Yes, I saw him. I don't know what to think about that book. Frum SEEMS positive...but so did Woodward, and I was very disappointed in Woodward's book.

Daughter called this evening. She is scheduled to fly out of Midway on ATA's commuter flight. I told her that if the weather is bad, to skip the flight and we would figure something out, (even if I have to drive up there and get her). I hate worrying about this, but that crash today set me on edge.

That probably isn't bad advice, about the weather, especially the icing problem. I've thought of that when flying at this time of year.

What defines "commuter" flight....size of plane, distance or both?

I flew ~70 seater from Cleveland to Providence last June, then a 9 seater from there to Nantucket.

The first seemed awfully small, but probably only the latter was the commuter flight.

ATA flying in/out of Midway has a reputation for delays, BTW. Drives the business people and their drivers crazy.

It may not make you feel any better, but generally, immediately after a crash, the maintenance and aircrews are much more motivated to their jobs perfectly.

It's still statistically safer to fly than to drive.

And believe it or not, I'm safer in a combat zone than here in the states. Statistically speaking. ;>)

I heard this morning that today's crash was the first crash of a commercial airliner in America in over a year.

About 40,000 people died in car accidents last year.

No comparison, really, in terms of safety. Air travel is many times safer.

LB sent me a poem he wrote today called "Snow Bound." If you ask him nicely, perhaps he will post it here for all poetry lovers to appreciate.

Personally, I know that. Deep in my heart I know it. That does NOT reduce the pucker factor when an aircraft goes weight-off-wheels. And I worked on AC for a long time. ;>)

Those are good reminders of rational thought processes.;-)

Actually my concern, even before 9/11, has always been the cranky/out-of-control person on board and what they may do, but maybe that was not a reasonable concern either.

Yet another reason to make sure your children know how to discreetly, politely, and quietly rip the throats out of malcontents that may threaten their lives. ;>)

I'm with you, John. I would not hesitate to throw a good, hard punch at some of the yahoos I've heard about on airplanes. It's usually alcohol-related and they need to know that they cannot be the boss on the airplane.

When I used to fly on United, it was the airline employees who thought they had to be in control. That airline is a freaking joke, in my opinion. Haven't flown them for almost 10 years now.

I don't punch real well, being a small guy. But I can manage if the cabin crew needs help. And I let them know that I will follow any orders they give me. (like a rabid mongoose on acid and speed)

I was the smallest in my class until 9th grade when I finally passed up one girl. I eventually ended up almost 6 feet tall and average (well, above average by age 40 before I discovered Atkins) weight.

But it wasn't until I went to live in China that I ever felt big. There I was one of the tallest people in a city of a few million, believe it or not. And there were a few times when I got involved in scuffles to either stop someone from getting hurt or prevent an injustice. It felt pretty good.

I may have told you about the time I jumped on a thief at the foot of our bed in the middle of the night. He was actually my height, but weighed 30 lbs less and I smacked him on the head with my forearm and wrestled the knife out of his hand.

I remember the story. Your nocturnal guest probably fared better with you than with the local constabulary.

I'm not quite so good a man. He would have been broken when the cops showed up. Maybe it's the red hair. ;>)

It's time for me to call it a night.

I offer special prayers for friends that are missing.

God bless us all. Each, and every one.
