller and Robert Spencer for daring to show a little compassion and common decency to a Muslim girl murdered by her father and brother. Charles’ response, in his own words:

charlesquote

Like others who are clueless about the religion of peace, Charles ignorantly insists the intent of Pam and Robert is for selfish gain. It is not.

In Islam, a woman who supposedly shames her family not only has her life taken, but also her memory. Every attempt is made to erase her existence, thus, the shame. That includes an unmarked grave.

What Pam and Robert have attempted is to sustain Aqsa Parvez’s memory with a simple headstone that reads, “Beloved, Remembered, Free.” It isn’t political, it isn’t anti-Islam, and it doesn’t serve to personally benefit either Pam or Robert.

It is just a reminder that Aqsa Parvez’s life did matter, even if her family, by virtue of their inhumane and cold ideology, doesn’t agree. It is also a gesture to remind ourselves that we will not devalue any life, and that we fight to defend all innocent life.

Yet, according to Charles, a young girl abused and murdered, both in life and in death, is none of our business. That we are “disgusting” for caring. It is only the prerogative of the family that committed this horrendous crime that matters. Ironically, that very same mentality - the mentality that certain individuals, usually women, are the sole property of male family members - is what fuels human rights abuses throughout the world.

Charles, what is truly vile is your cavalier attitude towards this murdered young girl. You want to assist her family in erasing her memory. In some ways, that makes you culpable in the ‘honour killing’ of Aqsa Parvez. That is absolutely disgusting.

Rep. Kanjorski: $550 Billion Disappeared in "Electronic Run On the Banks"
"On Thursday Sept 15, 2008 at roughly 11 AM The Federal Reserve
noticed a tremendous draw down of money market accounts in the USA
to the tune of $550 Billion dollars in a matter of an hour or two.
Money was being removed electronically.
The treasury tried to help with $150 Billion.
But could not stem the tide.
It was an electronic run on the banks
The treasury intervened but had they not closed down the accounts
they estimated that by 2 PM that afternoon.
Within 3 hours. $5.5 Trillion would have been withdrawled
and collapsed and within 24 hours the world economy."

FLASHBACK: from 9/15/08:

“U.S. President George W. Bush said Monday he is confident
that the markets are resilient and can deal with the latest financial blows.
“We are working to reduce disruptions and minimize the impact
these financial market developments on the broader economy.” ...

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama
said eight years of Bush “brought us the most serious financial crisis
since the Great Depression.”

His Republican rival said John McCain said he was happy the
federal government decided not to use taxpayer dollars to bail out Lehman Brothers.”

How did Obama know THEN
that we would experience the ‘most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression’
when those who did not plan the takeover would not know for three more months?

Orlando Tea Party Update

SOME ADVICE ON FUTURE “TEA PARTY” PROTESTS, from a media producer who attended the Overland Park affair:

I attended the invigorating protest outside Congressman Dennis Moore’s Overland Park, Kansas office yesterday.

I hoped 10-15 souls might show up. I was thrilled to see hundreds. Here are some suggestions. I don’t really want my name used. Sadly, it could really hurt my business, which is already hurting.

As a professional media producer, here are my concerns:

1. Incoherent message - the signs were all over the place. There were lots of agendas. That’s fine. The color and signage look good on TV.

But, when it came to the microphone - the overall message was tepid and unsure.

2. Create a theme - like “We want Senator So-and-So to resign for voting for this bill.” Or, “We want the Stimulus Repealed!” “Start Over.” Have a definitive purpose to your Assembly. A central theme will also help public speakers to focus. And don’t be afraid to personalize this. Put it on your Senators, Congress people, and the President. That’s what they are doing to anyone who objects.

3. Speakers not prepared for the media - the organizer was asked to name some specific objectionable items in the stimulus. She couldn’t do it. I doubt many of us could.

If you are an organizer, or the “face” of the event - take an hour to prepare. You don’t need to know everything about the stimulus. Just find 2 or 3 things - hard facts - you can point to and credibly say - these are wrong, wasteful spending items. Or, these items grow government, not the economy. It is critical.

4. Pass out talking points, just in case Joe or Jane Protestor gets buttonholed by a reporter.

5. This is all about image. If we don’t present the media with a professional, organized and, unfortunately, scripted image, they are going to make their own, and it won’t be favorable.

6. Recruit some help to pack the area around people being interviewed for background. God love the guy in the crazy Uncle Sam suit, and we certainly need the Minute Men, but these folks will quickly become THE story because they are colorful or controversial i.e., Good TV. Welcome their support. Maybe give them a minute on the mic. But I recommend trying to pack in mainstream, boring looking, and diverse Americans around the camera. No offense to anyone. Anytime a TV camera comes out, a certain number and type of attention seeker will flock to it. Now is the time for Grandma and Grandpa, the Plumber, the Young Executive, and the Homeschooling Mom to flock to the camera as background. Don’t be shy. Remember, how do you want your cause to be presented by the media? As crazies? Or as Concerned Neighbors?

7. Have an Agenda and a Time. We’re going to Assemble at this Time. We’re going to have a Sign-In Table. We’re going to have a Sign-Making Area. We’re going to have speakers at 10:30. We’re going to March to the Senator’s Office at this time and demand she resign. We’re going to end with Chants, and a Call-to-Action for the next Protest. That, and Protestors want to know what’s going on. If they become unsure, they leave. Organization wins, and it also intimidates the opposition. And the opposition is going to start showing up.

8. Share the Day’s Agenda with the Media. You have to create your own press. The event in Overland Park was HUGE, but only one news station came out to cover it, and there’s not even a photo in today’s Sunday paper. Sell it to them. They love good stories.

That’s it. I hope this helpful. These things are only going to get bigger, and people need to realize that a great responsibility comes with this wonderful opportunity. Get a Message. And Get It Out.

HOPE AND CHANGE: Poll: 3 out of 4 Americans are scared about state of the country. Well, change, anyway.

Plus, “Yep, I miss Bush.”

“TEA PARTY” UPDATE: Taxpayers coming together.

NOW THEY’RE ORGANIZING AN Orlando Tea Party for March.

IN DENVER: Conservatives plan stimulus ‘tea party’ protest at state Capitol. Actually, I think there are quite a few libertarians involved, too.

BOB KRUMM ON the true meaning of “the stimulus.” “It’s not about fixing the economy; it’s about proving Reagan wrong. It’s about proving that an enlightened government is superior to a country led by tens of millions of individual sovereign decision makers.” The Dow says it’s not proving out so far . . .

Read the whole thing.

UPDATE: Charles Krauthammer: “The markets are responding remarkably, exquisitely, sensitively to political events, much more in than in the past. And the reason is for the last year we have had huge intervention of the government in the markets and the banks, in autos. So it is not just a reaction to economic news, but to what’s happening in Washington.”

Stocks have now fallen to 1997 levels. Not much of a confidence vote from the markets.

ANOTHER UPDATE: “Is it any wonder the markets continue to sink?”

MORE: Dan Riehl: “It’s impossible to watch Obama maneuver since taking the WH without characterizing his behavior as divisive and dishonest. Unfortunately, taking it all in, it’s clear that one of two things must be true. The Obama administration along with key Democrat players in Congress are either incompetent, or willing to risk a genuine Depression for political gain.”

I’m going with incompetent — though putting Joe Biden in charge of the stimulus does suggest actual malice . . .

Santelli’s Manifesto: Why He Called for a ‘Tea Party’.

HERE’S A SCHEDULE OF “TEA PARTY” PROTESTS around the nation.

How to Flush a Market

down-drain.gif

IBD offers up a list of market killers ... many brought to you via the new socialist overlords in the US of A. Keep in mind, that there will be no recovery until the "investor", be it Jack with his $5000 TFSA, or Jill, with her $10 million porfolio, decide to play ball again.

A Sample:

• Newsweek, a prominent national newsweekly, blares from its cover "We Are All Socialists Now," without a hint of recognition that socialism in its various forms has been repudiated by history — as communism's collapse in the USSR, Eastern Europe and China attest.

Even so, a $787 billion "stimulus," along with a $700 billion bank bailout, $75 billion to refinance bad mortgages, $50 billion for the automakers, and as much as $2 trillion in loans from the Fed and the Treasury are hardly confidence-builders for our free-enterprise system.

• Talk of "nationalizing" U.S.' troubled major banks comes not just from tarnished Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, but also from Republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and former Fed chief Alan Greenspan.

To be sure, bank shares have plunged along with home prices, and many have inadequate capital. But is nationalization really the only solution for an industry whose main product — loans to consumers and businesses — has expanded by over 5% annually so far this year?

You are Now Entering the Twilight Zone

From WUWT:

94% of the carbon in the atmosphere has the same isotopic signature as the natural background. 6% is of an organic origin, fossil fuels included. Half of that organic source, 3% is what the IPCC itself says man is contributing.

[...]

President Barack Obama’s climate czar said Sunday the Environmental Protection Agency will soon issue a rule on the regulation of carbon dioxide, finding that it represents a danger to the public.

The White House is pressing Congress to draft and pass legislation that would cut greenhouse gases by 80% of 1990 levels by 2050, threatening to use authority under the Clean Air Act if legislators don’t move fast enough or create strong enough provisions.

... and from the comments:

“It’s politically motivated, scientifically unjustified and legally ridiculous” said tallbloke, chief of himself, a contributor on Whats Up With That. “Co2 a pollutant? Are they on this earth or fullers?” He added.

A representative of the Union of rhizomes, foodcrops, artichokes, cacti and triffids UR-FACT said the measure to remove co2 from the atmosphere “amounted to the mass murder of all photosynthesising lifeforms”.

Vegetable Supremo Carol Browner was “unavailable for comment”.

[...]

This is good news. Instead of limiting themselves to 60 second ads, OpEd pieces, PR releases, scare headlines, movies and pictorial spreads in national magazines, the anti-CO2 folks will have to come up with real numbers showing what power plants will be shuttered, what industries will be crippled, where the windmills and power lines will be built, how much the solar collectors will cost and how the mass transit will be paid for. Real activity to be paid for with real money and real changes in how people live. Moaning and complaining is easy. Cutting carbon isn’t just hard, it’s impossible without unacceptable sacrifice and expense.

Zimbabwean Unity Govt. Seizes White-Owned Farms

In 2001 hundreds of people fled white-owned farms. (BBC)

The unity government in Zimbabwe just took over another 77 white-owned farms.
There are 400 white-owned farms left in the country of Zimbabwe.
The BBC reported:

Scores of white-owned farms in Zimbabwe have been invaded since the country's national unity government took office, a union chief has told the BBC.

Commercial Farmers Union President Trevor Gifford said 77 properties had been occupied in the last fortnight.

MPs, police, the military and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe officials had taken part in the invasions, he said.

Many of the farmers targeted recently mounted a successful legal challenge to government land reforms, he added.

The BBC attempted to contact a number of officials from President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party - including the ministers of agriculture and lands - but no-one was available to comment on the farmers' union claims.
The Telegraph says 100 farms were seized.

Thanks Barry... Consumer Index Hits Record Lows- Stock Market Reaches Pre-Bush 1997 Levels

We are now officially looking at a Barry Market:

Stock markets tanked today to pre-Bush levels.
Thanks Barry.

Major stock market indexes fell to 1997 levels today.
Breitbart reported:

Investors' sagging confidence has pulled the major stock market indexes to their lowest levels in nearly 12 years.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell to April 1997 levels Monday, while the Dow Jones industrial average reached its levels of October 1997 as investors succumbed to their growing worries about a recession that has no end in sight.

Most financial stocks were pounded even as government agencies led by the Treasury Department said they will launch a revamped bank rescue program that includes the option of increasing government ownership in financial institutions without having to pour more taxpayer money into them.
Also, the Rasmussen consumer index dropped to record lows today as well.
The Patriot Room reported:

The Rasmussen Consumer Index, which measures consumer confidence on a daily basis, fell two points on Monday to 55.5. That’s the lowest level of confidence ever recorded in the seven-year history of the Consumer Index, and the fourth time a new low has been set this month.

The Rasmussen Investor Index fell nearly four points on Monday to 56.9, also a record low. For the Investor Index, the previous low had been established in mid-December.
But, don't worry... Joe Biden was just put in the role of stimulus czar.
Everything will be fine.

UPDATE: Harry Reid: "The Economy Is Turning Around"

KMOV TV Announces St. Louis Tea Party At the Arch -- Friday at 11:00 AM (Video)

A local St. Louis TV Channel announced the planned "Tea Party" protest this Friday at the steps of the St. Louis Arch on the Mississippi River.

KMOV reported:

Those upset with the stimulus bill are preparing a Boston Tea Party of sorts.

This St. Louis Tea Party is one of many planned around the country and it all started with an anchor's rant on the business network CNBC.
The protest against the Obama Generational Theft Act is Friday at 11 AM at the steps of the St. Louis Gateway Arch.

Bill Hennessey organized the rally.
It was announced Sunday on The Dana Show on 97.1 FM. Patrick Leahy of Top Conservatives on Twitter and Dana discussed this Tea Party wave.

When I was a small child, 25 cents would buy you a hot dog and a small coke at the dinette counter in Ward's drugstore in the Village... and since I didn't get an allowance in those early days, I scavenged empty coke bottles on the beach where I lived. A penny a piece, when returned to the local bottling company on the mainland.

Once I had 25 of them, I'd haul my bat-tow ( can't figure out how to spell it, just know what we called it-- 4 foot beam, 10 feet long, my Dad built it for me... ) to the water ( yep, the Atlantic Ocean, sharks and bottle-nosed dolphins, barracuda and jellyfish, and Europe 3,000 miles east if you could row hard enough... ) and row to The Pier in The Village.

Tie up to a piling at the only ladder going up to the deck- 10 or 15 feet off the water, depending on the tide, no guardrails, no safety cage, and half the boards were loose or rotten. Haul my stuff up, then go to Ward's, exchange the bottles for a quarter, and have lunch.

It was a good way for a boy to live.

Pity about some modern kids- they aren't really living.

I'm reminded of a tale from that Island I grew up on, off the coast...

Back in the mid-nineties, the County Commissioners ( yes, we called them “Commissars,” with much the same disdain towards them the wards of the former Soviet Union showed towards theirs... ) decided, in their infinite wisdom and power to levy fines and taxes, to “introduce recycling to the Island...”

Heretofore, the garbage trucks came to your house or business one a week, but in the Name of the Great God “ecology,” henceforth you would gather up your wet trash ( garbage ), your dry trash ( papers ), and all that good stuff that was worth money ( aluminum cans ), and hie yourself to the old Air National Guard Armory at the airport in the center of the Island.

There, you would separate this stinking pile into groups that went into color-coded bins, to be moved by those formerly convenient Garbage Trucks, to the mainland, where these offerings would be laid upon the Altar of the Great God Ecology, and be “recycled...”

And all in the land were self-righteous and smug, that They Were Doing A Good Thing, For The Environment...”

Now there's a little background you need to know--

1)- that the county had, formerly, only one designated landfill, where trash was hauled, on Cate Road, and it was a vasty, and smelly pit, filled with the detritus of the multitudes of The Island, the other islands, and the mainland, where a bulldozer labored day and night to bury the stuff.

2)- many who live in this area are old, or disabled, or retired, and lugging, and separating this “stuff” was a mighty task-- I well remember seeing the lines of seniors, some on canes or in walkers, struggling to get their trash out of cars, across the parking lot, and in to the correct bins.
And yes, there were fines and penalties if, Woe! You put the wrong trash in the wrong colored bin...

3)- but some- my own Evil Right-Wing Self included-- viewed all this “with great suspicion” ( to quote the Sage Winnie Ther Poo... ) and wonder if we really were Doing The Right Thing for the Great God of Ecology, or were we just being jerked around by a pile of self-righteous bureaucrats...

Well, Lo! One day a reporter happened to act on this suspicion, and actually followed the line of garbage trucks making the pilgrimage to the Great God's Altar, and what did he find?

The same pit...

The same bulldozer...

And all that carefully and painfully separated trash...

going in to the same borrow pit. Just like it always had.

No recycling...

Yes, he took pictures and wrote a story, and yes, every sitting Commissar lost his/her seat in the next election.

Health Care Costs to Top $8,000 Per Person... Stimulus Bill Costs to Top $27,599

$8,000-- What the media tells you:
The AP conveniently dropped this article today before the Obama's speech tonight on expanding the federal government to "overhaul" or consume healthcare:

A new government report on medical costs paints a stark picture for President Obama, who is expected to call for a health care overhaul in a speech Tuesday night to a joint session of Congress.

Even before lawmakers start debating how care is delivered to the American people, the report shows the economy is making the job of reform harder.

Health care costs will top $8,000 per person this year, consuming an ever-bigger slice of a shrinking economic pie.
$27,599-- What the media won't tell you:
The average citizen can expect to pay the government $27,599 - one person's personal bailout burden over the long haul- to repay back the money Democrats are borrowing this year.
Right.org explains how you can win that $27,599 back:
But, of course, with the way democrats are spending, this total could skyrocket.

It's no wonder Democratic Missouri Governor Jay Nixon admits that your children and grandkids will be paying this debt off.

Obama bashes the American people, *drink*

Obama "I don't believe in bigger government." A lie- *drink* twice

Obama's tax cuts will begin on April Fools Day. That's fitting.

Some are skeptical whether this gigantic Generational Theft Act will work.
That's why Joe Biden is the Spendulus czar-- Nobody messes with Joe.

The cameras are now focusing on tax cheat Timothy Geithner as Obama talks about credit and banking crisis.

Energy--
China has launched the largest effort to make their country energy independent(?)
It is time for America to lead again in green energy initiatives.
We will double the nation's supply of renewable energy in the next 3 years.
We will lay down thousands of miles of power lines.
(This will cost billions.)

Obama introduces cap and trade. What a horrible idea.
This will cost America millions of jobs.

Health Care--
We can no longer afford to put healthcare reform on hold.
It's time.
Congress already passed legislation to cover children who's parents work fulltime (and make up to $80K a year)
Obama says he will seek a cure for cancer in our time.
Comprehensive healthcare reform. It's a step we must take to bring down our deficit(?)
Healthcare reform cannot wait another year.

Education--
Every child will have access to a complete and competitive education from the day they are born to the day they are ready to enter the work force.
Obama asks every American for one year or more of a post high school education.

REPUBLICANS APPLAUD to the promise to not leave deficit to our children. A lie!
A plan free of Earmarks --- A HUGE LIE!
The democrats are shameless. Absolutely shameless.
We will cut weapons systems.
We will end tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas.

We will end tax breaks for rich.
He's full of it. Your tax cut checks are on the way.

Obama will regain your trust.
No longer will we hide the price of war.
(Was it really hidden?)
By the way... Democrats have already spent twice as much as the cost of the War in Iraq already.

I am closing Gitmo. Living our values makes us safer.
The United States of America does not torture. *drink*

Hope is found in unlikely places.
Obama talks about Greensburg Kansas... That rings a bell.

Surprise... As his speech ends, the cut and runner does not mention any military heroes.

UPDATE: Paul at Power Line called it, "Obama's magical mystery tour."

John at Power Line is not so kind:

The problem with governing is that he will now have to take responsibility for his decisions. Obama is committed to policies that will damage our economy, run up trillions of dollars in debt, increase taxes, cause inflation, make the nation less competitive, feed unproductive Democratic Party constituencies at the expense of the "real" economy, and make the United States weaker abroad. He can give any number of speeches, and Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and their cohorts will applaud. But reality will not yield so easily.
Well said.

It's Official! Obama Is More Popular Than Jesus, New Poll Reveals; VIDEO: Obama La Bamba Spoof

State Of The Union Verdict: BOOOO

This was such an obvious political stump speech, that about all I could do was laugh.

Pelosi looked like she had just wet her britches when Obama turned and looked at her. Those looks of adoration, and obviously the realization on her part that this was such a momentous occasion, left me thinking the whole lot of them back there were about as shallow as a wading pool that was one mile square with one gallon of water in it.

Obama’s popularity is already tanking big-time, and so it was that he had to get his chums together and play tea party, uh no State of the Union, or more like State of MY UNION.

His trip down the isle, and back out of the chamber was pure idolatry on parade. “Oh, he’s such a rock star!”

No, he’s a spoiled brat that hasn’t had it explained to him yet, that he’s not all that. We don’t celebrate Marxists here B.O.

So what's more offensive? The moral outrage of Pamela Geller at the westernization of "honor killing"? Or the mainstream coverage by a politically correct media? Here's what the lunchtime poll at Toronto's CITY-TV thought was the big issue arising from Aqsa Parvez's murder:

Obama's test: a nation of Santellis

I saw part of the speech and the gushing media response here in Afghanistan on AFN.

I had to walk out because I was so disgusted. We are waltzing right into national socialism and Obama is smiling all the way to absolute power.

EVERYTHING the left projected onto President Bush is being shown in full effect now. I am watching my country being turned into a socialist police state from afar.

Now the left defines “patriotism” as “pay your taxes and shut up because you lost”. So when the left is in power, “patriotism” is unquestioning obedience and slavery to them. In the 80s, there was a bumper sticker that said “question authority”. Under Clinton, we learned that sticker had a rider: “except when the left is in power.” That rider is in full effect again.

When the left lost by landslides, they DEMANDED that the conservatives share power and the republicans let them have their way like idiots. Now the left has a near super-majority (with RINOs) and we conservatives are told to ‘shut up or else’.

Now we have an Administration that goes after ALL critics (plumbers to radio hosts to news anchors/stock traders) BY NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yet the “anti-establishment” leftists are all for this. Why am I surprised, their playbook is right out of Marx/Hitler/Alinsky/Mao. Socialists all.

My tagline is proven yet again.

Obama Removes the Mask

President Obama’s speech Tuesday night should put to rest the argument as to who he really is. He revealed plans so sweeping and so expensive that, if they came to pass, we would permanently refashion the role of the federal government in the lives of every American.

During the campaign certain Republicans and libertarians tried to convince us Obama was a moderate, a sort of Bill Clinton “third way” reformer — and certainly no radical as conservatives claimed. Conservatives remained skeptical. Then during the transition, the debate as to Obama’s political philosophy continued. He sprinkled his cabinet with sober figures and experienced economic gurus. So perhaps he was moderate in outlook and restrained in ambition.

Next came the stimulus plan. Yes, he delegated the entire enterprise to Nancy Pelosi and the liberal draftsmen in Congress. But perhaps this was an error in judgment, a departure from what he “really” wanted in order to achieve a stimulus plan.

Well, the mystery has been solved. Obama is an unalloyed and extreme liberal....

Obama Speech Gets a Big "F" for Focus Group and Fact Check (Lapse)

Obama counting on cap-and-trade

My Muslim President Obama (Why members of the Islamic faith see him as one of the flock.)

THE SPEECH

Yeah .. I watched it. There was no doubt that President Barack Obama was going to do a great job of delivering a speech. That's his forte. So, how do you judge a great speech? By the delivery or by the content? On delivery President Smooth Talker gets an A.

On content? Well, if you're a believer in big government; if you big on wealth envy; if you think that government does everything well and private businesses do everything poorly; if you think that banks are the focus of all that is evil in the modern world; if you don't believe that Islamic terrorism is a true threat to our safety .. in short, if you believe that America is great because of government, then the speech gets an A as well. If, on the other hand, you believe that America is great because of the dynamic created by free people working under the rule of law in a system based on economic liberty ... then the speech a D --- D for demagogue.

As I was watching the speech I opened a Word document. I just sat there typing when the mood hit. Here - unedited - are the notes I made as President Smooth Talker was doin' his thang. Remember ... this is real time ... and I had a little Bailey's on the rocks sitting there next to me.

Aisle Birds .. particularly noxious political beasts.

Start out with positive note ... we will rebuild, we will recover. No more of this catastrophe stuff .. he has his stimulus bill, so the fear tactics go by the wayside. Transfer wealth to the wealthy? "Instead of investing in our future." Let's get some of that bash the rich stuff in right here at the get go

Banks and lenders pushed bad loans. No mention that the government virtually forced these banks and lenders to push those bad loans. CRI ...

No doubt .. he's a smooth speaker. One of the best.

One of the hardest things about watching the speech is having to look at that insipid Nancy Pelosi over Obama's left shoulder. Where else would she be?

There he goes with that 95% of working households getting a tax cut. They aren't tax cuts .. you get tax cuts if you pay taxes. Many of these people do not. These are income transfer checks ... sometimes called welfare. We've changed the language ... welfare becomes a tax cut.

The sight of tax cheat Timothy Geithner is infuriating as well.

Talks of banks being fearful of lending. How is the cramdown legislation going to help that?

New lending fund. Auto loans, college loans ... business loans. Funded by the evil rich, of course.

Housing plan to help "responsible" borrowers. Yeah ... let's see if all of these "responsible" borrowers are worthy. No mention of cramdown.

When we learn that a bank has major problems we will hold accountable those who created those problems. Does that mean Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and others in the congress are going to be beaten?

All about holding banks accountable. How about holding the politicians who told the banks to make the bad loans accountable.

Nice little slam against CEOs ... private jets. "Those days are over." CEOs are demons ... evil people who have created this problem for all of us.

Memo to members: Just SIT DOWN, for God's sake.

"Everyone suffering in part because of their (banks) bad decisions." Government played no role here? All these evil banks?

Really played up this angle about banks being the face of evil in America.

Thus far this speech seems to paint government as good, corporate America as evil.

Wants more regulation. Refine the rules of the road. Wait! Isn't that what we did with Sarbanes-Oxley.

Charles Rangel is a mouth-breather.

Hey, John Kerry. Why the long face?

Obama's budget is going to be a "vision for America." How nice. I thought the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were visions for America. Now they'll be replaced by Obama's budget.

Trying to think of something positive to say about Obama other than his speaking ability.

Well, he really seems to refrain from playing the race card. Some are saying that a state rejecting stimulus funds is racist .. he doesn't go there.

SIT DOWN, dammit! We're here to hear the president speak, not to watch you fools jumping up and down.

Market-based cap on carbon pollution ... here you go. Trust me on this ... the government is going to find a way to make money on this one. This is a tax plan in the making.

Automakers ... years of bad decision making. "We will not protect them from their own bad practices." The problem here is only the automakers. No mention of the role that labor unions played in bringing these automakers to their knees.

America did not invent the automobile.

"This is America. We don't do what's easy. We do what's necessary." Damn, this guy is good. President Smooth Talker.

Mentions health costs as a major reason why corporations move "our jobs" overseas.

Doesn't mention our second-highest-in-the-world corporate income tax as a reason. BTW .. the jobs belong to the corporations, not the workers.

"Complete and competitive education?" What does he mean by competitive. Does this mean that he's for school choice and that schools will have to compete for students? Hardly. This is the man who called vouchers a fraud.

Ask every American to commit to one more year of education .. community college ... training. Something. Now I liked this. Good idea. But then comes the spending ... Oh yeah, we'll provide the support. That means money. Why can't he just ask for the commitment?

Obama wants to promise a higher education for anyone who will just do a bit of national service.

Called out parents to be responsible for their children's education. Another good point.

Uh oh ... here come the tax increases. Talking about leaving children a debt they cannot pay. Time to soak the rich.

"With the deficit we inherited." You just knew the "inherited" word was going to come along. Well, he has a point. Thank you, Republicans. Of course he is going to double the deficit .... So the GOP doesn't take all of the blame.

Eliminate no-bid contracts that have wasted billions in Iraq. Didn't mention that this process was begun under Clinton. Do we want to wait for a bidding process when materials and support are needed in a theatre of war?

Restore a sense of fairness and balance in our tax code by ending tax breaks for corporations who send our jobs overseas. Those jobs aren't "our jobs." The jobs belong to the corporations.

"If your family earns less than $250,000 a year you will not see your taxes increase a single dime." Mebbe so ... but you may see your job go away.

Here he goes with that "tax cut for 95% of working families" nonsense again. Not tax cuts ... they're mostly welfare checks.

Tax free universal savings accounts for all Americans, huh? Let me guess ... somehow I get the feeling that the government is going to fund these savngs accounts with taxpayer dollars from the evil rich.

Know what? I could be in bed right now if these clowns would stop the stand-up-and-give-Obama the claps bit.

Mentioned "terrorists" several times. Never heard the first part of that word: "Islamic"

M1Tanker:

I know I have been away. I am a Battered American serving in the US Army in Afghanistan. I have been ridiculed, lied about, and betrayed by the left for the entire US offensive portion of the GWOT (we were on the defensive/ignore it until 9-11-01). That is 7 years of being slandered and having the enemy propaganda reported by the left as “fact”.

We are now facing a resurgent Taliban that thinks since they “won” the US elections that they will “win” the war and destroy us. I am seeing the surge in Afghanistan CUT IN HALF even as the new administration lies about it and says they are doing what president Bush did not (Bush wanted 30k troops to go, Obama is at 17k).

I am watching, with a heavy heart, the rapid implementation of a National Socialist totalitarian police state in America under the leadership of the SAME people who projected and mislabeled conservatives like myself “NAZIs”.

I have seen a White House that goes after critics BY NAME during press conferences and doing who know what else with federal level investigators into those critics. I have seen an administration who tells gun owners that they have nothing to fear and already has several bills in place to eradicate civilian gun ownership and violate the 2nd Amendment.

I watch in horror as the left pushed a totally unqualified person into power based on race. A person whose character and connections disqualify him from obtaining a security clearance through normal channels. The left slanders MLK’s “Dream” of men being judged by character, not color. I see Lincoln slandered by totalitarian socialists who forget that Republicans put into place the first minority and female 4 Star Generals, the first black Chairman JCS, the first black and black female Sec of State (who the left call all sorts of racist and hateful names), the first Hispanic AG, had more than a few primary Presidential candidates (that the left slandered) and several other ‘firsts’ that the left spit on. I watch a totally unqualified, shady, Chicago political machine operative use a cult of personality to push his dreams of absolute power and quell ALL dissent. I see a national socialist President who says that people who work hard, save, and desire to keep their earnings are “making a virtue out of selfishness”!!!

I watch “patriotism” change from the conservative view of “defend you fellow people against aggression and not giving aid to our barbaric enemies nor stabbing our defenders in the back with lies” to the left’s view of “pay your taxes and shut up (or else)”.

I read the “news” (opinion) coming from the media as they gush about how great the new President is and how the Sec of State is going around bashing the former US President and “apologizing” for freeing millions and standing up for liberty. She then goes to such bastions of liberty like Indonesia (where Christians are burned and have acid poured on them) and China to promise closer ties and holding those nations up as virtuous!!!! The complete LACK of character and maturity from the left as they quest for absolute power is disgusting!!!!

I have heard these leftist cult followers with their “tingles up their leg” feelings (not thoughts) as they compare this President to one who served in the 1930s. Well, they are partially correct in a few ways:

1. FDR's policies failed and put us on the road to dependence and socialism. Likewise, lawyers who sued banks and forced them to loan money to those who could not/would not ever pay, took money from Freddy Mac/Fanny Mae and several other banking companies, and then BLOCKED all attempts by republicans to fix the problems, are NOW IN POWER and will soon control those banks. The socialists are going to “nationalize” the banking and then other industries. FDR's failed dream come true.

2. But Obama, his corrupt ilk, and his cult followers DO remind me of a socialist government in the 1930s. They remind me of Germany and reinforce my tag line. The tag line that has not changed in almost a decade of being on FR. The tag line that the left goes out to prove daily.

Back to being a Battered American before the “Civilian National Security Force” starts asking questions.

Obama Has Nearly Tripled Debt "Bush Left Him" Already

"There is, of course, another responsibility we have to our children. And that is the responsibility to ensure that we do not pass on to them a debt they cannot pay. With the deficit we inherited, the cost of the crisis we face, and the long-term challenges we must meet, it has never been more important to ensure that as our economy recovers, we do what it takes to bring this deficit down."

President Obama
Address to Joint Session of Congress
February 24, 2009
You have to admit.
The man has nerve.
Democrats want to push the blame for the enormous national debt on George W. Bush.
But, in reality, Obama and Democrats will likely quadruple the national debt in the first few months of their rule:

Chart via RedState

And, despite the headlines about cutting debt--
They want to spend much more of your money on their pet projects.

By the way... Democrats have already spent twice as much as the cost of the War in Iraq.
They are likely to spend 6 times as much as the total cost of the Iraq War this before they are through with their bailouts.
The "deficit they inherited" is a drop in the bucket to what they are doing to this economy.
But, don't expect the media to point this out.

House Passes $410B In New Spending

February 25th, 2009

From an elated Associated Press:

House OKs $410B bill to boost domestic programs

WASHINGTON – The Democratic-controlled House approved $410 billion legislation Wednesday that boosted domestic programs, bristled with earmarks and chipped away at policies left behind by the Bush administration. The vote was 245-178, largely along party lines.

Republicans assailed the measure as too costly — particularly on the heels of a $787 billion stimulus bill that President Barack Obama signed last week. But Democrats jabbed back.

"The same people who drove the economy into the ditch are now complaining about the size of the tow truck," said Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., pointing out the large increase in deficits that President George W. Bush and GOP-controlled Congresses amassed…

Overall, the legislation would provided increases of roughly 8 percent for the federal agencies it covered, about $32 billion more than last year

After persuading lawmakers to keep earmarks off the stimulus bill, Obama made no such attempt on the first non-emergency spending measure of his presidency. The result was that lawmakers claimed billions in federal funds for pet projects — a total of 8,570 earmarks at a cost of $7.7 billion, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense. Majority Democrats declined to provide a number of earmarks, but said the cost was far smaller, $3.8 billion, 5 percent less than a year ago.

Among the earmarks was one sponsored by Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., who secured $200,000 for a "tattoo removal violence outreach program" in Los Angeles. Aides said the money would pay for a tattoo removal machine that could help gang members or others shed visible signs of their past, and anyone benefiting would be required to perform community service

Democrats also inserted a provision into the bill to end a program that allows students in the District of Columbia to use federal funds to attend private schools of their choice…

We are watching a Rodney King riots scale looting of the US treasury.

And they aren’t just looting from us, but from those not yet born.

"The same people who drove the economy into the ditch are now complaining about the size of the tow truck," said Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass.

Clearly they are as shameless as they are brazen.

They are trying to drive a stake through the heart of capitalism in America.

And just might succeed.

A Major Doctrinal Shift For Republicans?

Here's a report that there may be a major shift coming for the Republican Party.
Byron York wrote about it today in the DC Examiner:

I just got off the phone with a very plugged-in Republican strategist who told me that Republican reaction to President Obama's speech, which the party will roll out in the next few days, will mark the beginning of a new GOP approach to opposing the president's initiatives. (No, Bobby Jindal's ineffective response was not part of that new approach -- everyone seems a little embarrassed about that.) The Republican leadership in the House has concluded that in the stimulus debate, the GOP succeeded in dominating a number of news cycles but failed to score any points on actual policy. That, the leaders believe, has got to change.

"You're seeing a major doctrinal shift in how Republicans are going to focus all these debates," the strategist told me. "The key is to focus on winning the issue as opposed to winning the political moment. If you win the issue, people will think you are ready to govern."

I asked him to elaborate a little. "With the political moment, it's how can you find the one thing that gives you the momentary upper hand in terms of the coverage for the next six hours -- as opposed to engaging the electorate in creating a structural change in their opinion on which party is better able to handle an issue."

During the stimulus debate, the strategist argued, Republicans had an actual alternative but were unable to direct much attention to it -- in part because they were focusing so much of their rhetoric on the massive and unnecessary spending in the bill. The debate became a question of an up-or-down decision on the Obama/Democratic plan -- not a choice between the Obama/Democratic plan and a Republican plan. "The coverage of the stimulus bill focused on the difference between the House and Senate versions," the strategist told me, "which were basically two sides of the same coin." The Republican role was limited to a) saying no to the Obama/Democratic bill, and b) having three moderates in the Senate approve of the bill as long as it offered a little less than what Democrats proposed. The idea that Republicans, mostly in the House, had an actual full-scale alternative, was lost. "On the Sunday talk shows, right after it passed, find me one person who mentioned the Republican alternative," the strategist said.

So now Republicans want to try something new.
There's more at The Examiner.

Oh, and obviously, I don't agree with the author that Bobby Jindal's performance was embarrassing. However, I will admit that it wouldn't hurt Republicans to hire a few people in the entertainment industry to help with presentations.

Limbaugh Lashes Out at Jindal-Bashers--
"Style is not going to take this country back."

Think Progress posted the video:

LIMBAUGH: [T]he people on our side are really making a mistake if they go after Bobby Jindal on the basis of style. Because if you think — people on our side I’m talking to you — those of you who think Jindal was horrible, you think — in fact, I don’t ever want to hear from you ever again. … I’ve spoken to him numerous times, he’s brilliant. He’s the real deal.
Some of us in flyover country are getting sick of the East Coast elites bashing our conservative leaders.

This morning the local talk radio hosts were even talking about this. Jindal may not have rays of sunshine shooting from his a-- but the content of his speech was exceptional...
And, he didn't lie.

Some of us were very impressed with Jindal and were upset to see other conservatives pile on the popular governor.

More... Chip adds this in the comments:

The "conservative" pundits panning Jindal better get ready to get pushed aside. We're sick of seeing our country get flushed down the toilet by liberals because the Republican establishment fails to uphold conservative principles and fails to stand up against liberalism.

Jindal (and Palin, for that matter), represents the future.
And, here's another comment by Mike123:

Rush is right! As if that was in doubt.

We, conservatives, have to recognize that we are fighting not only the Democrats, the media and the Republican establishment. They hate the Jindals and Palins and are willing to be out of power rather than help them to win on a national level.

Big Brother Obama Supporters On Internet Are Watching You
While the Obama-led Democrats control the future of the United States of America, the grassroots on the Internet (The Obama Forum) are in the process of turning in “enemies of Obama”, including the parents of children who are Obama supporters.
'Here they are keeping a list and checking it twice...”Ok, if you see a car with a bumper sticker or anything about freedom or liberty or hatred for taxes or one of those “Nobamba” bumper stickers or anything that is against the government or Obama, do what you can to mark down the license plate number. Maybe the make and model of the car, I bet we might be able to get a statistical probability based on make and model to just go after all of a certain type of car. The government will have need for such a list pretty soon.

“I saw t his one this morning so I’ll start the list:

“Infraction: Ron Paul 2008 bumper sticker and a little “don’t tread on me” sign...” '

Obama Introduces Cap & Trade--- Finally a Solution to Pretend Global Warming

Obama introduced a cap and trade program today--
The plan may cost American companies billions of dollars and could result in the loss of 4 million jobs.

Obama released his 2009 budget today.
The pdf is here.

Included in this year's budget is a new Cap and Trade Program:

This is the same program that just collapsed in Europe.
You'd think the media might want to mention that?
Oh well.

Brietbart reported on the Obama cap and trade proposal:

President Barack Obama will propose raising new revenue through a greenhouse gas cap and emissions trading scheme when he unveils his first budget on Thursday, US media reported.
The budget he will present assumes an emissions trading system will generate revenue by 2012, the Washington Post reported.

Fifteen billion dollars of the money generated would be directed to clean-energy projects, the Post said, citing sources familiar with the document.

Another 60 billion would go to tax credits for lower- and middle-income working families, and the rest to help families, small businesses and communities deal with higher energy costs, the paper reported.

The Post cited testimony to Congress in September by Peter Orszag, currently Obama's budget director, estimating that revenue from a cap-and-trade scheme could reach 112 billion dollars by 2012.

According to Orszag, who at the time was director of the Congressional Budget Office, the program -- which would force companies to buy permits if they exceed pollution emission limits -- could generate between 50 and 300 billion dollars a year by 2020.
Obama's cap and trade plan could cost industry billions of dollars.
4 million American jobs may be lost as a result of this program.
Human Events reported:

The potential costs to America from cap-and-trade policies are enormous. The Department of Energy estimates that S. 2191, the Warner-Lieberman cap-and-trade proposal, will increase the cost of coal for power generation by between 161% and 413%. DOE estimates GDP losses (see chart) over the 21-year period they forecast, at between $444 billion and $1.308 trillion, with particular damage to the manufacturing sector. (This gives some hope that organized labor will, in a rare occurrence, oppose Democratic leaders on this issue.) Winegarden estimates that this bill could increase unemployment by 2.7% or about 4 million jobs. In fact, companies are already preparing to avoid increased level and volatility of American energy prices by setting up factories and partnerships in countries which won’t be subject to cap-and-trade restrictions…proving with real-world behavior of producers that no carbon-limiting regulation can succeed if it is not universal.
This sounds like just what the country needs during a recession to fight pretend global warming.

More... Obama's plan will result in nearly $1 trillion in new taxes over the next 10 years starting in 2011.

UPDATE: Market tanks again after Obama's plan released.

CPAC 2009 BOLTON: "If we get our act together, he is a one-termer"

DSC00195
The unmatched highlight of CPAC was John Bolton's speech. Seems to me Bolton ought to assume the mantle of leadership of the Conservative movement. And before a gathering of conservatives Bolton snarked on Obama's remark that Iran was a tiny threat - he said that President Barack Obama might learn a needed lesson if tiny city like  Chicago were destroyed by a nuclear bomb.Spectator has this:

John Bolton just spoke here at CPAC, offering a blistering critique of President Obama's foreign policies, insisting that, "If we get our act together, he is a one-termer."

Bolton said that conservatives should not be comforted by the fact that Obama has backed off some of his campaign rhetoric on issues such as Gitmo, NAFTA, and CIA black sites. "Being inconsistent and deceptive is not the same as being moderate," he said.

Bolton, echoing Joe Biden, said that Obama would be challenged internationally by foreign powers who seek to test the young administration. He said that Obama's weak reaction to Georgia during the campaign coupled with his skepticism regarding missile defense has emboldened a resurgent Russia. Hillary Clinton's decision to essentially take human rights off the table in her trip to China was a mistake. He explained that China is expanding its naval fleet, and will be in a position to challenge America in the western Pacific. An important test will come next month when it's the 50th anniversary of the Dali Lama's flight to Tibet -- Bolton said to watch for whether Obama has the backbone to meet with him in the White House. He also noted the North Korea's nuclear program would never be abandoned unless the U.S. puts more pressure on China. On Iran, he said that Obama is naive to believe that the issue can be resolved through negotiation. It has already mastered the nuclear fuel cycle, he said, and the only question is whether or not Israel will launch a military strike. That could present Obama with a major foreign policy crisis in the next 6 to 9 months.

Bad Math And Obama's Taxes

The Wall Street Journal has an excellent opinion piece on the curious arithmetic underlying President Obama's plan to raise taxes on the highest wage earners. The pull quote from the article sums things up nicely:

"Take everything they earn and it still won't be enough"

By promising Americans that only the wealthy will bear the burden of his tax increase the president ignores that the wealthy he targets are the small and mid sized businesses that historically comprise the bulk of new job creation. How is penalizing these tax payers going to expand employment? ...The president is telling Americans that if they make less than $250,000 they won't see their taxes raised "one single dime". Tax payers are well advised to reach for their wallets when they here rhetoric like this. They should also remember that every Obama promise comes with an expiration date.

PUTTING OIL SHALE OFF LIMITS? Interior Decision on Oil Shale Locks Away American Energy Resource Larger than Total Reserves of Middle East. Seems like a lousy decision to me.

barack's magical mystery tour, Part Three

February 26, 2009 Posted by Paul at 8:07 AM

I have not yet commented on the most dangerous aspect of President Obama's wishful, magical thinking -- his penchant for converting partisan projections into existing reality. It's one thing to assert: "I will not allow terrorists to plot against the American people from safe havens half a world away." Eveyone understands that this is a promise.

But what are we to make of this statement: "We have made college affordable for nearly seven million more students." I assume that Obama was referring to the provision in the stimulus package which, in his words, provides "families who struggle to pay tuition costs. . .a $2,500 tax credit for all four years of college."

How, though, does Obama know that this tax credit makes college affordable for nearly seven million more students? Presumably, someone made this projection. But it is a meaningless one. For (to my knowledge) there is no reliable, objective way of determining when college becomes "affordable" for a given family. That is, there is no way to define a financial borderline of general applicability at which a family will conclude it can't afford to send their child to college. The existence of student loans only highlights the difficulty. Certainly establishing a small tax credit will assist families at the margin. But to convert that into a number of students for whom college has become "affordable" is hocus pocus.

The same can be said about Obama's claim that the stimulus package will "save or create" 3.5 million jobs. Although Obama at least couched this in promisory language, rather than as a fait accompli, the use of the word "save" will make it impossible to verify whether the promise has been kept. Thus, Obama effectively is making a definitive claim about the effect of the stimulus package on employment.

But no economist can reliably make such a projection. That is why, to my knowledge, President Bush did not attempt to quantify in advance how many jobs would be "created or saved" as a result of his tax cuts (or if he did, it did not become a mantra). The tax cuts were urged as a means of creating new jobs and when, month after month, hundreds of thousands of new jobs appeared, the administration took credit. But that's a far cry from what Obama is doing.

I hope we're not witnessing the advent of the "big lie," wherein a leader simply presents repeatedly a bogus or unverifiable claim with the expectation that the "masses" will come to believe it. The government can't fake a recovery, of course, but there is a good deal of middle ground between a full-scale recovery and an ongoing recession (recall the so-called "jobless recovery"). It's understandable that Obama wants to begin grabbing that middle ground, but it's troubling that he's doing so in such an intellectually dishonest fashion.

Now CNN Says Hate Groups Are Growing

February 26th, 2009

Apparently this week it’s CNN’s turn to run the Southern Poverty Law Center’s latest press release:

A cartoon threatening that the KKK would lynch Republican carpetbaggers, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Independent Monitor, 1868

Growing hate groups blame Obama, economy

By Stephanie Chen

(CNN) — Don Black said he despises Barack Obama. And he said he believes illegal aliens undermine the economic fabric of the United States.

Black, a 55-year-old former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard, isn’t the only person who holds such firm beliefs, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which today released its annual hate group report.

The center’s report, "The Year in Hate," found the number of hate groups grew by 54 percent since 2000. The study identified 926 hate groups — defined as groups with beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people — active in 2008. That’s a 4 percent jump, adding 38 more than the year before.

What makes this year’s report different is that hate groups have found two more things to be angry about — the nation’s first African-American president and an economy that is hemorrhaging jobs. For the past decade, Latino immigration has fueled the growth of hate groups…

"We fear these conditions will favor the growth of these groups in the future," said Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project

Black claims the number of registered members and readers on his white nationalist Web site surged to unprecedented levels in recent months.

On the day after Obama’s historic election, more than 2,000 people joined his Web site, a remarkable increase from the approximately 80 new members a day he was getting, Black said. His Web site, which was started in 1995, is one of the oldest and largest hate group sites. The site received so many hits that it crashed after election results were announced. The site boasts 110,000 registered members today, Black said

Obama serves as a "visual aid" that is helping respark a sense of purpose in current supporters and lure new members, said neo-Nazi David Duke, the former Klan leader who was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in the 1980s. Duke said he fears "the white European-American" heritage will soon be destroyed. He added that his Web site sees around 40,000 unique visitors a day, up from 15,000 a day before Obama won the election

White supremacist groups have gained traction, a reversal from the decline the groups experienced since 2000, according to the law center report. One of the smaller Ku Klux Klan groups, the United Northern and Southern Knights, more than doubled its chapters, widening its geographic reach from eight to 24 states, according to the report….

In the city of Detroit, Michigan, where the weak economy has taken a particularly devastating toll, Jeff Schoep serves as the commander for the National Socialist Movement, one of the largest neo-Nazi groups in the United States.

Schoep said he has seen membership grow by 40 percent in recent months, mostly because of the dire economic circumstances. It is the "most dramatic growth" he has seen since he joined the movement in the mid-1990s. The group does not reveal membership numbers to the media, he said

Loyal readers will recall that we have debunked the SPLC’s claims numerous times, such as here and here and here and here.

But the ultra left never let such details get in the way of establishing a new “truth.”

Black claims the number of registered members and readers on his white nationalist Web site surged to unprecedented levels in recent months.

According to the internet traffic monitoring site, Alexa, Mr. Black is a liar.

[David Duke] added that his Web site sees around 40,000 unique visitors a day, up from 15,000 a day before Obama won the election.

As too, is Mr. Duke.

Schoep said he has seen membership [of the the National Socialist Movement] grow by 40 percent in recent months, mostly because of the dire economic circumstances. It is the "most dramatic growth" he has seen since he joined the movement in the mid-1990s.

Alas, so too is Mr. Schoep, according to Alexa.

Mind you, these are the very same three hate group heads that the SPLC trots out in almost every one of their breathless press releases.

Indeed, even their quotes are practically the same every time.

Which begs the question, why does Mr. Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project continue to cite their claims as actual facts?

And why doesn’t anyone in our watchdog media ever bother to factcheck Mr. Potok?

(These are of course rhetorical questions. We all know why.)

UPDATE: Little Miss Attila has a rundown of this Friday’s, across the country, Tea Parties. Los Angeles area has two - Santa Monica Pier and in front of the Federal Building in Westwood.

Also, Michelle Malkin is continuously adding to the list with her Tea Party USA Watch

Interesting how CNN somehow forgot to mention the following hate groups:

MEChA, Nation Of Islam -Black Panthers, Congressional Black Caucus, Obama’s commie cabinet, the party of the Seditious & Sleazy, and last but not least the MSM

Let’s get this Tea Party started; Update: DC Tea Party now at Lafayette Park

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 26, 2009 06:48 PM

It’s really on. Tomorrow, thousands of sick and tired taxpayers on the ground and online will participate in “Tea Parties” across the country. Go here for links and locations. Chuck Simmins also has a handy thumbnail guide, as does Little Miss Attila, whose list I’m reprinting below the Tea Party Twitter widget, with as many additions as I can keep up with through the night.

There are two tabs on the widget: The #teaparty live feed and my #michellemalkin twitter feed (there may be up to a 30 minute delay on updates). I’ll be on a plane tonight and (hopefully) in D.C. tomorrow to cover the Tea Party there. Party on!

***Update: DC Tea Party moved to Lafayette Party across from the White House. They just got permit…directly north of the White House on H Street between 15th and 17th Streets, NW, Washington DC***

If you can’t make it to a protest event, one Facebook user has posted the following virtual Tea Party info:

Many of us were inspired after Rick Santelli gave his speech on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange calling for a Chicago Tea Party.

There will be many events taking place across the country where people are gathering in protest of all of the spending and taxing that has been occurring lately in government. I wanted to offer an opportunity for those of us who have to work to be able to participate.

I want to encourage all of you to stage your own form of a protest at your work. Don’t do anything against your company policy that would get you disciplined or fired. Here are a few ways that you can participate:

1. Participate in the live tweeting using the #teaparty hashtag.
2. Take part in the Tea Party rally in Second Life.
3. Writing letters to the media, elected officials, etc.
4. Blogging about the Tea Party and the message behind it.
5. Bring bags of tea to work and lay them on your desk. When your co-workers ask you why, explain the reasoning behind the protest and say you are showing your support.
6. Make iced tea for the office and share the message with those you work with.

The last two on that list are things you can do at work to show support, but if you don’t feel comfortable you can still do them, but just not explain your reasoning to your co-workers if you aren’t comfortable or if you don’t work in a really accepting place.

I hope that this offers you a way to participate and I hope to “see” you there!

St. Louis Arch Tea Party Draws 1,500 Protesters!

1,500 protesters braved the cold (in the 30's) and wind today at the St. Louis Arch for the anti-Spendulus rally.

The local television predicted 100 protesters would show up.
Despite the cold and the timing (11:00 AM on Friday) the turn out was respectable.

Bill Hennessey organized the rally. It was announced Sunday on The Dana Show on 97.1 FM and the local media actually reported on it.
Patrick Leahy of Top Conservatives on Twitter and Dana talked more about Tea Party wave on her show.
Jamie Allman from 97.1 made it down to the Arch today.
It was a great success.

After listening to several speakers including a few local conservative politicians the crowd walked down and dumped tea in the Mississippi.

For more on the Tea Party Protests:
Check out Glenn Reynolds or Michelle Malkin's website.

Founding Bloggers has pictures from the Chicago tea party where they were chanting "Socialism Sucks!"

Slapstick has photos from Denver.

The Provacateur has a report from Oklahoma City.

This Aint Hell covered the DC protest.

Gay Patriot has pics from the LA protest.

TEA PARTY UPDATE: photos and Fox TV video from Chicago.

Plus, a report from Seattle, courtesy of Sherri Kennamer, who writes: “I attended the Tea Party in Seattle this afternoon. The crowd was three hundred or so.” Here’s a pic she sent.

Plus, St. Louis Arch Tea Party Draws 1,500 Protesters! Lots of pictures at the link, as well as links to reports on other protests around the country.

Meanwhile, here’s a Christian Science Monitor story from Atlanta’s demonstration:

Several thousand neopatriots – some shouting “Give me liberty or give me death!” – took to the streets in over 30 US cities Friday, representing what some of them call the beginning of a new conservative counterculture in America.

“The spark has been lit,” says Ben Mihalski, a “house husband” from Cobb County, Ga., one of at least 300 protesters who gathered in a hefty downpour outside the Georgia Capitol on Friday to protest what they see as profligate spending by Washington.

Protesters with sign-slogans like “Pillage and plunder: At least the Vikings did it openly” fanned out across capitols and courthouses in cities from Nashville, Tenn., to Los Angeles, objecting to bailouts and policy changes since the inauguration of President Obama.

The Tea Party USA movement also added some symbolic flourish, vowing to gather tens of thousands of tea bags to be dumped on the floor of the US Congress. In Atlanta, the brand was Luzianne.

The article also observes, “the largely grassroots show of force hints at a sharpening thorn for Democrats and a potential powder keg that could threaten to blow ahead of the 2010 congressional elections.”

And, courtesy of A.C. Kleinheider, a Nashville Post report, with video, on the Nashville protest.

UPDATE: Dave Weigel reports from the White House protest.

And reader Jerry Dickerson sends this from Houston: “This picture was taken at the Houston Texas Tea Party at Discovery Green. At 12:30 there were approx 250-300 attendees, pretty good turn-out considering the livestock show barbeque cook-off in Reliant Park was a competitor.” Turning out against pork vs. turning out for pork. Hmm. Tough call.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Here’s a report by reader Donna Higgins from the Tempe, Arizona protest:

We had approximately 150- 200 people at noon at the Tempe Town Lake Tea Party. Tom Jenny, the Arizona Director of Americans for Prosperity, was in charge. They had several state legislators who talked and then invited people in the crowd to speak as well. Here are a few shots from today, use any and all if you like.

Hopefully the next one will inspire more to turn out and hopefully they will have a bull horn or microphone so it would be easier to hear.

Yes, the folks doing these are inexperienced at the moment. That’ll change. Here’s a picture from Tempe, where the weather was better than many locations today!

The weather was a lot worse in Lansing, Michigan. Reader Duane Hershberger reports: “Some pictures from Lansing, Michigan. My guess is 120 people showed up in 30 degree weather with 4 days notice. Freezing rain was predicted, but did not materialize. Actually, just as we were starting the sun came for 5 minutes.” Not quite Tempe, but extra points for hardiness! Here’s a pic. Brr! And here’s a report with more photos from Lansing.

Nicer in Sacramento, too. Reader Doug Richard sends this: “Here are pictures I took at the Sacramento Tea Party earlier today. Mark Williams rallied the crowd at the start of the event. Surprisingly, there were only a couple jeers during the entire time, but scores of honks in agreement, as well as cheering car occupants driving by.”

Also, here are some more pictures from Denver.

IT’S COLD AND RAINY, but the Tea Party pictures are coming in via cellphone already. Here are a couple.

From Atlanta, where a reported 300-400 showed up, a flag with protest babes:

From Chicago:

More Chicago pictures here. Plus this summary: “The Chicago Tea Party was an unqualified success. I’m not an expert at judging crowd sizes, but there could’ve been as many as 500 to 1000 people there. In cold weather, in the middle of February, without paid organizers like the left has.”

Plus Bill Rickords emails from Wichita, Kansas: “About 3-400 folks showed up in 25 degree weather. Don’t know what these things would be in Spring weather. But we had a pig show up anyway.” I thought they were all in D.C.!

And Bradley Ems emails from St. Louis: “I don’t know if you’ve gotten any pictures from St. Louis (I’m too swamped at work to have attended), but KMOX just reported that the tea party here was expected to draw a small group of 50…over 1,000 showed up. There is something brwing in the
heartland.”

And Joe Fairbanks emails from Oklahoma City: “I’ll be sending you pictures from the ‘Tea Party’ in Oklahoma City soon. I wanted to let you know that we had an amazing turnout of 400 people. This is amazing for multiple reasons, but mostly because this rally was organized in less than 48 hours and it took place at 11 am and the temperature was below freezing with the wind blowing quite strongly. Simply put: people are mad as hell. Obama and Congress won’t be able to ignore this anger much longer if they hope to survive 2010 or 2012. I can also tell you the crowd did take a lot of pride in the fact that our Senators, Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe, are two of the leaders against all this irresponsible spending. I’ll get those pictures to you as soon as I get them back.”

Plus, at Gay Patriot, pics from Los Angeles.

UPDATE: Reader Trish Elam sends this news report on Atlanta from WXIA TV. I’m in the car and don’t have a good enough connection to play it, but I’m passing it along FYI.

Plus, reader Michael Bassham reports from the Nashville event: “Weather was cold and drizzly. Attendance, in my estimation, was about 300.” Plus, a pic:

And a reader who requests anonymity writes from Tulsa: “Surely someone will send you a better pic than this one, but wanted to make sure you had at least something from Tulsa’s event, where I’d say about 200 or so turned out on a very cold day.”

And, via email, some thoughts from human-rights blogger Robert Mayer:

I just want to offer you and the tea party protesters some words of encouragement. As someone who has studied (and blogged) protest as an act of democratic revolution and people power in the post-Soviet area, I know a lot about the dynamics of mass civil society unrest, government transition, etc…

What we are seeing now is truly huge POTENTIAL for massive civil unrest against the American government gone lunatic with spending. Realistically, 400-1000 people at a protest, even at a dozen protests across the country, will do nothing to change the minds of our idiot leaders.

However, it creates the POTENTIAL that each protest could have a million. The Orange Revolution in Ukraine did not start out with two million people camping in tents in downtown Kiev. It started with only a few hundred diehard activists.

Conservatives and libertarians have never had a strong activist base, but this appears to be the time to start. They need to capture today’s momentum and hold bigger and bigger protests every week. Use technology to organize and move and grow the movement. Compared to other countries, the United States is huge. Don’t aim for a massive march on D.C. (at least, until you have a few million going). Focus the protests locally, on state policians and state capitols.

In any case, this is simply an email of encouragement to you guys. You just have to stay determined and keep people focused and believing. You’d be surprised. Within a month you could go from 500 to 50,000.

Well, it’s broken a thousand already, reportedly, and in not much more than a week.

Meanwhile, Ed Driscoll has the photo and quote of the day, so far.

The Tea Parties Have Begun

***UP DATE ***

Provocateur Jim says he arrived late at the party in Oklahoma City. He has a picture of the event.

Not a bad crowd for such short notice…not to mention that it’s freaking freezing February.

Gateway Pundit has his report, too:

1,500 protesters braved the cold (in the 30’s) and wind today at the St. Louis Arch for the anti-Spendulus rally.

The local television predicted 100 protesters would show up. Despite the cold and the timing (11:00 AM on Friday) the turn out was respectable.

As usual, he has great pictures.

Moving on to Denver, Slapstick says:

A raucous crowd gathered on a chilly Friday morning, and had a clear message for President Barack Obama…

The Gadsden Society will be holding a non-partisan, pro-liberty rally on Sunday on the west steps of the state capitol at 2pm.

My favorite sign at this rally: “IF YOU CAN’T DEFEND IT, DON’T SPEND IT”.

Michelle Malkin has a good cross-section of the party pictures, plus links.

Tea Party photo album: Fiscal responsibility is the new counterculture

She says:

I’ve got tons of photos and e-mails pouring in from Tea Party people across the country. I joked to a Christian Science Monitor reporter covering the events that fiscal responsibility is the new counterculture. More coverage/photos/livestreaming at TCOT Report.

There is, as the old ‘60s song goes, something happening here. And what it is, is very clear: A grass-roots revolt against the culture of entitlement. The spendzillas in Washington do not speak for us.

So far, she has pictures from:

I’ll look around for a blog that is managing to find every city. I know there’s one out there.

Rick Santelli’s rant earlier this week on the “stimulus” package has gone viral and is spreading.

It might never have happened had not the President’s press secretary felt compelled to make fun of Mr. Santelli’s impromptu speech during the press conference the next day.

This administration is proving to be quite thin-skinned. Instead of ignoring their critics, the Obama people seem compelled to attempt to bring them down with ridicule. This is not the first time they’ve become upset by media criticism. Just imagine how ballistic they’ll be when -- or if -- the national media ever starts chewing on this for real. So far, the “journalists” who sit in the White House press room are lap dogs. Obviously, they won’t risk being put out in the cold for any confrontational questions.

But there’s a large section of the U.S. media who don’t have to worry about access to the press section, so we’re going to be hearing from more people like Santelli.

First, look at Mr. Santelli’s rant from the “pit” of the trading floor. Notice when he suggests that Americans who are angry about the pork-larded “stimulus” bill ought to have another tea party.

The list below the fold of regional tea parties is from The Northshore Journal. Of all those I’ve checked it seems the most comprehensive. If you click the link, you can see the sponsors for each area. Some of these events are today, and some are tomorrow. As time goes on today, it’s my guess that the list will continue to grow.

It is also likely to generate further tea parties in the future, as the weather grows warmer and people have more time to plan larger events.

One hopes that the President's press secretary will ignore the brouhaha this time. If he doesn't, it will indicate an inability to learn from his mistakes. Not a good sign for Obama's grand strategy.

I don’t know how even to articulate an argument that it’s constitutional to give a vote to a D.C. representative in the House. “Shredding the Constitution. It’s not just for the Bush administration anymore.”

I think the argument is, I won.

Puncturing Peretz’s Balloon: “Martin Peretz who gave his word that Barack Obama’s eloquence about Israel was sincere is now questioning that. He’s stunned. I hope that he will apologize for accusing those of us who were skeptical of President Obama’s commitment to Israel of bad faith or ignorance. . . . I can’t understand why the media hasn’t even reported on the appointment of Freeman. This is an important post and he is close to two nations that don’t necessarily have America’s best interests at heart.”

Peretz was played for a sucker, answering at least one of the “who are the rubes?” questions from last fall. He won’t be the last to make this discovery, I suspect.

A TRILLION Dollars in New Taxes!

A TRILLION!

I am unconvinced that Americans - wanting to fell good about themselves and be optimistic and “hopeful” in 2008 - really thought this was the change they were voting for:

1) On people making more than $250,000.

* $338 billion - Bush tax cuts expire
* $179 billlion - eliminate itemized deduction
* $118 billion - capital gains tax hike

The business tax hikes are even worse. Obama will increase taxes on existing American oil production starting in 2011. Do we have massive amounts of alternative energy capacity ready to replace the energy production and usage that this will discourage? A growing economy has to have a reliable energy supply. Energy producers get hit on several fronts in this plan, and those costs will either result in lower energy production or increased cost to the consumers.

This is going to “create or save” millions of jobs? Hog-tying and hyper-regulating small businesses (a small business doing $250,000 a year is a VERY small business, not a fat-cat enterprise) will not create jobs. It will inspire businesses to close down.

Pssssssst:
President Obama - revitalizing the economy and creating jobs; you’re doin’ it wrong!

Here’s what you actually mean to be doing, right?

…if you take about 400 Billion of spending out of that bill - just chuck it for now, and bring it up later, when we’re back on our feet - and then maybe spread 200 billion around to the taxpayers by way of payroll tax reductions, tax-holidays and temporary tax-relief programs, and spend some money on job-creation and vo-tech educational programs and ummm…oh, yeah, open ANWR and most of our coastal oil reserves up for drilling, reinstate the Bush executive order allowing drilling contracts in Utah and start investigating the feasibility of refining oil shale, you could actually create good-paying jobs, which will contribute to the tax-base.

No?

Wassamatta, President Obama, you no like America? You no want her working, and dreaming, anymore?

Arghghgh. I need to go bake some Irish Soda Bread. Don’t have the head for anything else.

HOWEVER: Maxed Out Mama is going gangbusters now that she has finally stopped laughing at Tuesday’s speech. Go see.

BizzyBlog says Welcome to the Punk Presidency

Glenn Reynolds is hearing from today’s tea-partiers across the nation. Lots of people out protesting in cold weather. But unless we learn how to get some professional agitators on board to help organize, I fear the protests will never impress…or get coverage.

Shrinkwrapped: Is collecting opinions; go leave yours Also, he writes:

The consequences for our economy of a President who refuses to recognize the limits of reality will be painful and difficult for all of us.

It’s a valid point: if she were a GOP First Lady, they’d be savaging her. Some of the comments are a bit over-the-top, offensive, and tasteless, so be warned.

FIRST REPORT: Okay, I sat down with the Kindle 2 last night and read Niall Ferguson’s history of money — and I had to make myself stop and go to bed. So I’d say it’s as absorbing a reading experience as an actual paper book. I find myself wishing that the screen was a bit contrastier when I look at it, but when I actually read it it’s fine.

TEA PARTY UPDATE: MSNBC reports from San Diego:

About 350 protesters showed up at the Embarcadero, just north of the Star of India, at about 9 a.m. for the protest. The event was was organized by Dawn Wildman of the Neighborhood Republican Club, whose members are upset about the new taxes that were written into law last week as part of a budget deal carved out in Sacramento as well as the giant stimulus package coming out of Washington.

And from Jacksonville, Florida:

In a protest harkening back to a milestone in American history, people at the Jacksonville Landing and in cities large and small across the nation turned out Friday to reenact the Boston tea party in protest to the latest stimulus package and the foreclosure assistance bill.

The tax revolt, partly inspired by CNBC reporter Rick Santelli’s rant earlier this week about President Barack Obama’s housing rescue plan, resulted in a grassroots effort pushing “tea party” protests Friday in large cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Houston, and small towns like Tulsa, Iowa, and Calera, Ala.

Buffalo, New York:

Western New Yorkers furious about tax increases are joining a nationwide protest known as the Tea Party. . . .Now, in dozens of cities, including Buffalo, angry taxpayers are staging tea party protests against excessive government spending and taxes, and waste.

Dallas:

This rant by CNBC’s Rick Santelli against big-government spending got things started. Then the outfit called Top Conservatives on Twitter took up the call and, within days, “Tea Parties” were organized in a number of cities protesting federal bailout schemes–including today in Dallas. Here are some of an estimated 250 who gathered at Victory Plaza to dunk the “stimulus bill” in a tank of tea, page by page. Said an organizer: “We’re just people who don’t want our kids and grandchildren shackled with thousands of dollars of debt each.” Oh, hell, folks, why not? It’s only money!

Plus, New York Times: The Tea Party (Again) As A Political Protest.

UPDATE: Going beyond Rick Santelli? A reader emails: “Thought I would share with you a suggestion given by Dave Ramsey this evening on CNBC. He suggested boycotting BOA & Citibank in order to send a message to the Feds (now part owners) that we will not do business with the Federal Gov’t. If you have a balance on a credit card with them transfer it to a responsible lender. Move your checking, savings or any other dealing to another lender.” Hmm. Did Dave Ramsey really say this?

Obama: Your conscience means nothing to me…UPDATED

I’ve been waiting for this story and knew it would come - dropped on a Friday night, of course:

Taking another step into the abortion debate, the Obama administration today will move to rescind a controversial rule that allows healthcare workers to deny abortion counseling or other family planning services if doing so would violate their moral beliefs, according to administration officials.

The rollback of the so-called conscience rule comes just two months after the Bush administration announced it late last year in one of its final policy initiatives.

The spin, of course, is that the Bush law was “confusing in scope.” That it needs “clarification.”

Apparently it is a very complex thing for someone to say, “no, I cannot in good conscience do this,” on issues which - despite the euphemistic language in which both abortion and contraception have long-been shrouded - truly involve matters of life and death or (at the minimum) moral consequence.

A person may believe she is free to take a “morning after pill,” and a second person might even agree with the first that she is free to do that. This does not mean that - if the second person is convinced the thing is an abortifacient - he or she should be compelled by law to deny his or her own conscience and dispense the drug. The point is even clearer in the case of abortion. A doctor may even be “pro-choice” but personally unwilling to perform an abortion and he or she should be free to make that choice.

When people believe their own soul is in peril if they participate in an action, the conscientious objection should be sustained. It always has been, before.

Can it be sustainable in Obamaland, or is this very fundamental sort of American freedom to be denied her citizenry in service to expedient (and monetarily lucrative) politics?

If we are going to be a nation that supports the “freedom to choose,” then it seems to me that has to go both ways. Professional health workers should be “free to choose” whether or not they will participate in what they find to be morally objectionable.

Freedom that is only one-sided i.e., “she is free to have a late term, partial-birth abortion and you are not free to refuse her request” or “she is free to demand this contraception and you are not free to refuse to fill that prescription,” is not really freedom.

It is enslavement. Dress it up any way you want. If the government is forcing you to do what your conscience tells you not to, under threats to your freedom, your purse or your livelihood, then you are not free.

But you know, the other night, when Obama addressed the joint houses of Congress, he only used the world “freedom” once. Just once. It’s not really what he’s about. Not really on his radar.

He appears to be more about…well…I won, and I am the president and you will live the way I think you should live, so I will make all of your choices for you, and you will obey.

This is not a president who is all about freedom, like the last American president.

Control, yes. Lots and lots of control. But freedom…not so much.

I wonder…once health professionals are compelled to prescribe or to abort, against their consciences, it won’t be a very big step toward demanding that they kill “compassionately put-to-rest” those whose quality of life is deemed “insufficient” by the government’s measure. Or, you know…those who are simply becoming too expensive to keep alive on “the taxpayers dime.”

Because when it comes down to Socialized Medicine “universal health care” a Ted Kennedy - who is useful, rich and connected - may be deemed worth treating and saving. But you and I, mere peons without “friends, money or connections” - we’d be a drain on the taxpayer’s dear purse.

UPDATE I: From a blog I don’t think I have ever seen before:

Any state that claims the competence to make all decisions for its subjects must of course brook no opposition. All must go along with the program. In the words of that great humanitarian and promoter of big government, Benito Mussolini, “Everything in the State. Nothing outside the State. Nothing against the State.”

Whether you call this state socialist or fascist will not matter, for the essentials are the same in both cases—more controls, more taxation, more government, less liberty.

UPDATE II: An interesting perspective from Mona Charen:

It will be difficult to resist this charismatic figure, but let’s be clear about this: Though he denies what he is about, he is pulling the country dangerously toward a statist dead end.
