Word For The Day 12/24/02
12/24/02

Posted on 12/24/2002 12:35:35 AM PST by Bella_Bru

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Important teacher's notes:

There will be no school tomorrow. Class will resume on Thursday.

If you want to be on the WFTD Ping List, please let me know. I will be taking names all week and adding them to my new list. I scrapped the old list because of concerns raised on a thread about people be adding to lists without asking to be. Thank you for understanding.

And now for today's word....

jocund \JOCK-und; JOE-kund\, adjective:

Full of or expressing high-spirited merriment; light-hearted; pleasant, cheering, delightful

Etymology: Jocund is from Old French jocond, from Latin jucundus, pleasant, agreeable, delightful, from juvo, juvare, to please, to delight.

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Hey the Teach!!

How's come I'm on page two of da ping-pong list!

Boy .....

Homework: Hollywood (LA actually) is considering promoting Swartzn... for CA gov'r.

With Largent and Kemp, both former football players out of the picture for the moment, we might need an actor in politics, 'cuase we ain't got a pair of jocunds in it anymore.

The demo's, unfortunately given today's emotionally-driven women's vote, have a beat with the NY's crowned queen and a few elected ones.

And the king of sex (er, sax) always hovering in the background.

"i have on a sweater with a santa claus on it!!

Can you image what remarks and holiday greetings and well-wishes for a fruitful (both cherries and melons I'd wager!) New Year she would have gotten if she weren't wearing a sweater while shopping......

It was wonderful! There were definitely some terrific lines in it. I want "Return of the King" NOW! hehehehe

Now I have to figure out where I can buy the soundtrack.

The 11am show didn't have a ton of people there so I got to sit in the back and stretch out over a couple of chairs.

Well... I would have liked it a lot better if I had gotten a preview of Pirates of the Carribean! lol

That line had everyone rolling.

Jackson has managed to break the movies at very good points and leave you just dying for the next installment. And knowing of course that it is DONE and that I wont get to see a preview until at least June.

(sigh)

I want an elf... or two.

oh you poor thing. xshub had to trek to the fedex ofc to get mine, i guess, but at least he got it. i feel certain it is the JRT purse!

It's not so bad. I'll get it, even if not today. Though I plan to go down at 3:45 to retrieve it. The goodwife already told me what it is: It's an electronic practice chanter (for practicing bagpipes quietly!).

NAME THAT TUNE - a related story

Donald MacDonald from the Isle of Skye (or maybe it was Neil McNell from Barra, but anyway..) went to study at an English university and was living in the hall of residence with all the other students there. After he had been there a month, his mother came to visit him (no doubt carrying reinforcements of tatties, salt herring, oatmeal and whisky).

"And how do you find the English students, Donald?" she asked.

"Mother," he replied, "they're such terrible, noisy people. The one on that side keeps banging his head on the wall and won't stop. The one on the other side screams and screams all night."

"Oh Donald! How do you manage to put up with these awful noisy English neighbours?"

"Mother, I do nothing. I just ignore them. I just stay here quietly, playing my bagpipes."

Check this out.

My brother and I went to the midnight showing, and later at eight I got to see it again!. So I've actually already memerised my most of my favorite parts.

best part, without question: Gollum talking to himself.

A close second:

What's is it doing?!! It's ruining it! STUPID FAT HOBBIT!!!"

"What I really need around some taters."

"Taters? What's taters?"

Po-ta-toes. Some nice rabbit stew served with a side of chips. even you couldn't resist that."

"YES, I COULD! Just give me a fish raw and wrrrrrrrriggling! You keep your nasty chips."

"You're hopeless."

Man I love that scene. And here's an interesting tidbit. you know the part where Gimli is sifting thru the burned corpses of the Uruk-hai and they find the elevn dagger and Aragorn kicks that helmat and screams REALLY loud? Well the reason that scream is so convincing is because he broke his toe kicking the helmet. He actually finishing that day of shooting, about seven more takes, before anyone noticed the limp and made him take his boot off.

weird story. the german shephards came by awhile ago to wish xspup a merry christmas. their 'mom' was telling me that yesterday around 4:30, down the street from me, while she was running (which is how she walks her dogs) an older guy walking an airedale brandished a gun at her dogs and said if her dogs came near his dog again, he would shoot them. now these 2 dogs are big, dumb and friendly, wouldn't hurt a flea. they frolic with xspup who is 1/4 their size and roll him around in a friendly way. i have no idea what the guys problem is, but good grief, if he gets a load of xspup he will fire w/o asking questions! her dad is a retired police detective. she went home and filed a report on the guy.

How was it? I'm planning to go see it after the goodwife returns home. (Went to see ST:whatever last week -- a waste of good money, I fear.)

Hiya Jean. Try to keep the spoilers to a minimum ok? ;-) Although I loved that scene too.

Did you know that Aragorn nearly drowned. I forget who was doing the "Middle Earth" bit on television and they were talking about that and how a miscalculation could have ruined the show. Wouldn't have made Aaragorn's day either!

Personally, I liked.... "You're Late" hehehehe
