Shocker: Am I Anti-Gay? ["Gays" malign "Gay"-friendly Pychology Today editor]
Psychology Today ^ | Jan/Feb 2003 | Robert Epstein

Posted on 01/29/2003 11:29:48 AM PST by Notwithstanding

Summary: You be the judge. A letter form the editor in chief.

... I bring these matters to your attention because of a threatening phone call I received a few weeks ago from a fellow psychologist. On page 78 of our last issue, PT ran a small ad for a book called A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality by Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D., and his wife Linda. Nicolosi is a psychologist who specializes in trying to help unhappy gays become straight. Apparently feeling that this rather modest contribution to the literature on homosexuality wasn't getting enough attention, the psychologist, who identified herself as a lesbian activist, called me at home on a Saturday to tell me that PT should not have run such a heinous ad, that she was speaking for "thousands" of gays who were going to boycott PT, "and worse," that Dr. Nicolosi was a "bigot," that no gay person had ever successfully become straight, that homosexuality was entirely determined by genes, and that sexual conversion therapy had been condemned by the American Psychological Association. I told her that the editorial department at PT has no connection whatsoever with the advertising department, but she was unimpressed. She subsequently posted messages on the Internet urging people to harrass me at home (no one else ever did) and to send me complaint letters.

In all, I received about 120 letters, many of which exemplified a bad game of Telephone: Some people complained about an anti-gay "article" PT had published; others referred to an anti-gay book I had published and people who weren't subscribers said they were dropping their subscriptions. Several writers suggested I was a "Nazi" and a "bigot," and one compared me with the Taliban. A surprising number of letters asserted that gays have a right to be rude or abusive because they themselves have been abused. Most echoed the same points that my caller had made....

100% for asthma and autism, huh?

Yeah Huh!

Autism: "Concordance rates among identical twins are estimated to be approximately 60%, but have been reported to be as high as 95%."

“However, Schellenberg points out, a concordance rate ***less than 100 percent*** suggests additional, as yet unidentified, environmental factors may play some role.”

Asthma: "The table shows, however, that instead of a 100% concordance, there is only a 59% concordance between identical twins."

(Because identical twins ***have the same genes***.) In other words, the "concordance rate" should be 100%.

So unless you’re prepared to demonstrate which genetic marker is different, and your cites DON’T and CAN’T, let’s just go with the industry standard that identical twins are identical unless you want to debate phenotype. OK?

As far as how it's "proven". DZ twins share only 50% of their DNA, same as any pair of siblings.

Right, good so far.

A single mutated gene out of how many genes in humans?

Not ALL are checked, in fact ONLY 14 to 16 are so this assertion is mute.

Close enough that we're not going to be seeing a third twin category -- they are "identical".

Wrong again, YES there is! They're called Polar Body Twins. And yet you’ve still not established that your article has proven the “Brazilian twins” are not DZ.

What would your reaction have been if a man had come on to your wife and not taken no for an answer?

Comparing normal behavior with abnormal behavior is a pathology in and of its self.

Let’s rephrase, shall we?

What would your reaction have been if a man sheep had come on to your wife and not taken no for an answer?

What would your reaction have been if a man relative had come on to your wife and not taken no for an answer? …

yendu bwam: Homosexuality is incredibly abnormal.

madg: Not for some.

yendu bwam: Really, magd, can you tell me that you think a man's putting his sexual organ up another man's rectum is normal?

Me: Hehehe…BwaaHaHa ha ha ha…How convoluted one becomes when justifying one's own iniquities.

Both gays and straights have a right to seek treatment when they're unhappy with their sexual orientation, and some choose to try to change that orientation. It would be absurd to assert that only heterosexuals should have that right.

Are there any heterosexuals who have sought the help of a therapist to become homosexual???

short lifespans on average, etc. etc. are normal.

Uh Oh!!! You cited Paul Cameron, don’t you know that ALL of his research, and ALL of NARTH’s research and ALL of the research from the AFA, CWA, ect. and ALL of anyone who disagrees with the homosexual agenda is discredited, libelous, unqualified…100%!!!!! NO exceptions, really!!!

A poor example as Autism can be driven by environmental factors such as the MMR immunization drugs.

can.

Extreme levels of stress can create an initial condition of psycho-somatic asthma in children. Additionally, it's now known that cockroaches present in the home can cause children to develop asthma.

can can

What the twin studies show is that there are environmental as well as genetic factors in these conditions.

If they were entirely genetic, we'd see a much higher concordance between identical twins, approaching 100%. If it were entirely environmental, we'd see a concordance rate in identical twins closer to the rate between non-identical twins.

I'd have beat him to a pulp. I discriminate according to gender, and do not hit women. Gender is an XY or XX pair of chromosomes not deviant or normal sexual behavior.

Ever had a woman come on to you strongly? I don't need to tell you that this happens daily. Isn't it possible then that gays aren't trying to recruit you, that they don't care whether or not you sleep with members of your same gender further down the line, but instead simply find you attractive and are being pushy for sex?

No. Trying to change a person's sexual orientation is quite a bit more than "coming on strongly". Homosexuals *need* to change several peoples' sexual orientation to have a group of participants to select among on any given "adventure".

Just playing devil's advocate. You may have some strong arguments, but this is not one of them.

The equivalence cannot be made, as demonstrated by other posters.

I have compassion for those who suffer from homosexual tendencies. But all my life, those homosexuals I've known have led distorted and often horrific lives - filled with bizarre sexual practices, incredible promiscuity, sex with people they don't know (sex first, getting to know someone later), alcoholism, AIDs, multiple venereal diseases (many involving the rectal tract), depression, low self-worth (no matter how hard they try to normalize their disorder), etc. It's not hard to understand why the lifespans of homosexuals are far shorter, on average, than those of normal people. Parents of homosexuals should love their children unconditionally. Yet as part of that love, they should keep their children away from the typical homosexual lifestyle - away from anal intercourse, away from promiscuity, away from sex with strangers, etc. etc. And they should seek to encourage their children to consider psychological help for what is a serious psychological problem.

SO set up a situation that's non-falsifiable and claim victory.

Environmental factors are the primary reason for homosexual behavior. Some claim that it's a nutritional *deficiency* in the womb, others, like myself, claim that it's a mental disorder brought about by a combination of factors including but not limited to: low self-esteem, a need to "belong", poor relationships within the family, and an addictive personality.

All of a pedophile's victims will not become homosexual, but in combination with repeated abuse, seduction, and the aforementioned LIE, more than your 2% will reach that conclusion.

Many of the 13 and 14 year old boys who were molested by priests in the homosexual molestation scandal in the Catholic Church were told, on purpose, by those priests that they must be homosexual. Such an evil form of child abuse - messing with a kid's sexuality before he's even had a chance to get to know girls, and just as his sexual instincts are developing. Homosexual men should never be allowed to be in close quarters with teenage boys. My Church, which is now heavily queerized, has allowed the trust that people once had for priests being involved with their sons to be totally and completely destroyed.

Right - just like we're all haters and bigots for wanting to protect our kids from the homo-agenda.

I didn't set it up; it's just the way it is.

But then again, I'm not using terms such as "primary reason" w/o offering proof or evidence. Even with evidence, I haven't used that term.

All of your proposed causual factors are "chicken or egg" things and less than useless to anyone interested in preventing the condition.

You think homosexuality has no moral or political implications? C'mon, JoshGray, get real.

In short: If gays evolved that way then why didn't -- in the course of natural selection and evolution -- they also get different body parts that support their behavior?

In order to get the kind of changes you hve described one has to (1) get a mutation that allows for a change in human embryological development, resulting in said changes, and (2) pass that particular mutation along to offspring. Also, if this occured one could make an argument for a new species of man. So, in this sense, according to the "tribe argument," since gays in the tribe do not produce, you won't see these kinds of changes.

Also, just because gays don't reproduce, doesn't mean that the genetic frequency of genes that cause "gayness" would change. Why because gays are born from straight parents. The gene frequencies are actually maintained through straight carriers. In large enough populations (6 billion humans), without selection pressures, gene frequencies tend not to change, but rather stay the same. By analogy think about the disease cystic fibrosis. Most of these people don't live to an age when they can reproduce - yet children with cystic fibrosis are still born at a pretty constant rate. Basically, when you have enough carriers, and a reasonable amount of random mating, these genes will continue to circulate in the population.

Is gayness genetic? I'm sure that's part of it, but even if gayness were purely genetic, it still shouldn't hurt a Christian's perspective. For instance violent people (in prison) have been shown have similar genes. So since violence and antisocial behavior has a genetic compent, do we excuse it? No. Because we all have a choice. I know three gay people, one an aquaintance, and the other two are friends, and I think I safely say that for these people their orientation is what is natural for them. They were born being attracted to men. If you think about it, in a fallen and imperfect world, why would we expect there not some be some screwed up genes, and people who are screwed up because of those genes?
