Well, the Garand semi auto rifle was, I believe, more effective by far than the rifle the Germans used for most of the war. Possession of the superior basic weapon has to have made a major difference. I have read that when first confronted with our rifle companies, German soldiers thought they were facing fully automatic weapons.
I'm not too sure we ever closed the gap on tanks, though.

I'm not too sure we ever closed the gap on tanks, though.Sheer numbers negated the need for a superior tank, by the time it would have been ready in sufficent numbers, the war was all but over.
Different tanks were better or worse depending on the situation as well. Tigers and Panzers had different strengths, as did the American tanks. Earlier American tanks sucked when up against enemy tanks but were very useful for other things.
